Merge no...make a device that can run both OS depending on the current setup....yes for the love of god please. The Magic Keyboard has shown how good this could be. Attach a magic keyboard it becomes MacOS, no keyboard or trackpad, good ole iOS. That justify that $300+ keyboard more.
This!! but honestly going with the M series chip; why can’t I just plug my phone into a external monitor and it runs OS X, when it’s not plugged in it’s iOS. My phone is currently more powerful than my 2015 MBP

All it would take is swapping the OS to Mac OS, giving it a keyboard and there's your Air, and the iPad Pro would still end up being the superior device now due to the slightly better specs and vastly more storage or RAM if you wanted it.
I think you can get a 2TB/16GB MacBook Air...

It's stupid to merge both products or both operating systems. No point. You might think you want it, but you're not going to use it in the long run.

Merging iPad and Mac is just plain stupid.
Until Apple matures iPadOS to behave like macOS and can still claim it never merged but we all know otherwise. I am sure you will forget your claim and rejoice how wonderful the future iPadOS/macOS version is and backtrack to wiggle your way out.

Sure sure Apple was also not working or had an ARM based macOS it’s just stupid said the Time Traveller.

The iMac doesn't because the iPad Pro has Lidiar Scanner and the iMac doesn't.
Technically speaking it does not use LiDAR as it’s on the rear camera housing of iPadPro not front. Whomp whomp.

Center Stage is using the wider field of view and just cropping the ends, if you go beyond that 120 degree field it’s not going to automatically follow you.

Xcode for iPad please.

Problem with this uncompromising stance is that developers are left in the dust. Allow us to use Docker at least, so we can have run insulated containers for development. I want to be able to run a database, compile Go/C++/Rust, use Matlab, etc. on my iPad, and I know I’m far from being alone

Consumers would jump on having this ability to have macOS run on iPads.

But there are a few salient reasons why Apple won’t like this occurring:

1. Cannibalises sales of MacBooks
2. Screws up their walled garden approach to iOS
3. If the make MacOS on the iPad open to download and install apps like it is on a proper MacBook, then that’s a massive revenue stream they are missing out on.

I think they’ve thought about it, but for financial reasons, have decided to bury it.

I don’t mind a closed App Store - would be happy for them to close off MacOS on the iPad, as long as they give us the proper operating system.

They might not become the same tool, but their increasing interconnectivity is creating a merger of sorts.

Remember when Jobs said there will never be a stylus for an iPad?
He never said that. In talking about the iPhone, he said that if one needed a stylus to operate a phone, it was a poor design. He was comparing it to the Palm and Windows which needed a stylus for basic operation.
Yeah, iPads will have to run mac apps to be a real computer. They’ll realize it sooner or later.
I have no idea what you mean by “a real computer”? Windows machines do not run Mac Apps, and I think they are “real computers”, as are Linux machines and many other devices. Pretty sure it is a Turing-complete system with an OS capable of running applications, seems like a real computer to me.

They keep saying that, but every year they’re more and more alike
Luckily being alike and being the same are not identical concepts. And that’s kind of the whole point. They could even have complete feature parity and still be distinctly separate OSes with a different UX / UI.

Then Apple will get much more profit. They should merge them. Unless Tim Cook seriously cares about money.
If Apple could build an iPad+Mac device, they would get much more profit, because they would have a product no one could match. Problem: you can’t merge a tablet and a computer.

OK, this sounds good, but it would have to be optional, the macOS build would have to be optimized for the iPad, I mean, there are quite a few variables.

I think Apple keeps shooting this down because they're not interested in doing it, or perhaps THEY DID and determined IT SUCKS.

All that said, as long as iPadOS remains the primary OS on iPads I'll be happy to eat my words if Apple decides to do this.

All that matters is if the iPad experience is on par. So call it what you will, makes no.

Presently, this isn't the case.

I would be down for a DEX type of situation where the iPad, when connected to an external monitor, displays either the existing macOS UI or some special multi-window iPadOS UI. Could also apply for being docked into the Magic Keyboard. That would be extraordinary.
