Joz can make all the asinine claims he wants to but mobile gaming will never be anything more than mediocre. On-screen controls are no substitute for mouse/keyboard and hardware control methods to say nothing of the power/performance of the games. They can bring all the "Top Shelf" titles they want to iOS but it will always be inferior.

If they want to push gaming then bring out an adaptor for iPhones and iPads to convert them to something like the switch or bring out a dedicated handheld. If they did a handheld that had full online support with built in chat etc like Xbox Live and at a decent price they could clean up.

I personally think Apple should do what Facebook does with VR games, where they will help fund the really good ones to bring them to the platform. If iOS becomes a platform for quality games, it could be a major selling point over Android. At the moment there are just too many games which could be good, but are ruined by pay2play.

Fair go Macrumors, am I actually allowed to read anything anymore!? The amount of banner and skyscraper ads this morning is ludicrous.

I don't even bother with mobile games anymore. They monetized them into oblivion. It's quite sad actually.

Yeap pretty much, it’s a massive multi billion dollar ‘freemium’ business... and Apple takes a 30% cut...
Yeah forget the ‘experiences’ they are trying to offer you, the best ones come from games like F1 2016 or Grid. Premium games.

As is the norm for these articles I’ll remind everyone of what the game makers REALLY want from you:

http://toucharcade.com/2015/09/16/we-own-you-confessions-of-a-free-to-play-producer/

This interview is also why I laugh at those who won’t use google because of security risks, your data is mined and sold across so many platforms now of the systems you use, it’s a way of life.

Sure! If you have an Apple TV ($150) and want to game properly, you still have to buy a PS4/Xbox ($299-$399). It would end up costing around the same. Maybe they could release an Apple TV Pro with such gaming capabilities?...
Do you really trust Apple to compete with console makers who have the slimmest margins on hardware? If Apple ever released a game-first platform, it would be destroyed by the competition and hated by gamers who bought it because Apple would take their time to update it once every few years using old iPhone CPU and GPU technology. They already have customers turned sour based on their MacBook Air, Mac Pro and Mac mini update schedule. Apple has never been good with gaming. They just happen to fall into casual gaming because of the iPhone success halo.

iOS is the most advanced and powerful gaming platform in the world. Coupled with the incredible performance and capabilities found in Apple devices such as iPhone X and iPad Pro, this is the place serious gamers now come to play.

Developers disagree, else they'd be losing tons of money.

Developers go where the money is. And that would be (as of 2018) iOS and Android.
Big developers can afford both. Most developers have to choose one and then a plan to support the other platform 6 moths later based on initial sales. Not all, but most developers consider iOS first.

With an iPhone as a controller. It’s already more sophisticated than any other games console controller. Full touch screen, camera, gyro... friends arrive, sync em up or open an app. With some decent thinking you’ll have so much scope for games without needing anything beyond the “hub”/Apple TV to host it.

If they did that and properly committed to it with some great developers & games, I honestly believe they’d rival or even conquer Nintendo for casual home gaming.
Sophisticated maybe, certainly not better and mobile gaming never will be.

Rubbish. The world doesn't revolve around your narrow-minded view of what constitutes good gaming.

It's all about exclusives.
Nintendo has Mario
Xbox has Halo, etc....
Apple will someday in the future overpay a developer to create an exclusive title that will win over some gamers. The hardware is there with the A10X ATV chip and the fantastic mobile potential with the iPhones and iPads.

Mobile gaming is destroying the soul of video games. Even Console Games have adopted the IAP / grinding model. It has turned me off games. I was so excited for the possibilities for games when the iPad first came out and now I actually haven't bothered to look at games on my iPad for well over a year. I think the last game I played was Hitman/Lara Croft Go. Both were solidly enjoyable games. It's all style over substance though it seems. Pac-Man has more depth than most IOS games! Look at Alto's odyssey. Looks great, had me excited and then I watched the preview. It's nothing more than an endless runner that's been seen 1 million times... and that's probably no exaggeration.

Yet we shouldn't be surprised. Look at movies. The industry is at an all time low in terms of creative, fun movies and just churns out Superhero sh*te or remakes/reboots ad nauseam.

Hardly rubbish. The controls on mobile gaming ARE mediocre no matter how much you wish it weren't. The graphics are subpar, consoles are far superior in both hardware and quality and the race-to-the-bottom (which Apple's encouraged greatly) has produced a glut of low-quality games. Some gems are to be found but they're few and far between.

you don't want a sense of pride and accomplishment for playing for 5100 hours to unlock all the content you paid $90 for?

Again, trying to fit the narrative to your narrow view of games. Not all games require high-end graphics cards or a mouse/keyboard.

The good ones do

nah. it's a bonus but there are some amazing games that offer veryrun of the mill graphics that are quite fun to play.

even old games aren't bad just because the graphics are dated. many have fantastic gameplay, awesome stories, and are quite engaging, even if the graphcis aren't great.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a PC gamer. I love pretty graphics as much as the next guy :p

You come across as just another elitist gamer who thinks games can only be good on a new console or gaming rig. You are absolutely wrong.

This. I’ve been a gamer since the 80’s. I can remember playing text-based games that were fun because they relied on a good story and gameplay instead of eye candy.

How about you address my points rather than hurling insults? You're telling me that a piece of glass is equal to a hard controller? Forget a mouse and keyboard, fingers on a piece of glass is equal to a controller in the hand? That PubG & Fortnight mobile are on par with their pc/console counterparts?
