I like to have things when they are available as well. In fact, I ordered an iPad 1 the first day, and it was delivered to me the day it was released at retail (30 April 2010). This is how it should have gone down, to help people save time and to make sure they got the model they wanted, two very beneficial things to consumers I think.

They had the time. For example, they did it the right way when it came to the Verizon iPhone, and the space between the announcement and sale was about the same as this. However, Apple got burned by the Verizon iPhone launch and NEEDED to have lines and the free publicity it generates, so they cooked up this little scheme.

With that said, if someone was willing to suck it up, and know they were exchanging their dignity to be the first to get the new iPad, so be it.

People like you make me laugh. Who cares if someone wants to wait in line all day for something that they want? Just because you don't, does that make you some kind of a better person?

I was just at my local mall and started chatting with some people in line. Most of the ones I spoke with were there for the experience. They were having fun and enjoying sharing the experience with those around them. A few of them also said they considered ordering last night, but preferred to do it this way. Said it was way more fun. I'm sure you'll be chagrined to know that their dignity was fully intact.

iPad2 store violence

At the Apple store in NYC a man exited with one of the first iPad2's sold, only to be chased by a crowd of male teens who knocked him to the ground and unboxed his iPad2 and then later posted videos of their exploits on YouTube. When asked what happened, the shocked man, still holding his new iPad2 tightly in his hand responded "I started to run but there were too many of them. They tore the cord on my pretty white Apple bag ripping it from my wrist. Then they held me back while one of them ripped all the plastic wrap off and another one opened the box and started taking pictures of everything with an Android phone. One of them stole the free Apple sticker that came in the box. Then they put everything back in the torn Apple bag and ran off. I have never felt so violated in all my life. To be unboxed is bad enough, but then to have it shown on YouTube is devastating"

I was in line at Best Buy, but they didn't have any white ones.

So I walked next door to Walmart. Where I was the only person in line.

Sadly the only had one white iPad and it was a size I didn't want.

He should be glad it's on YouTube. They recorded their crime! Idiots.

I could have gotten a black 64GB at Target, or a white 32GB at Walmart. Was looking to get a 32GB Black one, so passed on the others. The Apple store had a line all the way down to the next department store, and sheriff deputies at the front not allowing anyone in the store, not even to browse.

I was sort of amazed that all of these people were standing in line to throw out at least $500, but do these people have jobs or what?

Either way, looks like I'll be ordering online. Just as well, as I like to have a case and protector waiting patiently for it!

I was ~60th in line at Best Buy, and they ran out of all 3G models by the time I got in. So my coworker and I went to a nearby Verizon store, and were out with our iPads by 5:15 (I *did* get the last black 32gb though).

The Apple store at the nearby mall had an INSANELY long line...

I was ready to buy, saw the line in at the store had to be well over a thousand people, so I turned around and went home.

The Target across from Atlantic Station in Atlanta looked no more busy than normal. Interesting. I wonder if they got a shipment in or if they will be in stock Saturday.

I preordered online this morning at 3:47.

On the way home I called my Walmart on a whim. He said they had 2 16gb versions and no one in line. I asked the clerk his name and told him I'd be there in 5 min. Waited from 4:30-5:00. Me and one other lady were the only ones waiting. We got ours and left smiling.

Cancelled my online order on the spot.

Talk about dumb luck. I walked up to my local Best Buy and there were only 4 people in line. I waited for a few minutes, and suddenly 30 people appeared. They only had 16.
I walked out with my white 16gb in hand! WHOO HOOO!!!

I just think they should have done this launch like the iPad 1 launch and the Verizon iPhone 4 launch. I don't think that is asking too much....do you? Do a pre-order and have the items arrive at customers homes the day they go on sale in the stores. This way - EVERYBODY WINS. Makes 100% sense to me.

If you live near an Apple store, great. Go and enjoy the 'community'. But if you live 50 miles+ from one, and with gas @3.50 a gallon, its an extra hassle. Also, many people have jobs/family/kids and cannot take off 4 hours to stand in line for the 'community'. Add to this the 'grab bag' of models leaves open the possibility you will not get the one you want.

That's no sense really - Apple gets a lot of FREE PR by people lining up at the stores.

Also, if you can afford their stuff, you can afford the gas to get there...

Does your overbearing sense of entitlement keep the lights on at your house too? Serious wahbulance material. I wish I lived 50 miles from a store even STOCKING iPads in the next two weeks - I don't have the option to even drive being overseas. And I'd give my right arm for $3.50 a gallon, good lord -- try $7+!

Here it is:

That is clearly the original iPad -- look closer, it isn't even dual core!

Apple doing this to get PR, at the expense of the customer experience is what is angering. It speaks volumes to me about the extents this company they will go to...just for PR. Very troubling for us that are heavily invested in the ecosystem.

Sure, if you can buy it, you can afford the gas. However, why waste? Only fools waste resources needlessly.

Then it is probably a good thing we only have about 5.8 billion fools on this rock.

line's getting long here at ala moana apple store in honolulu. weather is simply beautiful so no problem sitting outside. earliest people got here at 8am, once the roads were clear and the tsunami warning was lifted.

i got here at 9:30 and am about 12th in the queue. most schools are closed today and many government workers are on "furlough friday", so more people than usual at the mall on a friday. the only question i'm still debating is what model to get...to 3G or not to 3G...

Got in line at Fair Oaks mall in Fairfax Va at about 4:00pm EST. Left at 4:20pm after being told basically everything but the 16gb models was sold out (i want a 64gb).

Made it to Best Buy in Reston by about 10 to 5, all tickets had already been handed out. Heard that Target only had about 5 ipads total.

Didn't expect the lines to be this bad for the second ipad! :( Anyone know when Apple Stores will be restocked?

No iPad2 for me

Went to local Walmart at 5pm, they weren't even selling any, too small of a store. Off to AT&T, greeted the greeter and she put my name down on a list, looked about 8 or 10 people before me. Turns out they only had 5, all white, 16 or 32GB. They couldn't even get anyone to step up and take the last one, a white 16Gb Wi-Fi only! I rolled out and will wait till supply is adequate.

waiting in like at the apple store in clarendon, va.. they ran out about 25-30 people ahead of me.. just broke down and ordered a 64 gb online.

i think i may switch to the 16gb one..
