The 5c actually tried to be more affordable . The 16e is more so replacing the iPhone 14 , not the SE3. Apple is just abandoning affordable.

Tried to be more affordable? The 5C started at $549 for 16GB storage which in today's dollars is around $745. That was only $100 (around $136 in today's dollars) less than the 5S being sold at the time.

By comparison, the 16e is not only trying but is much more affordable at $599. That's $230 less than the 16.

This is an extremely poor choice compared to regular 16 which has "far superior" Qualcomm modem and just better all-round specs. The display is also junk tier slow-motion 60hz. Here in India, the regular 16 is many times offered for same price as 16E with various discounts. For me this is a "product launch pricing" fail !
I've been through the 60 Hz OLED with the Google Pixel 6a, which as almost usable in bright sunlight unless the display brightness is 100%. The 2022 iPhone SE display is much brighter in real life.

The good thing is that my carrier has offered me good deals, getting the 2020 iPhone SE for $0.00 per month after credits and the 2022 for $1.25 per month. This 16e will probably be $3.75 per month.

Assuming you are referring to the SE 2, it was $399 for 64GB and $449 (not $499) for 128GB. Adjusting for inflation from when it launched in 2020, that would be around $491 for 64GB and $553 for 128GB.

Although slightly higher than I expected, I think $599 is still a fair price for an iPhone with the 16e specs.

That would be reasonable if storage prices hadn't rapidly declined in that time.

The Pixel 7A is where it's at. 90Hz display, 1000 nits, 128Gb, half decent USB connectivity.

Compare:

* Pixel 7A - NEW sealed UK spec £239
* iPhone 6E - NEW £599 - £689 without/with applecare

I have a 15 Pro at the moment. I'm not sure why if I'm honest.

I wonder whether my parsimonious employer will continue to buy iPhones now they can’t get the SE at that price.

They will switch to BYOD and set up a policy of iPhone only.

That's what my, as you call it, parsimonious employer did.

I still do not have a company phone despite being on call. They are limited to actually calling or SMSing me. Tee hee.

Now I know why this was a pre-recorded event and not live; would've taken a master sound engineer to silence all the boos and replace them with applause during the price reveal.

It's one reason I'm sure they don't want to go back to truly live keynotes that aren't pre-recorded

They’re parsimonious but exceedingly security conscious so they won’t let us use our own phones.

Has every part got 40% more expensive?

It's not necessarily (just) about parts getting more expensive but rather many features being added or improved including increased RAM, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, emergency SOS via satellite, crash detection, better camera setup, better chip, better modem, better battery, increased max brightness, super retina XDR display, AI, ceramic shield, greater water resistance, larger display, and more.

This wouldn't be bad if the tradition continues where there will be an "e" every year after.

iPhone 17 Pro Max
iPhone 17 Pro

iPhone 17 Air
iPhone 17

iPhone 16 Plus
iPhone 16

iPhone 17e

Or next year they introduce iPhone 16e Mini and starts at $499.

Cheap is the right word

$100 $170 price hike from the SE and no MagSafe on a brand new model in 2025...

A new low for Tim

Also, compared to the SE3, it's heavier, taller, wider and thicker

(edited price hike # - thank you @Electroni )
The bigger problem is for that extra 170 buyers can be beta testers for Apple's modem. With this price and size, it's better deal to stretch out the release cycle, and just buy a normal iphone. For me the new SE, sorry E, has zero selling points.

How is that even legal?

I can see this phone selling well, Apple just needs to start trimming some of the other models. With a new "Slim" model supposedly on the way, that's not just a lot of iPhones to choose from, it's more than enough for consumers to get analysis paralysis.

In the UK it's priced at £599, which is roughly $750, not $600.

I was intending to buy one at release, but not when I'm paying an extra $150 for it.
In UK we pay VAT at 20% which is almost all of the change from $600 to $750.

I swore that I wouldn't buy another Google product and then, the 6a was US$299 - 10% discount and I should have waited anyway.

Even if Google gave me a Pixel 9a and free service, I wouldn't accept it.

If I got a OnePlus 12R at a good discount, I'd go for that. I don't like the other Android phone brands.
