You guys are all hilarious. This is a pretty sweet deal.
I took advantage of it and got my brother-in-law (who is heading to law school) a Retina Macbook this week. He was excited to get the laptop... and crazy excited about the headphones. On his own he would have never purchased a nice pair of headphones like this.
Also... keep in mind that you still get education discounts on top of everything.
Here's how my bill went:
Macbook: $1299 - $50 student discount
Applecare: $249 - $66 student discount
Solo2 Headphones: $199.95 - $199.95 student discount
USB VGA Multiport adapter: $79
Incase Neoprene Sleeve: $39.95
Sub-total: $1550.95
Tax: $85.50
Total: $1636.45
In total we got over $300 in discounts. This purchase would have been near $2000 without Apple's education discounts and the Beats deal.
All-in-all my brother-in-law gets to start law school (which he worked really hard to get into) with a brand new swanky laptop and some sweet headphones for a really good price. Two things he wouldn't have ever been able to afford on his own.
I'm happy, and so is he![]()
You're still getting the student discount on the hardware, the headphones are an added bonus for some.It may be a decent deal if you're in the market for Beats headphones, for all others it's bloatware and a lost opportunity to get a much needed discount on new hardware.
The official fine print states refurb a are excluded. The article is incorrect.Refurbished Macs too? I think this is a first. At least I don't remember refurbs qualifying... only "new" Macs.
You really think those headphones are worth that much? Come on man.
With almost a quarter million views, a lot of people have experienced my opinion regarding the original Beats Solo in this video. I've been quoted in the New York Times, Huffington Post, and numerous places elsewhere expressing my distaste for their products. I now find myself with the unenviable task of reversing my opinion, at least in part, with the introduction of their new Beats by Dre Solo2—a very fine headphone indeed.
There's a two week return period. If you return it and then purchase a new one, you might be able to get the back to school deal...I just ordered my sister a MacBook Air for school last week. Is there a way I can take advantage of this?
It's not either or. It's stating "Save up to $200 on a Mac, AND get a free pair of headphones" or Save $20 on an iPad. It's just coincidental that the headphones cost the same amount as what you could save on a mac. Students can always save up to $200 on a mac throughout the year, just now you also get a free pair of headphones!
$3 worth of something for free is still more than nothing for free.Buy a Mac and get $3 headphones for free? What a bargain!
Just like when people buy something it doesn't cost them anything, they just make a little less income.Funny discussion ...
As I got my MBP for about two weeks, I do not get anything at all ;-(
But to my opinion this action doesn't "cost" Apple anything at all, they just make a little less profit...

I do. The new ones sounds quite nice, and way better than the older Beats that are way too bass heavy for me.
Lot's of reviews of the Solo 2, including data on the sound. One of the prominent ones by InnerFidelity:

Again, for free these are an excellent offer. As the resale would be more than an iTunes gift card if you didn't want them (that's cash you can spend anywhere), and they sound pretty good if you wanted some decent headphones.
I've stated time and time again, I was completely against Beats headphones based on my (limited) experience with the original Solos. Then I saw this review of the Solo2's and gave them a try. Soooo much better. I ended up getting a pair of Wireless Solo2's when they were on Black friday for $150. I am still not sure the Solo2's are worth $200 and $300, but if you can get them for half price ($100 and $150), then I think they are a great (or at least a very good) value.
There is a reason why they are giving away "$200" headphones and it's because those headphones have a 1000% markup. I rather get the apple in-ear headphone that actually sound good, over any beats product. You guys really don't understand that getting the headphones is somewhat of a decent deal, do you?
Yeah, and the "$79" headphones likely have the same markup. There is a reason why they are giving away "$200" headphones and it's because those headphones have a 1000% markup. I rather get the apple in-ear headphone that actually sound good, over any beats product.
