Apple's AR/VR Headset Nearing Completion as Board Gets Demo

Just as a reminder, 1-5K is not unusual.

These industry AR goggles from microsoft start at 5K:
Consumers are not going to pop 5K for one, but its NOT for consumers.

I don't know what Apple has planned but the price points will tell us the target audience. And as for how they look, well who cares as you wear them inside. With VR its all about head comfort. AR would be different, you would wear them out in the open so mobility and aesthetics do matter.

Curious how that gray fabric (which looks the same as some of the Apple headphones) looks after a week or so of contact with natural skin oils and dirt from normal use.

Eh, looking at a screen has to be more comfortable than wearing a headset. I’m not convinced. I also don’t really need more screen time in my life.

You still have to be in a certain position for that though. You could just lie in bed in any position with a headset. Should be more immersive as well.

Not saying it will be for everyone but still very early days for this tech.

I predict this product will be only slightly more popular than Google Glass was.

I feel like that was a very different product though? I don't think you could use google glass for gaming or watching videos could you? Also the fact that it's Apple will make more popular with influencers of that bat as well I'd expect.

There are already some semi popular AR/VR headsets as well like oculus.

Pricing is definitely off. It's like people forgot that Apple is expensive but Apple isn't that greedy/out of touch with reality.

In January 2010, people were saying iPad was going to be $1,000+ (it debuted at a shocking $500).

If Apple is bringing this to market, I doubt this will be more than $700.

Yeah I do think these estimates seem crazy to me. Apple tends to target mid to high end consumer pricing. Yes, they price at a premium, but they still want to sell a lot of units. Look at iPad (499 at launch), iPod (399 at launch), Apple watch (399 at launch), HomePod (349 at launch) and maybe even the best pricing of any Apple product AirPods (159 at launch).

$3,000 puts it into a different category. It's no longer targeting the mid/high end consumer. This is either professional, enthusiast, or collector price point. I'm almost wondering if this rumored device is the top end device and they have a spec'd down version to reach a more consumer friendly price point.

I suspect this will be very impressive hardware that will be limited by software and also, at least for now, really obvious use cases to justify the price of it.

Expensive, but limited, but cool and likely showing some promise of "something" eventually.

I guess you don't have much imagination as a person then. VR/AR will be the future on so many levels and in most/all industries. Sure, we are far far away from that but the ground work has to start somewhere.

Just for education purposes it will be huge. Imagine your kids being taught about anything and instead of reading/seeing some ****** books the teacher will "take" them to the source. They can see bottom of the ocean, Earth from the space, dinosaurs, inside the human body etc. The potential is huge for this and like it or not, you will not be able to be without it eventually. (unless you are older generation and by the time this is widespread you are - you know where :) )

I'm not too crazy about it either (for now) as there isn't much use (yet) but I do see this as the future.

No thanks. Never saw the appeal for VR other than for sim racing or the Hub.

This is a planned first step. Apple can’t wait around and jump straight to the cool, sunglass sized AR experience that will be eventually popular because the market would leave them behind. Also, they need something developers can start working with besides iPads. While ARKit is very cool, holding up an iPad all the time is not fun. This is pro level/developer/early adopter hardware. Apple knows full well this isn’t going to be a huge seller and they know the price point is right for the target market. When they can reliably make AR glasses in a sleek, less dorky looking package is when wider adoption (and lower pricing) will come, and their ecosystem will already be in place thanks to these early devices.

No way if it's really goggles like the rendering, and no way if it's $3000, but I'll start to listen when it's smaller and cheaper.

If this system lets me map/create multiple virtual screens against a real world environment so I can have a single screen, multiple screens or even immerse myself within a single "spherical screen", then that would likely get me to hand over the $3K (this would be cheaper then filling my room full of real screens). If it is simply for playing video games or watching a dinosaur walk through my living room, I'm not interested.

Seriously hoping apple don’t do anything too conservative like blocking porn VR on this device, as that’s seriously amazing on occulus and will be a big selling point.
