Hardly. I think it's admirable that an executive from Apple Took The time to respond to a customers question regarding Face ID and the iPhone X. Federighi could have simply ignored that email, but he didn't, he chose to respond and explain some of the capabilities. That's not damage control at all. That's called mutual respect.

It's damage control. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

You must’ve never got out of the pool or had messy hands and had to use your wet hands on touch ID

if your fingers are messy, chances are you can't use the phone anyway. so unlocking the phone using FaceID and then can't use it since your fingers are messy.

So it begins. As more info comes out FaceID is sounding better and better and people dismissing it now will be the same people who a year or two from now swear by it and make threads stating how much they love it over TouchID now. TouchID was controversial when it first came out and people came out of the woodwork to dismiss it left and right. Now we wouldn't even consider a phone without a fingerprint reader. The same will happen with FaceID.

No it cannot. You need to have your eyes opened.

No, it require eye contact. Unless you sleep with your eyes open, it’s not a problem.

It's a convenience. If you hold National Security secrets on your telephone, don't use faceid or touchid. Use a complex password only. Also, don't put servers in mom 'n pop stores either. That's not a good idea.

Seriously, I laugh when people throw out dramatic scenarios about the legitimacy of this. IF A COP POINTS IT AT ME AN RUNS AWAYY, WHAT DO YOU DO THEN HUH? GOTCHYA!!1

I mean, use a complex password if you are planning an attack or something. Otherwise if you want your cat/dick pics to stay safe, you are good with touch/face id.

It won't work while sleeping as FaceID is attention-aware, i.e. you've got to be looking at the device to unlock it with FaceID

On a side note, it's bothering me that Craig signed his email off as "- craig" without capitalizing his name.

Except you have to look at it. Do you sleep with your eyed open? It can be quickly disabled before a cop has your phone.

Do you sleep with your eyes open?

Unless you sleep with your eyes open, no it can't be used when sleeping. With regards to cops they would have to force your eyes open and force you to look at it. You really worried about that situation?

How often have the cops asked you for your passcode in the past that this is going to be a HUGE issue for you.

If that's a legitimate fear for you then you need to disable Face ID and use just the passcode. In the US courts can legally force you to use your finger to unlock your phone but cannot force you to provide your passcode. This is no different.

I guess you are unique and sleep with your eyes open. LOL. And, yes, the ubiquitious problem of police officers sneaking into your room is on everyone's mind. You are lucky that those cops who have been sneaking into your room never thought of holding Touch ID to your fingers.

I will apologize. I saw sunglasses and committed an internet sin. I formed an opinion based on a single sentence without reading the rest.

A lot of people on MR worried about cops. Why? The last time I had an interaction with law enforcement was 5 years ago when I was pulled over for speeding.
I have seen them stopping and questioning moms like me at the local shopping center. I got stopped and questioned a lot in parks and open public areas in the suburbs. It's a creepy enough nuisance that I stick around my house now that I'm out in the country with more wide open spaces that belong to me and my neighbors that we share.

I guess it depends where you live and what's going on in the community. The drug trade flourishes around our state and we have some gang problems so I guess that's part of it. I'll never know for sure until they explain it all, if ever.

There is nothing on my iPhone but texts with friends and family and pictures of friends and family, but I still wouldn't want any stranger, even a policeman, going through all of the contents of my phone without my being guilty of a serious crime. I don't even litter or jaywalk. That doesn't prevent innocent people minding their own business from being accosted by police. Sometimes it's just mistaken identity.

Not even that, but you can:
  • Remotely disable it by using Find my iPhone on the web or another device
  • Quickly tap the lock button five times, which also disables biometrics for police who, in the US, can't compel you to give them your passcode because it's against the law.
Apple goes to these ridiculous lengths to ensure privacy and security, and people still complain. What's pathetic is that many of these users happily give over all of their personal information to Google every day.

So many people worried about cops makes me wonder the kind of people on this forum. :p.

Why are so many people concerned about handing their phone to a cop? Wtf are some of you up to?

Please spread the word, this is another internet myth/fake news anyways. A police officer can't search your phone without your permission, unless they have a search warrant, or in certain very limited exigent circumcstances. It doesn't matter if it is unlocked or if they know your passcode, etc. Under the 4th Amendment you have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the contents of your smart phone; thus the "warrant requirement" applies and a cop would need probable cause that you had committed a crime to get a search warrant to go through the contents of your phone in most all circumstances.

OMG... so many critics and complainers.

Meanwhile, I'm personally excited with this product for a multitude of reasons. I'm definitely getting it. Hopefully I don't have a long wait and my pre-order can be delivered on Nov 3 or very soon thereafter.

Here are the highlights for me:
-Gorgeous design and craftsmanship based on the videos and photos. I'm sure it'll look even much better in person.
-No bezels, except the top notch which does not bother me (I know I'm in the minority on this one).
-I can now easily unlock my phone through Face ID even if I have sweaty fingers or when swimming in the pool or beach.
-A 5.8'' screen which is bigger than the 5.5'' screen of the iPhone 6/7/8 Plus with a footprint that is only marginally larger than that of the current 4.7'' iPhone.
-OLED screen!

I am in the same boat. I really don't understand all the people on the internet complaining and moaning about how this phone isn't a big enough of an upgrade or not innovative enough. I mean its the biggest redesign since going from the 3GS to the 4. How could you not be excited about this new design? I think it looks great and it is the iPhone design I have been waiting for for years. I am sure there will be some software bugs here and there regarding the notch and landscape mode but Apple will more than likely settle it.

Better yet, someone now can take your finger while you're asleep and unlock your phone with it.

Or open your wallet, or go through your pants pockets, or file cabinets, read your diary, peruse your photo albums, etc. What are we going to do??? How have we survived these many centuries???? Is the species doomed???

I think most people are missing what all Face ID could be used for. You use Touch ID to get into your bank app... once. What if the bank app updated app checks for your face every 30 seconds? Never having to worry about touching the home button when you open a protected app. Maybe a setting that closes Safari private tabs if it doesn't recognize the face. Lots of security potential.

I still don't see any real benefit over Touch ID.

They've replaced it with something that's more convenient in some and less convenient in other ways, works slower and has more potential of someone else unlocking it against your will.

Not saying Face ID sucks, but shouldn't the new thing be significantly better and not just different and for many people even worse?
I believe Apple would claim that it is significantly better because, according to Apple's keynote, it is more secure than finger prints and it allows Apple to get rid of the chin of the phone and use it for more useable screen space.

Well I live in the burbs. I wasn’t aware ordinary people are frequently interacting with cops where the cops would be asking for their phones.

They wanted both, but the tech didn't work (presently), so they compromised. Probably the only decent choice for them; a no-brainer,

Trade offs.

Would putting the touch id in the back be less of a trade off than this facegate? I actually don't mind the new tech but I feel that you necessarily don't have to take two steps back to take a step forward. I know people would have moaned about touch id in the back anyway but still a better compromise.

Apple can't address every single feature or capability the iPhone has in two hours. Those keynotes are completely condensed to address the major critiques with the new iPhone. If they addressed all the fine points, that Keynote would be much longer than two hours. Not To mention, The keynote is addressing other new hardware and software as well, combined with the iPhone.

Craig could address animojis and his favorite turd emoji but not an important security feature?

Q: "What will prevent a thief from taking my phone, pointing it at my face, and running?"

A: "There are two mitigations: if you don't stare at your phone, it won't unlock. Also, if you grip the buttons on both sides of the phone when you hand it over, it will temporarily disable FaceID."

I didn't really find solace in Craig's answer to be honest. "Don't stare at it" isn't good enough, as that places responsibility on the victim to be conscious of their actions while a theft or confiscation is taking place. Most will try to get their phone back- likely, while looking at their phone in the other person's hands.

His second answer- using the buttons- also isn't good enough as it's a preventative action, but who knows when a theft or confiscation is going to occur? Once again placing responsibility back on the victim.

PS: I like FaceID, but Apple really needs to go back and think this one through. Maybe by using a TouchID built into the power button for future models.

I am a welder. If it doesn’t work when I have my welding mask on I am out.
I am an astronaut. If it doesn't work when I have my space suit on I am out.

CrappleLOL

But seriously though. Let's be honest, people use their phones while driving. They just do, don't pretend otherwise.

FaceID is going to be incredibly dangerous in this respect. My Lumia 950XL...it's no good if you want to unlock to check something behind the wheel.

Again, please don't pretend everyone are saints and never ever touch their phone while driving. You do. They do. People do. They shouldn't, but they do. Apple needs "trusted devices" like Android...if you are paired to your car's Bluetooth, the device remains unlocked while connected.

FaceID + driving = yikes. Ya'll will see.
