I think the Mac mini PVR thing idea has legs and may well be one of the new products. That said... does anyone seriously believe it'll be programmed through iCal, as suggested? That would represent some serious overloading of the iCal application. It'd be like building iTunes into Mail.app ("Well, they both transfer stuff over a network")

New and fun? By Steve's language these include things like photobooth, frontrow and pokémon. However, none of those are new. I don't think we will be seeing a mac mini, an ibook, a macbook or any new computer, just some accessories for things, but.. They won't be lame, apple aren't lame.

Can't wait!

I hope the article is right about the Mac Mini w/ Front Row. I'm planning on purchasing one real soon to make it my Apple Media Center!:D

An Intel Mac Mini with Front Row sounds pretty good, but if do they release a new Mac Mini chances are they will also release a new Intel iBook (MacBook?).

If they release an Intel Mac Mini with Front Row and with a PVR funtion, I know what I'll be spending my money on :D

Key Is To Sell Macs For Next Mac Every 6-12 Months

However I must disagree with you regarding to the professionals buying PowerPc computers right now... I don't see that happening, because, IT WON'T MAKE SENSE to companies invest money on equipment that will be reemplaced in a short period of time.. I have been holding myself to buy a Powermac DualCore 2.0 G5 because of all of this transition stuff..

Again apple in the other side NEED TO SELL COMPUTERS.. Yo can see the latest interview to Woz and he make clear that apple still a computer company and SHOULD NO LIVE from the Ipod halo effect.

THIS IS A QUOTE FROM MACWORLD AND REMEMBER TODAY "WALLSTREET RULE THE BUSSINESS"

I’ve got a PowerPC-based Mac that I might be looking to upgrade in the next six months or so. Most of the apps that I use every day— BBEdit, Safari, OmniOutliner, and the like—have already added Universal compatibility. But Photoshop has not, and I use that program just enough to where I don’t want to take a performance hit if I upgrade to a machine that’s supposed to be an improvement over what I have. I’ll wager that people who use Photoshop a whole lot more than I do probably feel the same.

Sure, Apple eventually gets my money once I buy that new Intel system after the Universal version of Photoshop ships. But when it comes to taking in revenue, the Wall Street boys tend to favor “sooner” rather than “later,” if you follow my drift.

"Now I want to acknowledge a caveat or two that could make all this hand-wringing seem as quaint as a pronouncement from the 1950s that rock ’n roll music will doubtlessly turn the nation’s youth into soulless communists. We’re talking about how Photoshop performs on a Core Duo chip when it’s entirely possible that a completely different Intel processor will find its way into whatever Apple has in store for the Power Mac’s successor. And that chip, in turn, could put more of a premium on performance, making the gap between a native application and one running via Rosetta less noticeable. Also, note that we’re talking about when Adobe is coming out with Universal versions of its software, which is a lot more re-assuring than the if side of the discussion. So long as we can expect Universal versions of major applications in a timely manner, this Intel transition should go just fine."

COMPUTERS:

IMAC G4 FLAT PANEL 800 MHZ / 768 MB RAM
ALUMINIUM POWERBOOK G4 1 GHZ / 768 MB RAM
IPOD MINI 4 GB FIRST GEN.
BLACK 5TH GEN. IPOD VIDEO
APPLE ALUMINIUM CINEMA DYSPLAY 20" BRAND NEW

PROBABLY A NEW POWERFULL POWERMAC MACHINE ????????
No. Rolling over Macs in less than a year each is not unusual in the pro environment. I am on my 4th PowerMac in 2 years. The key to keeping up is to sell each top of the line early and buy the next top of the line early in each cycle. This is the least expensive way to remain state-of-the-art.

But you're a newbie, so I'll cut you some slack. Been owner of multiple Macs since early 1984.

Final predictions...

Just to voice my final list:

1 - Intel Mac Mini with PVR capability;

2 - iPod Boombox Michael Jackson Edition;

3 - Added media content in iTunes;

4 - iPod Video.

NOTHING ELSE..!

To make a viable PVR there are just too many connections it'll need to receive the video signal - I'd like two HDMI connectors one for video in and one for video out, but others will prefer component, s-video and scart. We just won't get all of these options, and Apple isn't about to make a region specific model, its just not worth the costs. Even if some connectrs are removed, its going to be a bigger model for sure... looking forward to Tuesday!

I am hoping for the Mini as I was about to go get one. I was getting tired of waiting for an Intel version but the wait may be almost over.

Keeping fingers crossed.

wat bout apple using the viiv chip wasnt that the orignal rumors for the mac minis???

No, that wasn't the reason. Viiv needs Windows Media Edition, as it is my understanding it is using a version of Windows Media DRM.

It all depends what else Steve has up his sleeve. If there's room, yeah, he might announce it, but I think Steve is going to have bigger and better things to announce
I agree with you that there will be more. Here's my major reason. No one realizes that Apple did something in the iPod line they never had done before without a bigger announcement, at least not lately. It may have been in an increased capacity for the 3G ipod, but even then Apple did those via press invites and events. A few weeks ago, Apple introduced a new iPod. The 1GB iPod nano. And they just did with a press release. Didn't wait for an event or anything. They easily could have waited till this event, but they didn't. Only because there are too many product in the pipeline, and only the big ones will be announced. So, no Mighty Mouse bluetooth. It will just be done as as a press release as the product exists but handled as an upgrade.

Here's another thought. We know the Mac mini was Apple little steps in the world of media center. We know Front Row has everything to do with 'media everywhere'. The Mac mini does not have a keyboard and mouse with it. Yes, they marketed smart, BYOKM, but was that the real reason. Wasn't it all along the plan to have the Mac mini be used thru a 'remote'. There's another Apple patent that starts to make sense.

But we all know, Steve doesn't like buttons. He may like to push them, but he hates them on 'his' products. So, we need something that is morphing from something into something else. And they only way to do that, is via a touchscreen concept. Hey, another patent that showed up lately.

And we still have this iPhone/MVNO rumors around. I am not sure what to think of that and how to integrate that. But based on patents, my expectations is an new iPod line with touchscreen wheel and fullscreen video, that can be morphed into a FrontRow remote for the Mac mini. Mac mini will not have DVR functionality, but can schedule movie and TV series downloads from iTMS that can be done during a timeframe you're not home or a sleep or someting like that. Major reason that it will lack DVR functionality are the networks. NBC is in a conflict with Tivo for the TivoToGo service, so I am sure that SJ doesn't see it in the interest of Apple and the partnerships they need for iTMS to allow this (at this time).

Will it have iChat functionality with MVNO/Phone integration, I am not sure. Maybe too many faces at once for one device, but who knows.

Just my prediction and the famous two cents.

agree

That's the only way they could diversify it from the vast number of other iPod 'boomboxes'

I own a Squeezebox which has a nifty flourescent display that is easy to read. Apple will need to include something similiar as the iPod 2.5" screen is too small to be read from across the room.

So basically an airport express with display, power amp and speakers. I guess you need the ipod dock as well.

i posted this before. i think this 'boombox' is apple doing the 'squeezebox / soundbridge'. both products are great and very apple-like in the 'it just works...' school of engineering and design. both campanies are very small and will forver remain niche - apple can come in and blow them away overnight, due to thier iPod / iTunes marketshare. sad for those existing companies but good for the masses.

It depends on your definition of "pro." It may be that you're work lets you replace older machines as new ones become available. However, I work in a university setting where computers are paid for by grants and budgets are tight, and we don't have the luxury of getting new Macs as often as you seem to.

And, let me assure you that what I do on my Macs, including a lot of Photoshop and other image processing, is every bit as critical to my job as your computer work is to yours.

Finally, in case you're wondering, I've been using Macs as long as you have, so I'll cut you some slack. :)

Here's a thought, why wouldn't Apple release a version of Front Row for Windows so that the new airport express av and/or touch screen iPod could sell more units? Apple wouldn't need iPhoto for windows or anything else ported because they have already found a way to allow Windows users to sync photos on their iPods. So Apple is basically (likely) going to release a few products that work together and can work alone as well. It will give you the option to upgrade your setup if you like it. So for example, you start out with the entry level setup: Windows PC w/ airport express av streaming to your TV/Stereo. Then you like your setup enough to take the next step: Windows PC w/ airport express av and iPod touch-screen. You really like how you can browse your iPod and play the content by streaming it to your TV. So then you go for the ultimate: Mac Media Mini (DVR, 250 GB HD, etc.) w/ airport express av and iPod with touch-screen.

Just a thought.

If you work in an orthopedic unit, it would be no problem to use a tablet . As for the wi-fi, I am not so sure as that may interfere with some equipment. You are right about washing hands, and we all do, but are you telling me that you would visit a patient, enter the data, and then wash your hands before the next patient, enter a second room, touch the screen to bring up the new data, and then visit the other patient? What good would that do? Sure, no worse then using pens…In fact, have you seen the rates of hospital (I belive you call it "community") acquired infections lately or have I been dreaming at IDSA?

As for MSRA, I edited the sentence and forgot to take the resistant out but english is not my native tongue. Nurses and MDs are spot checked and we have to report all cases of acquired infections to the gov.

Hospital acquired infections are called just that, we use the term community for those infections picked up outside hospital. Most units in the Uk will have more than one doctor on a round so having one act as scribe and another examining the patient - although if you are so worried about bugs then an ortho ward would be the last place you want things, what with all the artificial joints and fresh wounds.

In the UK hospital staff are not routinely swabbed for MRSA because then the trust runs the risk of having to put us on sick leave whilst we await 'clean' status and then who'd look after the patients? MRSA rates are stringently monitored here too but public education is poor and people fail to realise the difference/significance of a positive skin swab vs actual wound infection. In fact i've even seen soaps available for purchase that boast of their efficacy against MSSA which i can only assume is methicillin senstive staph, but then why not just write SA - probably because then people might learn something. Sorry but this is one of my pet peaves.

Added Content To Itunes and Ipod

If Apple adds movies to the iTunes Music store, does this mean that they will introduce new video ipods? The current ones do not have a large enough battery life to watch two movies in a row.

Does anyone recognise the icon running in the dock on the UI pics !?

this thing looks awsome! although the last pic looks slightly super-imposed and i am not sure that it would run OSX in full....any thoughts??

(have we all stopped bickering now!??) ;)

Wow! That does look nice. Combine that virtual keyboard, possibly multi-point touch sensitive input, and Apple's design with these already existing [Mac Compatabile] products, "InterWrite SchoolPad & iPanel" http://www.gtcocalcomp.com/interwriteschoolsuite.htm and...

I think we got the MacPad/MacPod!

It looks like it. I think that they'll also introduce a new iMovie Video Store [iMVS?] and move the tv episodes over there.

Afterall, does it really make sense to buy movies and television episodes from an online "music store?" [yes, I know Tower Records and other physical stores carry movies and tv series stuff, but I'm talking about online stores].

Brand is too embedded in public mind. Best bet is "iTunes Media Store" :)

i've heard this argument, but iTunes isn't that embedded. the world and his wife knows iPod, yes, but not iTunes. if they changed it i don't think apple would risk losing any current or future customers over it. I think launching a movie download site under the banner of iTunes would be FAR more confusing to the non mac heads out there.....

Okay, so I'm kinda new to these release date things. Just wondering what times they normally run at and by what time do we get our information on what showed up at the show?

Thanks :D

Ditto. I believe we'll get an announcement this Tuesday along the lines of "with the wild success of music sales on the iTunes Music Store and with our 1 billionth song having been sold last week, today we are proud to present the all new iMovie Video Store featuring full length feature films as well as the television episodes that have become so popular in the past few weeks."

The iPod's success comes in large part from the success of the iTunes Music Store, so to accompany our new iMovie Video Store we are introducing the all new, widescreen vPod!"

Or something like that...

Movie Importing From DVDs

What are the chances that a new iTunes will allow you to transfer movies from DVDs to your computer then iPod just like the present one does with CDs.
