Is it the fact that it’s Apple-branded?

No, that's reversing the causality.

It's because how much thought Apple put into making a product like AirPods seamless and nice that we think of the brand that way.

Are we in a post world where anything Apple releases is automatically awesome?

No, they sometimes mess up pretty bad, such as with the butterfly keyboard.

I don’t get why they are so special compared to other headphones and earphones out there. Can someone enlighten me?

They were small, as comfortable as the wired EarPods and brought in that extra “wireless convenience”:

Apple AirPods 2 -

Apple EarPods -

They do some quality testing there, have a look. 🤚

I love having both Airpods and Airpods Pro. I can extended-wear the Airpods in a quiet environment, but use the Airpods Pro at other times (kids are around; jogging wind and car noise; on airplanes) and the noise cancellation is fantastic. And for both, they are so small, they are easy to keep with me in a pocket and recharge in the case.

The mic on the Airpods is mostly junk though: phone call or voice dictation pretty much just does't work. The Airpods Pro mic seems to work surprisingly well though.

On my 2nd pair of the 2nd gen of Airpods: I have had some pairing and battery charging issues. I hope they will continue to tweak the design to improve this.

I have to agree here. I resisted for a long, long, time. Last fall purchased AirPods 2 in a wired charging case for an insane deal on Amazon.

Can barely keep them out of my ears these days. Pros someday perhaps once Apple finishes a hardware redesign, but with no need for ANC my 2's are perfect. ;)

AirPods are by far the most comfortable and convenient headphones I have ever owned - - I've lost count of the number of times I've turned off my music and forgotten I'm wearing them. Also, the original AirPods' charging case is the best Apple design since the iPhone, a pleasure to use and it tucks in my jeans' coin pocket.

AirPods and the Three Stages of Apple Criticism

That is a great article and it is mostly spot on. Thanks for the link.

As a recent AirPods Pro owner, I have nothing but great things to say about them. How easy they were to setup, how good the sound quality is, how easy it is to use them with all my devices (iPad, MacBook and iPhone). They just work, they sound very good, they don’t fall out of my ears, they look decent, the battery life is awesome, call sound quality is great, etc.

Apple are trend setters, that is the reality. If people can’t understand that then they don’t understand the modern tech industry. When they make a product other companies tend to answer back with their own. Apple is going the same with the Surface (iPad keyboards and trackpads). The problem is, when others try to mimic Apple, a lot of them are terrible products or simply are not as good as Apple’s so they don’t sell.

The last product Apple made that I can think of that was terrible.... the butterfly keyboard design and the $700 wheels. I don’t think anyone is going to attempt to one up those “Magical Innovation’s”....

Yep. Plus they're a status symbol and convey to everyone else — very visibly and noticeably — that you own not just one put two Apple products.

Don't get me wrong. They're very good. But at $249, they are like most Apple products: padded with a huge profit margin.

Do you really consider something produced in millions with a triple digit price tag a status symbol? I think it’s way too common for that.

Tried it? It's awful. I've been doing it for a month now while I'm away from my home because I left my AirPods behind. That lightning connector sticking out is such an annoyance compared to the regular headphone connector itself.

Really? How so?

I use Bose QC25 & QC30 for Private music listening & audiobooks in the office & at home with my family on account of the noise. The AirPods though are invaluable when listening to audiobooks in bed; no trailing wires and I can lie on my side with my head flush against the pillow with AirPods in and with no trailing wires back to my phone to get tangled in or caught. Can’t do that with either of my other headphones.

Also early morning TV watching as redirecting the audio from Apple TV to AirPods is seamless.

love my first gens AirPods, and if anything happened to them I’d buy a replacement pair in a heartbeat.

I like my AirPods for those tasks as well.

It has nothing to do with their “branding”, at least not in the pejorative sense you are using it.

The original AirPods were and remain amazing. They connect quickly. The sound is fantastic. They are comfortable, light weight and have tremendous battery life. The carrying case and battery pack was clever and innovative. Like most of Apple’s successful designs, the Airpods have become the standard design language for the product class.

That they easily let in ambient noise is a huge benefit too, unless you like being completely sealed off from the world. I often forget I’m wearing them.

if you can point me to a similar product — that was available in 2016, that isn’t a complete airpods ripoff, that comes in at a similar price point, and that functions as well or better than AirPods— please let me know.

Strong points here, I only have to disagree on the sound quality. Fantastic is not coming to mind when we’re looking at the way these sound especially anything based on the old EarPods design that doesn’t seal the wearer of from the surrounding noise. Average sound at best but great great convenience in daily use.

Great, the future is wireless. Easy pairing, it is always ready and charged, it is pocketable and great. And I’m talking about the 1st gen.

For those who are asking for wires, if you think wireless means less quality, you should not use a phone for music if you are an audiophile anyway.

Just like you shouldn’t use a mobile phone when you want to take pictures as most dedicated cameras offer better image quality?
As long as one can hear differences in quality between different headphones they are perfectly fine for audiophile listening, aren’t they? Nobody buys dedicated audio players as an alternative anyway.

These products prove that Apple is the single best company that’s ever existed in human history. No other company compares. I’ll buy every gen AirPods that ever come out, every new iPhone and iPad, every new watch, and a computer every 3 years. I’m sold for life! No other company will ever convince me to switch

ANC is working just fine on mine, not sure what all the outcry was for. Actually, it was only a small outcry. No biggie

Best best best!

Actually it's more like, any person with two fingers in their forehead can see these are overpriced mediocre sounding tampons, people thinking this garbage provides any kind of status must be god's closest souls.

I’m not sure I could see anything with fingers IN my forehead.

If only the scanned ears like mine. AirPods, no matter if pro or not, start hurting my right ear after 30-45 minutes.

luckily the sennheiser momentum true wireless 2 fit and sound like a dream.

Status symbol? Depends. I suppose a Mercedes smart car can also be a status symbol in the right circumstances.

Do you know what the profit margin on the AirPods are?

No, don't get a job, live off unemployment and buy AirPods, Apple watches and When August 1 rolls around. Start Crying saying the feds need to extend the unemployment. Do what is right, look for a job, sharpen up your resume. Buy business clothes save some money for a rainy day like right now. Read this fable https://fablesofaesop.com/the-ant-and-the-grasshopper.html

Yup, totally the point that’s being discussed here.

There are apparently a boat load of people who disagree with the sentiment about “overpriced mediocre sounding tampons”.

Yup, for sure people don’t like intentional provocation to spice up a debate.

Try switching from the macbook to the ipad and vice versa.

the device you want to use the bluetooth headphones on should be the only device you need to touch to pair. standard bluetooth headphone require you to go to the other device to manually disconnect.

until you realize you didn't properly wound up the wire before putting it away and you have to untangle it everytime you want to use it

Most users would adjust their habits after a few times having the cables messed up though. At least the ones with the thinking ahead brain.

This is why ones choice of electronic products are subjective:

I didn't know there was a reason to upgrade every year before. If your current phone works and makes you happy then keep it. Apple actually encourages people to keep their old devices longer because it's better for the environment.

How does Apple encourage that? With pricing?

Controversial to us but extremely calculated and planned well in advance by them. By forcing into people the need to get BT headphones. This was as they had just acquired beats and were about ready to launch their AirPods. Extremely greedy and jerk move on their part. The worst is that they weren’t honest about it and said they needed to ditch the headphone jack because of waterproofing. No it was for them to rack in billions more with their products.

I don’t think they ever claimed the reason was waterproofing. That happened at the same time though.
