At the Apple store in NYC a man exited with one of the first iPad2's sold, only to be chased by a crowd of male teens who knocked him to the ground and unboxed his iPad2 and then later posted videos of their exploits on YouTube. When asked what happened, the shocked man, still holding his new iPad2 tightly in his hand responded "I started to run but there were too many of them. They tore the cord on my pretty white Apple bag ripping it from my wrist. Then they held me back while one of them ripped all the plastic wrap off and another one opened the box and started taking pictures of everything with an Android phone. One of them stole the free Apple sticker that came in the box. Then they put everything back in the torn Apple bag and ran off. I have never felt so violated in all my life. To be unboxed is bad enough, but then to have it shown on YouTube is devastating"

return for a full refund. Then get a brand new sealed one, and enjoy your unboxing my friend.....enjoy your unboxing

I wonder if Apple will do an "iPad 2 Availability Tool" thingy for the retail stores.. That'd be nice.

I'm looking for the same, but I don't think they did it since iPhone 3G. Would be very convenient at this point.

Interesting to hear that some AT&T/Verizon stores are selling WiFi-only models. I never would have thought to even try them. I'm wanting a 16GB model, don't care what color. For anyone who left an Apple store empty-handed, did they give any indication as to whether they were expecting more shipments the next day (today)? I suspect they will be.

As far as the NYC Apple Stores go, here's the rundown of current stock:
Fifth Ave - Only 64gb Verizon
Upper West Side - None
W14th St - Unknown (Phone is busy for 20 minutes)
Soho - Only Vzw 32/64

They "don't have any idea when another shipment is coming."

I was Duped

I could not get off of work early yesterday at at 8 PM went to, Best Buy, Verizon store, Target, and finally the Apple Store. No Ipad2's left anywhere.
This was to be my first Apple product and I am new to the product launch
process. The Apple store said to call and they get shipments every day and they have no prior knowledge of what time the truck will come or how many, if any at all, Ipad2's will be on it. I definitely feel like a dup and there is only so much BS I will go along with to hand my money over to any manufacturer for a product. Some may like to play this game, I do not. Any guess when I may be able to purchase one of these Damn things?

Best Buy, Montgomeryville, PA

Just got more iPad2's, but only Verizon 3G models. I stopped in around 10:30-11. Sounds like they got a bunch. They said they had a lot last night as well, everyone in line was able to get an iPad2.

Target had none (sold out), Walmart said they did not get any and didn't know why.

I should of gotten one last night. Now I can't find one in stock anywhere :(

All the bestbuys don't have them, apple stores are out of stock - so are target and walmart in the NJ area :(

Oh well, what are we up to now - 3-4 weeks - from apple. I guess I have no choice to wait :/

Went to Best Buy this morning and the store manager said they were told no new shipments for 3 weeks.
Taarget is sold out with no clue when they will get more.
Biltmore Apple store sold out said they "may" get more later today, but to call first.

I call this a cluster F of a launch if you ask me.
This was more a publicity stunt than a launch.
Creating the illusion of demand by sending pathetic quantities to resellers and keeping the majority of the stock at Apple stores.
And then the whole, Friday 5 pm launch. Really??? Most people had to work, not waste a work day standing in line.

Lame. Simply lame.

There is an explanation for today's hype. Here is from Bloomberg:

When Apple Inc. (AAPL) releases a product, the store lines are typically led by fanboys clamoring to be first with the latest gadget. At the downtown San Francisco store for the iPad 2 debut, the gray market got there first.

Dennis Ng, 20, said he was being paid $10 an hour to arrive before 5 a.m. on the day Apple began selling the device at its stores. He said he was in a group of about 35 mostly Chinese immigrants at the front of the line, waiting to buy the iPad for somebody else. Resales of new electronics in countries where they’re not yet available feed the so-called gray market.

I saw that B'berg article too. There was another article which quoted a Russian dude having flown to NYC just for this.. I do not understand the economics behind this.. I understand the vanity part of it, that you are the first in Russia to have an iPad2, but the extra $2000.00 ( my estimate ) he spent on travel for the 2 iPads seems exhorbitant. I love the iPad 2 but not that much..Aren't we lucky to have it available in a store a few miles from us!!

iPad 2 at retail stores....

HA! This could be a comedy routine....

I ordered two yesterday at 7:30 am Pacific and got a ship date of 4/1.. SO, just as a piece of personal research, I went to two Wal-Marts, 2 Target store, 1 Best-Buy, 1 AT&T store and finally to the Apple retail store close to my place - NOTHING!!! EVERYTHING - GONE.. by Noon today (saturday)

There were some TRULY aggravated folks milling around the alleged retail spots....

What time would you have set, that would have somehow magically avoided a long line and fit in with your work schedule?
Oh I don't know maybe like inventory available during normal business hours. I thought Apple was different than Motorola, HTC, Guess not.
Maybe the concept of job first is Alien to you;)

You had to understand that made no sense as you were typing it. You're at work, so they shouldn't release it at 5, they should release it in business hours instead....when you'd be at work. Make up your damn mind. Or you could, y'know, just concede as there is no "good time" and people would queue whenever. ";)"

Saturday morning. :D
The line was not the issue.
Having to be at work while those who could afford to take the time off to line up early really sucked.
It's safe to say that "most" people don't work Saturday morning.

That is clearly the original iPad -- look closer, it isn't even dual core!

Not perfect, but it's dual-core. :D

EDIT: Did that in preview. Gotta love macs.

Awesome, so if Friday is a failure with people getting turned away even though "most" people couldn't even join the queue, Saturday plan would be, wow, just a brilliant plan.

Seriously people. I'm irritated I'm even having to spell this out. It had to be released some day, at some time. For everyone going "wah, Friday", there's someone else saying "great, that's my day off", and the story would be the same anywhen.

Just played with a 2 at the Apple Store. Great product. Not upgrading from my first gen, no point unless you're a facetimer, but very tempting for those without an iPad yet.

I think the title should read "for sale" not "on sale." iPads on sale during launch day would be quite the news story...
