When it comes to these band names and songs, Grandpa Simpson was right:

I used to be with it, then they changed what it is. Now what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems weird and scary to me. And it’ll happen to you!

FAKE animoji music videos AREN'T impressive. This just reveals Apple's lack of creativity. If they made similar videos using actual animoji captures from the iPhone X, then that'd be cool. But these are really dumb, and are borderline false advertising.

TrueDepth camera on the iPhone X.

I think this was debunked by MKBHD. He was able to use Animoji on the X by covering up the TrueDepth sensor. I believe Animoji is tied to the standard camera.

which begs the question... why is it exclusive to the X

whether you like Animoji or not, you should be questioning why Apple is holding this exclusively to the X as an upsell feature when it's possible they could have made it work on all iPhones, or at least the 8s. Instead of repeating the lie that Apple's perpetuating about it needing the TrueDepth sensor.

However, these are kind of cute.

He also followed up on that video stating he was wrong. The depth sensor isn't constantly firing, but does so periodically. So if you just cover the depth sensor from start to finish, Animojis won't work correctly.

I saw that part, but as noted, it's not necessarily required. EG, Sony has similar tech without TrueDepth. in fact, the REST of Apple's AR uses the rear camera for bumpmapping and surface detection.

I'm sure the TrueDepth camera made it EASIER. But as other's have shown (even apple themselves, it wasn't required).

its really one of those things where Apple seems to have purposely designed something to keep it exclusive, when they probably didn't need to

How does AR relate to a depth mapping face camera? One is meant specifically for mapping 3D points on a complex face, the other is for mapping points on a flat surface–you can't compare those two.

Also yes its possible to have the animojis without the depth sensor, but considering how complex and subtle the face tracking is, I'd much prefer having quality control for it and not just letting any ol' camera try and do it. I don't think they are keeping it exclusive to the X just because, its not like people are running to buy the X for animojis.

Apple needs to add this functionality into the Clips app. Is there some copyright reason they couldn’t?

AR works partially by creating a depth map of the area that is to be included in the scene, since it must know where things are in relation to your position.

As for "subtle" of the face tracking. you can do highly sufficient face tracking with a standard camera, as evidence by FaceRig computer application which performs the same functionally (and predates) Animoji. it's available, and provides extremely detailed animations using any standard (but high quality) webcam.

It just requires sufficient processing power in order to be able to work. Which, is arguably not a problem for the iPhone's A series processor. if the X is capable of it, The 8 should be too.

I think it's a marketting attempt to appeal to younger audience, to have teens want the X instead of the 8 for this functionality.

These ads were fantastic! I love it, and the usage of the animoji's are awesome. I hope they bring an app to the app store that allows every day users to do stuff like this :)

Should have made it by actually using an X and tracking the singers face. Now that had been awesome.

I wonder was the initial project aim here to animate actual faces?

[edited to remove a comment about 3D profiles]

I wonder was the initial project aim here to animate actual faces? Because Apple have 3D face profiles for all iPhoneX users. Kind of a creepy thought ... especially when coupled with voice synthesis.
Apple does NOT have 3D face profiles of ANY iPhone X Users.

Quit lying.
