I always have to laugh at my Taiwanese classmates who pose for school pictures or in this case, flashing the Peace sign backwards, not realizing it means "f--- you." Or maybe they do...haha.
It only means that for your culture...I really don't find it funny that they are getting the mocked for such innocent thing.

Go ahead, read through the articles linked by the other member quoted you a couple posts before mine.

I wouldn't say they are being mocked. But that people think their stupid local hand gestures are universally applicable is amazing.

If anything, hand gestures and various selfie habits from a number of Asian cultures are now being adopted globally because of social media. Witness: the bizarre application of the wai in western cultures, the fish face, the V sign, the tongue sticking out of the side of the mouth, etc.

FWIW, every time I visit an Asian country and tour with a group, there's usually a photographer going "okay everybody make a thumbs up," "everybody make an ok sign," "everybody show me two fingers." Other countries just say "everybody smile." Seems like photographers in Asia specifically try to get pics of people making the same gestures.

For physical Apple retail stores, yes. But most of the other countries have had online Apple Store presence for a long time now (as well as Apple resellers) so it's not like they'll be entering brand new markets.

I know that...but there is a big difference between an actual store(s) and the alternatives like online and resellers.

Correct, yet the ginger haired chap, as well as Churchill is revered which means fu*% Off. There is no such thing as a "peace sign" pose other than a white flag
The only time you see the white flag is when there is a surrender. Not exactly peace

Churchill was not making that sign for peace, but for victory.

It is for the victors, who get to set the terms.

why do asians always do the peace sign pose
I asked my cousins on a South Pacific island and a friend from Japan this question 40 years ago and they had no idea, themselves. I find it interesting that this has not slowed down or died out as a fad 40 years later. My mom says it's not something her generation did (she's 80) and she says it started well after she emigrated to America in the mid 1960's. She suspects it might be something little kids picked up from Americans stationed in one of the many military bases all across Asia when the soldiers are out and about and trying to be friendly to kids despite language barriers. But that's just her guess.

Maybe you need to get out more and stop fixating on one image. Every Apple Store I visit does have employees of similar age mostly because of the salary that goes with those job positions. But I see an equal split between genders which is incredibly diverse in the tech retail world and I’m always seeing many different races too. Not sure where you go but Apple stores (cannot speak for Apple in Cupertino) are among the most diverse of any retail stores.

Apparently it's been around since the 70s and had been embedded in their culture since then. It's speculated that during the 72 olympics in Japan, American Olympian Janet Lynn fell during her performance and instead of the normal Japanese norm of "saving face" and trying to salvage the performance, she just smiled even though she new it was over. She became a Japanese celebrity. She was an anti-war activist, so kept flashing the peace sign in photos. People starting mimicking and it just became a thing.

Nowadays it's such a part of East Asian culture that kids grow up doing it without knowing why. In fact ask any East Asian and it's just a thing they do like saying cheese for us Americans. For us the excuse is "it's to make you show your teeth like your smiling". But in reality it's just a thing we are taught at a young age and helps us not feel awkward just standing there doing nothing while the photo is being taken.

Disclaimer: I was asking myself the same question when I saw this apple photo haha. I am Asian American but never do the peace symbol accept when I'm pretending to be an Asian tourist. I had to google it to find out for myself.

I dont know if it's due to age discrimination. I did wonder about that myself after noticing for a long time now that my local Apple stores are staffed apparently exclusively with employees under 35.

Then my sister-in-law took a retail job for a few months after getting laid off from her office job. She's in her late 50's and being on her feet for more than 3 hours on a thin carpeted concrete floor caused her aches and pains to have aches and pains. And she's pretty active at her gym, does a bit of kick boxing and snowboarding, so it's not like she is not used to activity.

I don't know many people over 40 who can just stand around for hours on end, even if they did it for a living when younger. I used to work retail just fine in my 20's, standing for 8-10 hour shifts, but now the noise and crowds and bleak lighting and standing around just as a customer has me fleeing an Apple Store after about 20 minutes.

We know Apple does want to project a relevant forward looking image, so it is possible they recruit a young perky type. But it's hard to know if they actively turn away older people or older people look around and decide that's not the environment for them.

The member said he/she laughs at his/her Taiwanese classmates when they do that.
To me, that would be mockery because he/she decided to laugh at them instead of telling them what that hand gesture mean in a different country.
I have went through the whole mockery and adjustment experience myself and it is simply sad to see someone have to experience that themselves.

Rumor is that Apple did not have an official Apple Store in Taiwan because of its relationship with a retailer shop. Its boss is a rich business man and has a good relationship with Apple. He doesn't want Apple to have Apple Stores in Taiwan so his retail shops can keep making profit.

A "good relationship with Apple" means that Apple would be willing to let him have all the profits rather than Apple?

Nobody has THAT good of a relationship with Apple. Sounds like a completely BS rumor to me.

Every Apple Store I've been in, in multiple cities/states, have exhibited a wide cross-section of employee race, age, and gender. Seemingly more so than other retail stores.

You've lodged quite an indictment. Perhaps you have data to support that?

A big congrats to all our friends in Taiwan!

My experience in Apple retail stores is limited to the several I have visited in the Washington D.C. area. But this has been my experience as well.

I would hope most older folks aren't working there, it's basically a step up from minimum wage but not really something you should consider as a career IMO.
