Confused. They say there is now free and paid versions of the iWork apps but it sounds like the free versions will no longer be updated? Sounds like they’re now only paid apps through this studio thing.. I only see the 14.5 versions in app store

As someone who works a lot on games (I'm a one man team) and has to make promotional material (Pixelmator Pro), and edit trailers (Final Cut Pro), this is a fair deal. This is probably because I'm quite new to the Mac, and I haven't bought any standalone apps, but I'm not spending the 4000 NOK for standalone Final Cut Pro (even then it is probably not getting some of the features in Creator Studio) if I can just subscribe to Creator Studio and get the add on apps plus Pixelmator Pro

It's just my preference 🤷‍♀️
There are far more people new to the Mac than have been using the Mac since the 128K. Some people forget that. :)

Unpopular opinion maybe, but sometimes subscriptions can be good, especially for a bunch of applications at a reasonable price compared to Adobe's offerings.

Subscriptions generate a steady stream of revenue, enabling companies to hire people and develop new features. I was going to buy Logic Pro last week, but I noticed this new service being released soon and decided to wait.

I'm willing to pay a reasonable price if it includes new features. Also, if this doesn't receive regular updates with new and worthwhile features, I'll simply cancel.

You can easily get Apple Creator Studio by signing up for your local community college and creating an email account with them. Then, Apple sends a verification code to your student email ID, which is easily accessible through your college’s email provider.

And just like that you are paying only $29.99 per year + 1 free month.

The only reason the price is lower than other alternatives, is because they just launched. But the price of subscriptions always ends up rising…

This article contains some inaccuracies. Apple has clearly stated, and the updates proved that all the additional functionality added to Final Cut remains in the app that was purchased. The only apps that get premium extra functionality with a subscription are Iwork apps. All of the new functionality in this update for FCP/Motion/Compressor/logic etc - all but work is available to both subscribers and perpetual license owners.
I don’t think that’s quite right because those apps on Mac also have 2 versions but unlike iWork the new versions (the ones with Liquid Glass) won’t let you in without a subscription.

This all feels like EN-SHI-TTI-FI-CATION in its purest form. Exactly why Doctorow coin the term in the first place.

The dreaded moment has arrived. Apple is moving features into subscriptions. Yuck yuck yuck.

Seriously. Apple has truly gone down the toilet, epically in the last few years. If it wasn’t for the M chips, Apple would be basically heading towards discount store branding. Horrid software, stale hardware (which takes forever to release now because Apple is out of new ideas so they drag out releases), and now subscription based applications. Going back to my Linux setup is looking better and better by the day. And it’s FREE.

How many times will people fall for this trap? It has happened so many times, one would think everyone knows what will happen.

You get in the system, you depend on it, they raise the price ridiculously, you spend 50x what you would have before.

Really how do you still fall for this?

This is the issue. The price is reasonable out of the gate, I suppose, but it's the principle of Apple going freemium and what this means for the ecosystem. Premium devices for which you pay an "Apple tax" at least had good core software, but increasingly Apple knows that services is a huge profit centre and it will hammer that for all it's worth. At some point, the balance will shift and what may seem good value today will appear a trap tomorrow. The differentiator today seems AI features and premium content that most people don't need or desire. Tomorrow, it may be other features that increasingly push people into a genuine dilemma. The Apple greed is really starting to rankle with me.

I updated pages and numbers to the new versions, but they haven't been updated for Liquid Glass and macOS 26? that's a bit odd...
on macOS for some odd reason, you have to uninstall the old versions of Pages, Numbers & Keynote and download the new versions. When you open one of those apps after updating to 14.5, it pops up a message telling you the app is no longer updated and to install the new versions.

...make sure you save all your stems and MIDI files because, by then, you'll have created a bunch of Logic project files that you won't be able to open once you drop your Logic subscription, and "invested" a lot of time learning how to use Logic (DAWs and pro video editors have a heck of a learning curve and the UIs between different products diverge more than between different, say, WP or spreadsheet apps).

What's next?
Paying to update your OS?
That was the case with Mac OS upgrades until after Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. With the versions up to after 10.6 Snow Leopard, you'd pay $130 for the install disc of the new version that came out every two years. Then 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion were inexpensive upgrades via the Mac App Store (Lion was $30, Mountain Lion was $20) before the decision to make them free upgrades with 10.9 Mavericks.

Today I upgraded the iWork apps (as I still refer to Pages, Numbers and Keynote), Final Cut Pro and Motion and Compressor and Logic Pro to the new versions released to tie into the Creator Studio bundle, but because I purchased them with permanent licenses (though with the iWork apps they came free with my M1 MacBook Air), they still have the old icons, meaning they aren't the Creator Studio "subscription" versions. It's a fascinating tidbit to point out...
Even iMovie got an update, with this banner on top of my projects library:

Apple today launched the new Creator Studio that was initially unveiled two weeks ago, providing content creators with access to six Apple apps for $12.99 per month or $129 per year.

Creator Studio includes Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Pixelmator Pro on Mac and iPad, along with Motion, Compressor, and MainStage on the Mac. Final Cut Pro is Apple's video editing software, Logic Pro is for audio editing and creation, and Pixelmator Pro is an image editing app that Apple purchased in 2024.

Apple is still rolling out the full bundle, but links for the individual Creator Studio versions of the apps are now live and you can subscribe to Creator Studio from within them.

All of the apps with the exception of Pixelmator Pro for iPad were available prior to today, and they continue to be available for individual, standalone purchase. The Creator Studio bundle unlocks AI features that are not otherwise accessible in these apps, plus it adds new features to free apps like Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, with Freeform coming later. Creator Studio versions of those apps include:

Accessing the full functionality of Apple's video editing, photo editing, audio editing, and iWork apps will require a Creator Studio subscription going forward, though Apple will continue to offer updates for the standalone versions of the apps. Some of the tools exclusive to Creator Studio:
  • Final Cut Pro - Transcript search that uses AI to search for the soundbite you're looking for, visual search for finding specific parts of a video, and beat detection improvements that make it easier to match a video to the rhythm of the music. There are also new dynamic titles, transitions, and graphic elements to improve visuals.
  • Logic Pro - There's an option to add a Session Player to a song that plays synth keyboard and synth bass parts in a variety of styles. AI can be used to analyze any audio or MIDI region to extract harmonic and chord information. Logic Pro's iPad sound packs and producer packs are also now available on Mac. Users have access to royalty-free loops, samples, and instruments.
  • Pixelmator Pro - The Creator Studio version of Pixelmator Pro features a Liquid Glass design, a new warp tool for reshaping layers, and warp-powered mockups for apparel and products. Pixelmator Pro for iPad is also entirely new.
  • iWork - Includes a new content hub with Apple-curated royalty-free photos, premium templates, and themes. There are also options to generate and remix image creations right in documents, with a Super Resolution tool for upscaling images. In Keynote, you can generate slides and presenter notes using AI, while Magic Fill in Numbers runs a pattern analysis model across your data and suggests table contents for missing data.
There is no way to subscribe to just a single Creator Studio app at a lower price, as Apple only offers an all-in-one subscription.

Creator Studio can be downloaded from the iOS and Mac App Stores starting today. All new subscribers are eligible for a one-month free trial, and customers who purchase a new Mac or qualifying iPad model with an A16, A17 Pro, or M-series chip can get an extended three-month free trial.

The Creator Studio membership can be shared with up to five family members on a linked Apple Account. Students and educators are able to subscribe to Creator Studio for $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

Creator Studio's full functionality is available with iOS 26 and later, iPadOS 26 and later, and macOS 26 and later. Most of the apps require macOS 15.6 at a minimum and an M1 chip or newer for Mac use, though Pixelmator Pro requires a Mac with macOS 26.

As for the iPad, Final Cut Pro requires an A16 chip or later, Logic Pro requires an A12 Bionic Chip or later, and Pixelmator Pro requires an A16 chip or later.

Had to use the links provided in the article to download the apps. Searching 'Apple Creator Studio' on the App Store, no go. Geez, Apple, this isn't a good start.
Pixelmator Pro is only available on Tahoe.

I don't really need the Pro apps like Final Cut, etc., but since the educational faculty price for it all is so good ($29.99 annually), I bought the bundle - mostly for Pixelmator Pro.

Serious question, does anyone use pages/numbers in a professional environment? I genuinely am curious. It's been a long time since I tried pages, but the compatibility issues with certain formats made it a hard no.

I feel good because the old one that I own is Editor's Choice :D

I own Pixelmator Pro too on Mac, but I’m not so happy as you! We can’t use the Pixelmator Pro iPad version without getting a subscription to “Creative Studio.” So, in reality, we “half own it” and that sucks! I was expecting consistency and fairness from Apple! They also messed up with iWork. Not everybody needs to be “Pro.” Not everybody wants to be “Pro.” Some people are okay with iWork without jumping into AI. In fact, plenty people didn’t even turn on the AI features in the newest iPhone and iPad mini. I don’t think Apple realize the mistakes they’re making. We’ll see how this works out.

So I'm half way through a Final Cut iPad Sub. If I switch to this does my old sub get refunded or pro-rata'd in any way? I can't find any info about that.
