Hopefully nothing. It will be cheaper because it will be 1.5 years old by the time of it's release (estimated is March 2020)

It's just a regular iPhone 8 with an A13 chip and 128 GB storage instead of 64 GB or 256 GB. But i'm thinking it'll be more than 399$. I'm guessing it's between 399$ - 549$.
I definitely agree $399/128GB seems terribly unlikely, Maybe I could see $399/64GB and they get rid of 3D touch to reduce the screen cost slightly?

I don't believe it will be 128 GB base, despite the rumour.
No, I think that's definitely unlikely too

Maybe they remove 3D Touch to lower the total cost. I mean, that new iPhone 8 should replace the SE. And the SE doesn't have 3D Touch. Xr also doesn't have 3D Touch. And it looks like that the iPhone 11 models (even the Pro ones) also won't feature 3D Touch. Instead we have Haptic Touch which is changing with iOS 13.

Yeah, it's pretty much guaranteed it won't have 3D Touch.

Good riddance.

Full disclosure-I have a Xs which is a great phone. But as I look back at how I use my iPhone, a new SE sized/shape iPhone with the latest chips and a decent camera that would fit my pocket would be perfect.

Yes that's what I'm thinking, if it's not going to be on the 11 pro models, I doubt any new model will have it going forward. If it allows for a cheaper screen assembly, maybe that will let them drop the price by $50 (over the $449 an 8 would be by March next year) and if it has a new camera that's likely to just be the existing XR module, and Apple are often generous with putting chips into low cost hardware (the SE got the latest A9) - I guess because it helps reduce overall unit cost to order and use more of them.

3D Touch is a huge failure, and a costly one in terms of parts.

According to the reliable supply chain experts, the death of 3D Touch in iPhones is a done deal. No more 3D Touch in any iPhone.

The internet that worked fine on 4" iPhones 5 years ago is not the same internet today. However, it's not just websites. It's also the OS itself. Parts of iOS 12 and iOS 13 and parts of their apps, even native ones, are ridiculously cramped on the 4" iPhones.

I use Safari and iOS just fine on my SE. However, some apps don't put a "Done" button on their keyboard, so logging into apps on an SE can be hard occasionally (the keyboard usually covers up the login button). That's fine, if the app doesn't support magic links then it's gone.

It's because people don't really use 3D Touch, right? Many complained that their Xr couldn't do Live Wallpapers anymore (because of the lack of 3D Touch), but the feature itself, no one seems to care...

Thanks for posting that, as it supports my previous statements. In other words, you have experienced that some apps/websites are already abandoning development for the iPhone SE screen size. This trend will only continue as time goes on.

I don't know all the reasons why, but I just know that people in general don't use it, and developers in general don't develop for it.

I forced myself to use it for a few months and then finally turned it off permanently, because I found it generally unintuitive, partially because it was so inconsistently implemented. I know some people love it and use it regularly, but all evidence points to them being a small minority.

I think that's pretty much been the case since the XR came out without it confirming the rumour it was going away completely. I do like the functionality, but if most of it can be retained without the extra costly display layers, that's a good thing. Even more so if it facilitates the return of Touch ID next year :p (there was a rumour that the 3D touch tech was interfering with the proper working of under display Touch ID).

Same scenario. I’m monitoring closely the new 5.4 rumored for 2020. I’ve reached a point where if I need to resort for a larger display, is my iPad or laptop, anything else in terms of communication, I don’t need a ‘large’ smart phone to have that anymore. Nor do I need the real estate consumed in my pocket for a larger smart phone where it’s obtrusive.

Hopefully this is what I've been wanting... basically an iPhone 9. 6-8 form factor with updated processor/camera/internals. I want what would have been the iteration of the 6 form factor, with a home button, touch ID, and no notch.

I just wish it was coming this September... My 6s is on life support.

I'd be interested to replace my 8 plus, but unfortunately doesn't sound like there will be a plus variant and I think 4.7" is just a little too small. Will have to see how it looks in the overall lineup, particularly how the battery life is, as that's one area I really don't want to regress in too much.

Same. I love my 8 Plus. Would like to see an upgraded version of that with the A13 chip at a cheaper price point. I guess it's not going to happen.

I would ditch my Xs in a heartbeat if they built an iPhone X-style around a 4.7” display. Yeah, notch right into that 16x9 1344x750 lcd and round the corners. Such a wee device would totally placate the SE crowd and make for a somewhat straighter line transition for those coming from 6, 7, or 8 iPhones what with the same size screen and all. I don’t care for these crazy tall aspect ratio phones. The X style always should have been about losing the chin and forehead, not filling them in (on iPhones anyhow, bigger display, same size body concept for iPads is peachy).

There is a rumour of a 5.4" which will be smaller than the iPhone 8 next year - it does retain the 19.5:9 aspect, though.

Cool so you want the iPhone XS or XR to cost $399....... dream on. They cost almost that much to actually make!

Never said that. I am fine with a basic one lens camera, standard SE screen, no Face-ID. Just a larger screen in a smaller body with a newer chip and I’m good.

Apps mainly, but I think only Instagram has the button problem and they support magic links (which are better IMO).

I don't think I've hit a website yet that doesn't support TinySafari. I think that as long as responsive design templates support the small screen Safari will survive. Even images still can be shrunk/scrolled.

I'm sort of an unusual case since I still remember webmail/WAP, so for me as long as the content is there I'm fine. Speaking as a developer the SE is still a valid target, but at some point product management will kill it even though it supports the latest iOS. I suspect that the 7 will become the smallest viable target Real Soon.

I see no reason at all for the term iPhone SE to be involved here.

If us SE lovers wanted the size device they are talking about, we could already have an iPhone 8 right now.

We specifically have the SE because it is smaller than even the iPhone 8 size

Looks like an iPhone 8 Refresh (which is fine with me - I like my iPhone 8, and if the camera on the new thing is a little better and the whole thing is generally a little faster, I might actually buy it).

It looks as though Apple is separating lower cost from smaller size. The rumored 5.4 inch display phone will not be much larger (physical dimensions) than an SE, but with premium features (including the A14 and superior cameras) at a premium price.

The 4.7 display model will be larger in physical dimensions (than the 5.4 inch model), offer decent features (A13) and decent camera, but with Touch ID, at a low price, likely $449. It will be a nice entry level phone, particularly developing markets and likely manufactured in India. By introducing it in the Spring of 2020, it will be advertised as having the latest processor (A13) at a low price, as was done with the A9 in the SE. All quite clever on Apple’s part.

I think it will be a 4.8" 458 PPI OLED -based (iPhone X-style) iPhone in a new chassis.

Won't have FaceID, to save costs.

Will have Under the Display TouchID.

Single Back Camera.

1080p Display.
