It’s much easier to blame overpriced iPhones and pretend that you have been right all along.
I've seen the difference a leader can make, even with all of the same talent below. It can be massive. If anyone has worked in large orgs for any great length of time can attest.
That's not to say someone else who steps in doesn't carry the torch, but the possibility of it going poorly is definitely there when you lose a great leader. Most times there's a negative effect in at least some kind of way all the way down to a crippling effect. History also bears this out.
Occasionally it can even get better as someone with even more vision and talent takes the reigns. But it's a gamble. But Apple is loaded with talent so who knows.
