I still haven't seen a single foldable device in the wild, despite Samsung being at its 6th generation of the technology.
I see lots of kids with them

I’ve played around with one a staffer had and didn’t see the appeal

Edit: by kids I mean 20s/early 30s

A foldable anything is not big on my list, but I would like to see the Apple iPhone support the Apple Pencil.

Does it not?

Every random cheap promotional stylus I end up with works fine with iPhone

If you think the majority of people are dropping nearly $2k on foldable phones just because they think they look cool, I've got a few things I'd like to sell you.

you realize what site you are on right?

there's a good portion of folks here that will buy whatever apple sells if they can afford it

Yes. Since no one actually reads the articles: the rumor summary currently looks like an iPhone 17 Slim in 2025, then an iPhone 18 Flip (not Fold - hamburger, not hotdog) in 2026 and an iPad 20" (but we all wish it is a MacBook Touch) in 2026. I expect one or both of those to slide into 2027.
We do?

I saw a Galaxy Fold 6. Knowing Samsung is a first tier player, this tech is still not ready for prime time. No one is clamoring for a foldable Apple anything, so I hope they wait and get it right and not end up with the horrible crease that comes with the Fold 6.
I know that anything that can be used to trash Android and Samsung is valid in here but i will say, i used a Fold 5 for around 20 minutes and very quickly, the “horrible crease” became invisible to me.

I wouldn’t get one because i dont like Samsung's OneUI and the crazy price, but the crease wasnt as bad as you state.

Just two days back I happened to visit Samsung Store for an accessory, when I saw the Fold 6, I think Samsung has finally nailed the Foldable with a sleek design, very comfortable holding in one hand (unfolded), screens looking amazing both sides, flat corners along with the textured outer shell was really ensuring, the clamshell mechanism is almost perfect without even knowing it is there while folding and unfolding. The crease problem is not a big issue to me and it wasn’t affecting the viewing experience. While folded, it wasn’t really bulky considering what is beneath the body.

Hope Apple has something to beat Samsung on this front!
Visit an independent Samsung retailer. As I mentioned before, they are appealing devices but have a terrible reliability record. I agree with everything else you said and would consider one if it weren’t for that.

I have to wonder why still post "foldables are a solution in search of a problem" anymore. I suppose they are just looking to stir the pot. I will break it down for you one more time:

Problem: Having to use and charge two separate devices (phone and mini tablet) and carry both of them around if you are mobile.

Solution: A book style foldable phone, which is a compact and lightweight device that is a phone and mini tablet in one.

I really don't understand why this is so difficult to comprehend. I also don't see why anyone would care if Apple adds a foldable iPhone to their line up. If they do, I hope it is a book style foldable. And yes, I know foldables aren't for everyone, but hating on something you haven't even owned and experienced is laughable. And please save the "well you're compromising this and that" speech because after owning six foldables, currently the OnePlus Open, I can tell you in my experience the compromise was using an iPhone and an iPad mini separately. And if you want to talk about cost, remember to get as close to the same specs between the three book style foldables in the US and an iPhone/iPad Mini combo, you'd have to drop $2198 (iPhone 15PM 512gb and iPad Mini 256gb with wi-fi and cellular). My OnePlus Open was $1,699, with 512gb storage and remember when it is in tablet mode you have wi-fi and cellular, which is why you'd need a wi-fi and cellular iPad Mini in this scenario.
I know you’re going to say, “But that’s what I want.” You and I both know you don’t need to have cellular on the iPad.

Why not use your phone as a hot spot? The first iPad I bought had a cellular radio in it. I bought it “just in case” something happened where I couldn’t connect to my phone, and never needed to turn it on. Even after traveling across the United States and China.

Yes you do, in order to have the same features across the devices. You can't use a wi-fi only iPad Mini when your not on wi-fi and I'm not talking about tethering it to your phone because that's not the same , but you can use a foldable phone when you're not on wi-fi.

Shipments of foldable Samsungs are down 80% since 2022. It really is a gimmick.
Except the foldable market as a whole has steady growth. Samsung has just had more viable competition and therefore lost some market share. This stat implies that fewer people are buying foldables, but that is not the case.

Startups are often accused of creating "a solution that's looking for a problem".
That's what foldables feel to me.
I hope they make something great and make me look like the fools who thought the MacBook Air was crap because it couldn't load DVDs but...
Phone sales have shown that people want large screens in their pockets. I would love to be able to unfold my iPhone to the size of an iPad. I haven’t handled a foldable yet but they’re too expensive to have compromises like a screen crease or overall durability.

If Samsung’s fold is almost $2k… apples folding phone will be priced starting $2.5k? I suspect Apple hasn’t come up with a folding phone not because the tech isn’t mature. But because they haven’t been able to bring down the costs.

Except they aren’t. Go in and befriend an employee at a Verizon/T-Mobile/AT&T store. Get them talking off the cuff. They’ll tell you what’s up with those folding phones. While their phones are getting better, they are still a disaster. They look great in the store, but there’s a reason no one has them in the wild. Longevity is not a thing with those phones.

Sure Apple could build one today, but it will have similar issues. And we all know how the tech press would respond if it were Apple phones failing like that. While Samsung is hacking away at solving those problems and making the customer take the brunt of R&D, Apple is working on the technology behind closed doors. When it’s ready it will be announced.
I know quite a few people at work who have the Samsung foldables and really like them. One guy is still on a gen 2 and has had no problems. I like the form factor as it would suit my use case perfectly and would get one if Apple made one in a heartbeat as it would fit in my Apple ecosystem. I don't get all the negativity. Don't like them? Don't buy one. I don't like the mac mini, but if it works for you go ahead and get one!

May depend on where you are, I see foldables around NYC rather often
Absolutely.
In Europe Android seems to be more popular than iOS (I have started seeing more and more iPhones lately), and most people buy cheaper Samsungs (which are great budget phones) or Chinese brands (such as Redmi, Oppo and whatnot).
Oddly enough, I have neveer seen anybody with a Samsung S22,23,24 Ultra; from what I'm gathering, people who have $1000+ to spend on a phone go with an iPhone, and wouldn't get a foldable from an other brand.
Each nation has its own situation.

I played with it at Best Buy. It’s nice!

Is this a real question? Do you think people only use their phones to check TikTok, instagram, text and call.
Sort of… my point was simply that the phone part of the device most certainly doesn’t need or rely on screen real estate. I do know that phones are used for many things beyond your list of options, but things like foldable screens (and much larger screens) are ultimately attempting to turn the phone into another device… which in my opinion speaks to a different issue altogether. Ultimately, a foldable screen could provide more screen real estate, however, I don’t think it will ultimately solve the problem of trying to have a single device provide the same functionality as a tablet or laptop.

I think any Apple foldables are rumourware*.

*: invented by the so called “supply chain analysts”
Apple has had a reasonably significant number of patents granted on foldable through the years, so you know there’s at least a few folks relatively high up interested in maintaining and funding R&D in that direction even if you ignore the supply chain rumors.

I think it’s likely Apple’s working on a folding phone personally
