I saw a Galaxy Fold 6. Knowing Samsung is a first tier player, this tech is still not ready for prime time. No one is clamoring for a foldable Apple anything, so I hope they wait and get it right and not end up with the horrible crease that comes with the Fold 6.
No one is? How do you know. Have you polled every Apple user on the planet?

Why are they so slow with everything..
Then it comes to market with 60hz display in 2028.
My guess is their market is too big to move fast, meaning that it’s difficult to source everything in sufficient quantities while also not losing too much money if it flops. But yes, I think they are being too conservative, and it is damaging for the brand in the long term.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. No-one is asking for this, there is no major demand. It’s niche and is never going to dominate the market. It’s like a foldable bike. Useful to a handful of people, but most people need or want a regular or high end bike. Shipments of foldable Samsungs are down 80% since 2022. It really is a gimmick.
Why would you care so much if Apple did launch a foldable iPhone or iPad. Don’t you want choices as a consumer? If they improve the technology then why not?

I’m curious if the same people who are saying no one wants this are the same people who think Apple Vision Pro was something people “wanted”. I think a lot of people would HIGHLY consider a foldable iPhone if the tech was better. The claim of low demand didn’t stop Apple from launching Vision Pro or home pod. Just sayin.

I don't doubt that people would want a foldable iphone

but I don't understand why they would

Presumably an alternative definition of “pushouts” might be that Haitong analyst Jeff Pu is telling people what he predicts in a very loud voice.

I wouldn't be shocked if Apple considers and games out at least a dozen new product ideas every year.

That doesn't mean that all of them, or even just one, needs to or must move forward as a new Apple product.

That's a good thing.

Delayed? Too bad, I really looked forward to whipping a folding iPad out of my pocket to show people my favorite memes on a glorious 20-inches-when-unfolded screen. 😩

You got some wide pockets in them JNCOs. :D

But this sounds awesome for my use. I will get one for my little 9L sling bag. Keep a magic keyboard and trackpad at work and just bring this with me instead of a laptop that needs a bigger bag and has a smaller screen.

I'm curious if the same people ridiculing foldables are the same people who ridiculed phablet-sized phones back in the day when 3.5" and then 4" were "perfect": one handed use, pants with bigger pockets, developer fragmentation, abominations, man purses.

All these many years later and I'm still to see these bigger pocketed pants or man purses for iPhone.

As usual, we "see no point" and "nobody wants", etc only until Apple rolls out their version. This will be no different.

As rumors ramp up that it is about to hit, the sentiment moderates into "wait & see" and "I'll have to try one in person". When it is released/revealed, the same people become "Shut up and take my money" and "how did we ever get by with..." the latter especially flying hot & heavy putting down formerly "perfect" 4" screen sizes soon after Apple went phablet.

Will this dominate? I would guess no... not because having the flexibility to quickly go from smaller, pocketable screen to bigger screen is not desirable but because of relative price. Will many more want one once Apple offers one than they let on in posts BEFORE Apple offers one? I'm certain that they will. Will many suddenly "see the point" of a foldable once Apple offers one? I'm certain that rationalizations will pop up hot & heavy once Apple introduces theirs.

Else, if "no one wants one" and "there's no market for this", etc. why is Apple allegedly developing one? Are we daring to call them stupid?

I much prefer a bigger-than-phone (even MAX)-sized screen. So my cellular iPad mini also covers my telephony (buds) and mobile texting (iMessage) needs (VOIP app). It works just fine as a bigger-than-max-screen phone for me. The ONE thing iPhone has that it does not is pocket-ability. A foldable Mini would deliver the best of both worlds in my opinion... and I would happily be one of those "no-one wants this" who would BUY it... solely for that added capability.

Foldable phones are a solution in search of a problem. They introduce a huge number of compromises in the product. Someday the tech will be there but not this decade. So far the best use case has been a built in selfie stand 🤷🏼‍♂️🫠

Me too

I know someone who went from a Pro to a new RAZR and they are absolute loving it

I honestly think they are simply enjoying something interesting and different again

iPhones have become drop dead boring

I don't think there is any problem sourcing 120hz screens

This is 2024, not 2018

Apple are just greedy and lazy

Samsung (and a few bigger Chinese OEMs) are doing these pretty well. The problem is there's simply not a large market for them. Even if there was a huge demand for this type of device, the price points are so high that it excludes a good chunk of the market. Samsung, and others, are doing this for bragging rights just as much as they're doing it to "push the envelope of technology". Apple, historically, hasn't done things just to say they can do it. I'm not saying one is wrong or one is right. But I'd be willing to bet this just isn't a high priority to Apple right now because it has little to no effect on the bottom line. Samsung makes most of their mobile money off of their lower and upper mid-range devices, not these expensive niche "bragging rights and cool technology" products.

Cook is an ops/logistics/supply chain guy, and is incredible at it. But he's not necessarily a "big idea" kind of guy that would push this just to push it.

This is all just propaganda to make it look like Cook is innovating.

We'll see, but by the expected release dates I expect the "Next Big Thing" with phones to be something else and the foldable will be cancelled.

I think Apple's first foldable device is a foldable iPhone, the so-called iPhone Slim that has been hinted about recently. We may see it very late in calendar year 2024 or early 2025.
