Not great news, this. Instead of design reporting to someone with tons of other responsibilities, get someone in who can dedicate 100% of their time and effort to pushing the design boundaries and innovation again. It's doubtful that Jony would ever come back, but get someone in to fill that gap.

I hope not. The Touch Bar Mac is the last MacBook he worked on.
The team was Jobs, Forestall and Ive. They were great. The problem is Forestall was a threat to Crook so Crook got rid of him by setting him up. Forestall was meant to get the CEO job in three to five years when he was ready as he was a product design person. He got blamed for the maps fiasco, but Apple has shown they won’t give the resources needed to finish any project Tim doesn’t want done and he’s not a product person. So we got Vision Pro which is not ready for a mass market as it’s clunky. Oh Apple Car. Services is what Tim is good at peddling and ripping off developers. He spent $10B on Apple Car when he should have spent it on Siri and AI. Apple has ruined the brand Apple Intelligence. He’s a bad CEO, and I would love the board to say well it may not be the best for the short term stock price but innovation and goodwill need to come back to Apple let’s put Forestall in the role.

Tim is great at getting maximum value now, but has he truly set Apple up for a great future? Or just locked people into an ecosystem while destroying goodwill? I think another ten years with Tim in charge would ensure Apple gets bypassed by a new AI product. Something that works without a massive ecosystem that locks everyone in. It wouldn’t be so bad if there was free competition. Apple under Crook is so anticompetitive. Sickening.

nooooo, can they not find anyone new who's competent and therefore are just losing people and retreating further and further back? Who comes after Tim Cook?

I think hardware design leaks so close to the release usually end up being right unfortunately. I agree that it’s not sleek
But we’ve had rumors with mockups like this for quite a while. Even if the actual product is similar to this I think it will look better (at least the two-toned part).

Exactly. Someone said it. The fact that all the failures of the Mac Pro from 2013 and other Macs are put on him (Jony) alone, is plain insanity
People really forget the fact that Apple is really a collaborative company with engineers, designers, marketing etc.
And what are they saying about the rest of the executive team if they think one person could to make such a decision with no pushback?

I’d say the same about the TouchBar and butterfly keyboard. I highly doubt the industrial design team alone made the decision to produce a sleek Mac laptop with no fan and one port. At the launch event Tim Cook called it the reinvention of the notebook and Phil Schiller gushed about the keyboard.

How much money do you want to wager that the 17 Pro will NOT look like this?
It's already in production. The design is final. They'd have to scrap months of production to change it now.

No, this garbage design is happening. No amount of money I could bet would come close to what Apple's already bet on it.

Our best hope to get rid of this bad design is to hope that this is the iPhone that flops.

But I bet Ive could make the iPhone Air even thinner!!!
It's so sad. Ive used to be a good designer. The original iMacs, the original iBooks, the PowerBook G3, the G3 tower - all great. It started going downhill with the TiBook, utterly uninspired design, horrible materials choice, and that sort of aesthetic took over and destroyed his brain.

There was nothing wrong with the design or idea of the Touch Bar, wider implementation was the issue
No. Everything was wrong with it.

Putting a screen on the keyboard was stupid. It's inherently a dumb idea. Keyboards are about muscle memory, moving things around all the time was just dumb, lack of tactile experience on a keyboard was just dumb.

And with the horrible implementation, it got worse. I've seen so many strobing touchbars, utterly useless because they no longer show anything, and really distracting because a big strobing light right in front of the screen isn't conducive to usefulness. And because of Ive's awful industrial design, replacing a bad one is a full disassembly, it's an expensive repair for a cheap part replacement because it's so much of a PITA to get to.

I would go as far as to say that it's not only the AI product that Apple would be bypassed by. Tim has stagnated the development of Apple's products because he has figured out the way the slower you make the changes, the more cash you can milk from an already closed-off ecosystem. What he doesn't seem to realise is the product is aging and is not going along with times, except their Mac lineup that is truly great. Perhaps that's because computers don't exist in such extreme fast-paced environments as other electronics do? No idea, but it seems to me the only product line he has not screwed up now is the Mac.

I wonder, would the Touch Bar have been good if it was in addition to but not a replacement of the Function Keys?
Yes. I have no issue with the idea of a Touch Bar. But there are certain functions you should be able to do without looking at the keyboard, like adjusting the volume and brightness. And of course media playback buttons.

I don't think having Tim Cook reviewing hardware and software designs is a good idea and it's a little too late the iPhone 17 is already in production it'll be the ugliest iPhone ever made

Exactly. This decision screams “Bad Management” to me.
One person even CEO can’t be good at everything. What does he actually know about design? He is a great manager, I guess. But he doesn’t have a vision

It is without a doubt, Tim Cook has no design experience, or the personality to be a designer. I suspect what we are seeing is the possibility that Cook and others in Apple have recognised the seriously poor decisions of the past design teams.

Cook taking over the Design team tells me Apple is not going to promote from within, but is going outside of Apple to find a new manager for this position. A personality that will do a reset on the minds and capabilities of the present design team members.
