Finally shipped :(

I just received my shipment notification, and even though my order acknowledgement and an Apple rep said I would have my phone by June 24th, the FedEx tracking information says June 28th. At least it wasn't cancelled, still not happy.

Well, I guess they are ignoring my last email. I just can't believe they are cherry picking who gets their order expedited and who doesn't. Why is my claim inferior to the email they received before me?

I guess I will have to wait until July 14th to get the new phone. Do you think stores will have them in stock before the July 14th ship date?

Apple Moving To The Dark Side?

Since the early 80's, I have been a huge fan of Apple. I always felt they tried to do things right... Build user friendly products, sell them in a user friendly way, ship them in user friendly packages, and, when they had issues, service/correct them in a user friendly way.

However, my whole iPhone 4 experience has left me wondering if Apple's success has put the bean counters in charge... and if the culture is changing?

Here is an outline of my experience:
1) It took about 6 hours to finally place an order for 2 phones on the 15th... I mean 6 hours just to place 2 orders... Apple is it really too much to ask for an easier online order experience... The "we were surprised by the demand" excuse is wearing thin... spend some money and upgrade your systems.
2) On June 15th I get all the proper email order acknowledgements with order numbers, etc. and the orders are posted correctly to my online account.
3) On June 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 I try to call to confirm that everything is OK... but keep getting the "call back later" message... (Again... upgrade your systems!) but since everything looks OK on my online account, I assume my orders are in good shape and don't try to get through for hours.
4) On June 21st, I notice that one of my orders is cancelled and try to call and ask what happened... but keep getting the "call back later" message
5) On June 22nd receive a "We were unable to complete the authorization process..." cancellation email at 2 AM.
6) On June 22nd finally get through and reorder the cancelled phone by 10:00 AM and am told that everything on my account is now magically fine and the Apple employee can see no reason why the order was cancelled. I am given the applestoreinfo@apple.com email address to send a request for expedited delivery... which I send immediately outlining the events surrounding the cancellation and request expedited shipping
7) On June 22nd at 2 PM I get the "We are unable to validate that your order is eligible for expedited shipping" email
8) On June 22nd at 3 PM I send an email again outlining the events surrounding the cancellation and ask what more is needed to validate that my order should be eligible for expedited shipping.... so far no response.

It is truly sad to watch Apple moving over to the Dark Side.... It will be a while before I get excited about a new apple product... too bad :( :( :( :( :(

I know.. I just think they are dumping all these expedited email requests now.

I just got a reply to my last email to them, it took them about 30 hours to respond. Basically they say the cancellation was not their fault, they won't expedite shipping and that I am SOL. Fortunately I get to choose who I do business with and Apple are making it easy to turn my back on them.

I bought a bunch of AAPL stock a couple of years ago and have made enough cash from that to more than cover what I have spent on their gadgets, but as somebody posted above, they seem to be turning to the Dark Side and I suspect now would be a good time to sell before they alienate the fan base that got them where they are today.

I have to say the EVO4G and Droid X are looking better and better everyday. Since the Early Termination fee on my contract is only $175, switching would be a bunch cheaper than paying Apple $499 for a iPhone 4.

Both of those phones are as big as toaster ovens

Quite bizarre.

I sent one last email to the "Customer Service" team and cc'd Steve Jobs. Email sent at 7:29 ET, reply from Steve received at 7:36

Didn't offer any hope, but kind of cool in a geeky kind of way.

Sorry. Too many customers wanted their phones on day one. The laws of physics prohibit this, so some will be upset.

That is the surest sign that you are a genuine Apple Fanboy :)

Here was my email -
I am unsure how you are not able to validate my new order fro expedited
shipping. I am extremely displeased with my experience thus far with the
iPhone 4. You canceled my order without even contacting me and now that I
show you proof, you are not honoring your own terms. I see other people are
getting the expedited shipping as per macrumors.com and not me. Here is
further proof of my order times:

As you can see, the order was placed on June 15th @ 4:02 PM and was canceled
(by Apple) on June 19 @ 10:34 AM.

[I placed the two orders here in JPG form]

Here is the new order with the order number.

Please help me out with expedited shipping!

Thank you,

Here was their reply -
Dear Apple Customer,

Thank you for your recent Apple order.

Customers whose orders were cancelled due to an Apple error were notified via email of the issue and asked to rebook their order and then contact Apple at this email address for possible expedited delivery. After reviewing our records, your original order was not cancelled because of this reason.

Your subsequent order is set to ship by the dates that were listed in your order acknowledgement email. We are not providing expedited shipping at this time on your order.

We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Sincerely,

Apple Online Store

I noticed that every time they emailed me, the "thanked me for my order" but then I inferred that I was requested to "bend over".

Regardless, what I got from that email was I made the mistake that caused Apple to cancel my order and not them. It sounds like other people got the same email.

While extremely frustrated, I have done my best to get expedited shipping but that isn't going to happen. I guess I will receive my new phone on or about July 17th.

One point for Apple.

I actually got a tracking number now, looks like it will be here by mid next week. Guess what I did different with my reorder? Nothing. Same line, same debit card, and I didn't even call ATT. So what was the problem with the first one? They really could not have pissed me off much more.
