I just want them to keep selling the 8+ at a lower price. If they pull it and only offer the 8 I’ll be peeved. I’ve been waiting all year to buy an 8+ at a reasonable price, not for more money than an XR like it is now. The higher storage 8+ price is ridiculous.

Too big. I'll hang on to my SE until they bring out something as small or smaller.
Ditto. As far as I’m concerned, any iPhone I buy from now on, (actually from last year on,) must meet the following criteria:
Must be the exact same external size and shape and have the same physical layout of buttons and switch as the iPhone 5S and SE.
Must have a HEADPHONE JACK. (This is non-negotiable.)
Must in one or more ways improve on the iPhone SE.
Must not cost more than a few hundred dollars, TOPS.

I don’t see them doing this, however, so when the last of my iPhone SEs die, I guess I’m done with Apple. By that time, my MacBook Air, (the kind that was still actually a MacBook AIR,) will probably be ready to be replaced, and my iPads will likely be largely obsolete.

I could write more about this, but it feels pointless.

It’s too bad Apple can’t bring an X style derivative in the smaller iPhone 8 form factor and still come in at a lower cost. Offer it as a smaller XR derivative featuring single lens, LCD to keep costs down. This would bring consistency to iPhone design. Call it the iPhone XE or something.

An iPhone X in the body of an iPhone 8, my dream phone.

I would actually love this. The iPhone 8 was the perfect size for me and my iPhone XS is a "little" too big.

Phone reviews are greatly skewed towards big male hands playing games. That's what iPads for. I need a small-size phone to keep contacts, chat, nfc pay, weather, music, maps, photos. Operated with one hand most of the time. Nothing calls for tablet in my pants.
I know this is anecdotal, but around here the women love the big phones. They always use them two handed, and carry them in their purses. No small pants pockets to worry about.

I’m a male with big hands and I don’t want the giant modern phone. I want something that fits comfortably in a pocket. My first phone was a Razr and I loved it. We are going in the wrong direction with bigger phones as far as I’m concerned. Unfortunately it is easy to convince people that bigger is better.

I for one thinks this makes a lot of sense, at least partially. I don't really see apple launching a phone mid cycle, but they can't really sell the 7/8 as budget alternatives much longer as it will soon be the 7/8 users that might need a budget replacement, and people don't want to pay for the same phone all over again. But since it is supposed to be a budget phone I'll bet there will be a lot of reused parts, like display and case, just like it was for the SE. A completely new designed phone would never be truly budget (~$450), look at the XR. I do think a XR mini would make a lot of sense though, in the ~$600 price range. Something for all you size-haters, apparently there are so many of you...

What will this phone do that the current SE doesn't do? It's like me asking for another 8+. I mean, it'll get the ios 13 update.
Compared to the SE, it's a bigger phone (which is more appropriate for iOS 13), with a faster SoC, and with more memory, and it will also support the new Apple AR technologies, etc.

IOW, it will be a big move forward for Apple in the lower cost mainstream market as compared to the SE. I suspect it will also sell significantly better too.

I don't know what phone you currently have but i ask you to compare the SE with the current 8.

iPhone 8 does way more stuff than the SE. With a possible 2020 refresh the 8 would be just faster obviously. (A13 chip)

Admittedly, I have never tried the SE. But I did have an iPhone 6. And it was a great phone for me to use most of the time. I only have the 8+ because I wanted a bigger screen to type on.

But for 99% of the times i used it, the iPhone 6 was the near perfect size. Could easily use it one handed if need be. And very pocketable. At the same time though, I don't think I would want to go any smaller than that.

But again, that's from someone who has never used an iPhone SE sized phone.

I hope Apple does make this rumored phone. I think there is enough of a market out there to make it worthwhile.

Agree. I don't really understand the folks that say the iPhone 6 / 6s / 7 /8 is also too big. It's barely a difference from the 4" 5 / 5s / SE and the 4.7" is still very compact. I had a 5s for 2 years and then a 6s for 3 years and i was able to use the 6s one-handed with ease.

The 4" phone was good for it's time, but those times are gone. I don't know what phone those people should get, it seems that every current Android is bigger than the 4.7" iPhones.

And i respect their wish of just wanting a small phone, but i just don't see it coming in the future. 4'7" is your best bet.

Size of the iPhone 8?
Can't apple understand that the majority of iPhone SE users (i have ever met) like the small size! It's not just about cost guys! We're not all die hard bleedin edge tech nuts, some of us just like a smaller phone in our pocket.

I've got no time for comments saying the iPhone 8 isn't much bigger, it is. I'm not small (6ft) but those iPhone are too big in my trouser pockets.

That’s an iPhone 6/7/8. Not an SE.

How difficult is it to simply make an SE with an edge-to-edge screen?

Apple’s entire phone lineup needs to be updated and all bezel-free.
Some people don't want crappy notch, headaches from FaceID etc.
If this turns out to be true then I'm not getting iPhone 11 but I'll get this instead. That would be win win for everything.
(I'm on iPhone 6 and ready to upgrade this year) Up to date components, cheap price tag and no faceID. Where do I sign, please? :)

The only two things I want in a new iPhone aside from the updated chipset are TouchID and no notch.

Hoping it starts at around $649, I don’t want to buy a cheap plastic phone, it needs a high price tag to reflect the high quality!

Don't worry, it will likely be based off the iPhone 8. Glass back and aluminium frame, you like that?

I’d be fine with this, except there’s really no excuse for not having an edge to edge screen at this point. Or at least slimming the bezels to the bare minimum.
Cool so you want the iPhone XS or XR to cost $399....... dream on. They cost almost that much to actually make!

I have an SE and love it. I’d be happy to buy an upgraded version of the phone at the same size. But if a new one is going to be in the bar of soap form, or if it’s going to be much bigger than I’ll pass. Part of why I love my SE is its shape and design, the rest of the iPhone lineup is slippery, too big and ugly.

The SE was and is the best design for an iPhone I’ve ever seen.

Theses news always link a cheaper iPhone with a smaller iPhone.

Apple itself leads to it as almost across almost all product lines anything larger is always more expensive.

These two situations should be addressed separately, the cheaper iPhone should be a sort of XR and users that like small phones should get a real smaller phone.

Apple plans to launch a new-generation "iPhone SE" in the form of a low-cost 4.7-inch iPhone this coming spring, sources in Asia have claimed.

iphone-6-iphone-se.jpg

Nikkei reports that the new model will be Apple's first low-cost smartphone since the 2016 launch of the popular iPhone SE, which started at $399, and while the name and price of the new model hasn't been decided, "it is viewed as the latest generation of the iPhone SE," according to the paper's sources.
Rumors of a new low-cost 4.7-inch iPhone modeled on the iPhone 8 first appeared in April via Economic Daily News. EDN's sources also claimed the device coming in early 2020 will include an LCD display. In addition, they also claimed it will feature a new PCB design to house Apple's A13 processor, a single-lens rear camera, and 128GB of base storage.

It's not clear if the rumored 4.7-inch iPhone would inherit the notched design and Face ID features of Apple's flagship smartphones, but Nikkei's references to 2017's iPhone 8 suggest it could retain the bordered screen and Touch ID-equipped Home button of that device to keep costs down.

Apple's iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR devices dominate its marketing, but the company continues to offer the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (starting at $599) as lower cost options alongside the even cheaper iPhone 7 series (starting at $449).

Apple could end sales of the iPhone 7 when its new flagship models launch later this month, which would leave a space in its line-up for a new device that could boost its share of the mid-tier smartphone market. But apart from being new and coming in at a lower price, we'll have to wait and see if comparisons can be legitimately drawn with the much-loved 4-inch iPhone SE of yesteryear.

Saw the headline and thought: this makes me so happy.

Read the article and thought: Ugh, not an SE, just another oversized phone. Yuck. Dangit Apple just keep the 4” screen size and update everything else. But above all: keep it small!

Costco is already selling the 6S for like $249 canadian or something like that. The 6S is old but its still a very capable device and could easily be a low cost option.
