Sounds like damage control from Apple

Hardly. I think it's admirable that an executive from Apple Took The time to respond to a customers question regarding Face ID and the iPhone X. Federighi could have simply ignored that email, but he didn't, he chose to respond and explain some of the capabilities. That's not damage control at all. That's called mutual respect.

The bottom line is TouchID wasn't broken, and they chose to replace it with something that is not is good in way more scenarios than the ones where it is better.

Everyone said this when TouchID came out. Swipe to unlock was not broken but they added something else that was also slow and didn't work to its greatest capacity but it got better and now everyone loves it. I guarantee the same exact scenario plays out here.

I still don't see any real benefit over Touch ID.

They've replaced it with something that's more convenient in some and less convenient in other ways, works slower and has more potential of someone else unlocking it against your will.

Not saying Face ID sucks, but shouldn't the new thing be significantly better and not just different and for many people even worse?

Well the hardware for FaceID can be used for other things too, not just unlock your device.
But touchID has only one purpose.

It doesn't matter what Apple say some people will still find a way to complain about an Apple product, what people are forgetting here is that the technology inside Face ID is just brilliant and futuristic, while other companies such as Samsung have Facial recognition it is no where near as advanced or as secure as Face ID. I get that it's a new thing and people are worried about Touch ID but at the same time people expect Apple to be innovating but they can't do that without moving forward and that sometimes means leaving other technology behind.

Well, call it mutual respect if you want. :)
But it is actually just good damage control in the form of good PR.

Apple has a history responding to their customers. That's not the first time an executive has responded directly to a customer in the form of an email. Tim Cook has responded to many emails to customers questions or inquiries. Nonetheless, it is a matter of respect, even if you want to view it as public relations. Because we the customers are the ones that are supporting their products. If Somebody has a question or concern, A matter of respect to respond if applicable.

But everyone on here told me Apple didn't even bother thinking about sunglasses when developing FaceID?

So then it can easily be used while sleeping. It can easily be used by cops.

How often have the cops asked you for your passcode in the past that this is going to be a HUGE issue for you.

If that's a legitimate fear for you then you need to disable Face ID and use just the passcode. In the US courts can legally force you to use your finger to unlock your phone but cannot force you to provide your passcode. This is no different.

I've personally been robbed at knife point two times, successfully, that is. The thieves got away with my phone and wallet. Both of those guys at least were so on edge during the whole shebang that I would think pointing the phone at my face or trying to wrestle one of my fingers for a chance at opening the phone were quite literally the last thing on their minds.

So that scenario really doesn't worry my in the least.

Holy hell. Many sympathies but maybe consider some alternate life choices. I realize you probably can't carry a firearm like in America but maybe a different neighborhood would help?

Certainly don't blame you for handing the phone over. No material item is worth your life.

A lot of people on MR worried about cops. Why? The last time I had an interaction with law enforcement was 5 years ago when I was pulled over for speeding.

This is exactly what I need.
A reason to throw all my technology in the trash and go back to a simpler way of living.

Damage control for what? Outside of sites like this I don’t see anyone talking about it.

I'd say it lowers the barriers considerably, since they don't even need to touch you to unlock your phone with Face ID.
