That’s an iPhone 6/7/8. Not an SE.

How difficult is it to simply make an SE with an edge-to-edge screen?

Apple’s entire phone lineup needs to be updated and all bezel-free.

People can’t just get satisfied with what they have. And bezel-free? What are you, Mr. Break-My-Phone-And-Unintentional-touch?

It seems like I am wrong, but I had previously predicted a smaller XR class LCD phone in the 5.5” size.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/the-case-for-a-5-2-5-5-inch-xr.2140865/#post-26549981

Right now the 6.1” LCD XR is the little brother to the 6.5” OLED XS Max. There is no corresponding LCD model to the 5.8” OLED XS. My prediction based on math was that Apple would eventually release an LCD model to fill the gap, and it would be 5.5” but with Face ID and would be closer in size to a 4.7” iPhone 8 due to the lack of Touch ID.

That and the discontinuation of the iPhone 8 would eliminate Touch ID from the entire iPhone product line and go all Face ID with a bigger screen than an iPhone 8, albeit with notch.
Hmm... I reread that article from today, and it seems my old prediction may not have been completely refuted just yet. So, let me present that year-old prediction of mine again as a possibility.

Eug's iPhone spring 2020 prediction
2.7" x 5.4" physical dimension
2.3" x 5.0" screen with notch and Face ID
5.5" screen diagonal
750 x 1624 resolution
375 x 812 screen points at x2 scaling
326 ppi LCD

iPhone 8
2.65" x 5.45" physical dimension
2.3" x 4.1" screen with Touch ID chin and big forehead
4.7" screen diagonal
750 x 1334 resolution
375 x 667 screen points at x2 scaling
326 ppi LCD

Even though the resolution of this hypothetical 5.5" iPhone in 2020 would be 750x1624, it would show the exact same amount of information as a 5.8" 11 Pro, due to the way iOS is designed. This phone would be roughly the same size as the iPhone 8, but because the screen is taller due to the loss of the top and bottom bezels, it would display 22% more information than the iPhone 8. This would also simplify the product matrix for Apple developers, since the screen points displayed and the aspect ratio exactly match the X, XS, and 11 Pro.

This would also make for a good pair with my predicted new budget 10.2" iPad with Face ID and Apple A12.

I just want them to keep selling the 8+ at a lower price. If they pull it and only offer the 8 I’ll be peeved. I’ve been waiting all year to buy an 8+ at a reasonable price, not for more money than an XR like it is now. The higher storage 8+ price is ridiculous.

Don't worry, it will get cheaper. I strongly believe that Apple will continue to sell the 8 / 8+ after next week's keynote. At a lower price point. If you are in the US, you can also look at the Refurbished one. It's basically a new phone. New shell, new battery, 1 year warranty. https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/iphone

If it comes with either Face ID or some form of under screen Touch ID etc. it would be very interesting. The home button look is very dated imho. But there is still the problem of the 2020 iPhone which will also come in a small-ish form factor version (5.4 inch) as well as having 5G and USB-C etc.

The new SE might be worth it for those who bought the original SE based on price, but not those who bought it because they wanted a smaller phone or liked the design etc.

Yes, the 8 and 8 Plus will continue to get sold until spring 2020 when this new model comes out. Then the 8 and 8 Plus will be discontinued at Apple, but some carriers will continue to sell it for a while.

Love my SE - fits perfectly in my pocket next to my wallet. The phone will be 4 years old next year (I think?) which falls right into the upgrade cycle - 2 years original phone plus an added two years with the cheap battery replacement program.

Apple's smart glasses (will they already be announced on September 10th?) might be connected to an iPhone (GPS and transmission and computing power, battery and a current, good camera) via fast Bluetooth.
The glasses are the big display.
If prices below 1k, many new customers will certainly try out this duo and enter Apple's world.

It will be exciting...

In times anybody's equipped with pocket-unfit mobile phones, a small iPhone will again be almost a sensation.....

Such a bizarre reaction. Why does it “need to stop”? No one is forcing you to buy one!

Because it's an outdated form factor. Honestly the 4.7" iPhone 6 / 6s / 7 / 8 isn't that much bigger. Still very compact and you can use it one-handed.

I'm wondering, if it's going to be based on the iPhone 8 (which should ordinarily still be available at the time this launches, for around $449/64GB) what exactly are they going to cut to make this a $399/128GB phone? I am guessing no P3 display, no true tone, no 3D touch, 3GB of RAM (which is still up from 2 in the 8), what else can they reasonably get rid of to shave the cost by $50 while doubling the storage and putting a new chip, more RAM and presumably the iPhone XR camera into it?

If this is true it must come with fp reader under the display, otherwise it would be laughable aged design for 2020... or at leadt resder in power button.. look apple, it is easy, just copy samsung s10e if you cant design modern things anymore

Hopefully nothing. It will be cheaper because it will be 1.5 years old by the time of it's release (estimated is March 2020)

It's just a regular iPhone 8 with an A13 chip and 128 GB storage instead of 64 GB or 256 GB. But i'm thinking it'll be more than 399$. I'm guessing it's between 399$ - 549$.

Wait what? A13 in a low cost iPhone model. Nope. Is not goin to happen.

I don't believe it will be 128 GB base, despite the rumour.

I use my iPhone 4s in my car as a lojack/music library (thank you T-Mobile 200mb for life!). i took it out of the cradle the other day and was like "damn, this phone feels nice." The 4/4s really was the pinnacle of phone design.

Yes it is. Unfortunately the 4” form factor has lost the race because of the development web design has taken.

When iPhone was released in 2007 we could zoom into (desktop class) websites. It worked perfectly well on the 3,5” screen then.

Now they are forcing mobile versions of responsive design on us. Often, there is no easy way to switch to the desktop version. Sites like amazon or google barely show content on one iPhone SE screen. It’s a scroll orgy.

Something similar applies to app design. It’a a huge effort to create designs that work perfectly well on an iPhone SE and an iPhone XS Max alike. Apple isn’t. going to force that extra work on developers for the years to come.

Yup.

The internet that worked fine on 4" iPhones 5 years ago is not the same internet today. However, it's not just websites. It's also the OS itself. Parts of iOS 12 and iOS 13 and parts of their apps, even native ones, are ridiculously cramped on the 4" iPhones.

BTW, the iPhone 6-8 have a Zoomed Display mode that exactly matches the iPhone SE's screen. However, with the elimination of an iPhone 8 model in favour my hypothetical XS lite model (which would be about the same size as the iPhone 8), this resolution would also be eliminated going forward. Since neither my hypothetical XS lite and the XS support Zoomed Display mode, once both the SE and 8 are gone, that would simplify app and website design significantly for Apple products.
