Great mockup. Starting to imagine what this mite feel in hand... I mean, iPod touch thin?!

There will NEVER EVER EVER be an iPad Mini.

IF there is a New product that Apple markets, makes and sells,

to address a size somewhat bigger than the current generation 3.5" iPod Touch,

But "much smaller" than the iPad,

it will be the Next Generation iPod Touch !!!

.......Next

It was only a month ago people were saying that my Nexus 7 was a stupid size and 10" is the only good size for a tablet.

Now the very same people are saying they'll lay down money on an iPad mini.

Interesting world.

The two images that Daring Fireball thinks may be the same leak (or same hoax) are really very different from each other! One has sharp edges like a full iPad, and the other has rounded sides like the original iPhone.

And even thinner than the iPad 2 & 3? The smaller face would mean a much smaller battery already! Thinner than an already-thin device seems unreasonable to expect given the computing power in an iPad. Yes, that battery would be driving a less power-hungry screen, but otherwise probably similar chips to the iPad 3 (or at least 2) to drive the same apps and games. I don’t expect thinner; a bit lighter though.

I think Daring Fireball may be engaging in some wishful thinking with his speculation. That’s OK, I enjoy doing the same :)

Totally depends on the price point. My wife would be perfect for this, but if RT tablets really are $199 I'll have to consider them.

The same people? Who's that? Artie, of course, for one ;)

I STILL DON'T BELIEVE APPLE WOULD EVER RELEASE THIS!!
Here's why....Apple once said they were not scared of cannibalizing their pc sales with the iPad but I believe they are scared of cannibalizing their iPad sales!! iPhone is in a whole different league to do it but an iPad mini would kill off the bigger iPad!! Why buy a 600$ iPad when you can get the mini with a slightly smaller screen for a much lower price??
iPad is killing everything right now why mess with success??

Well because there are a lot of people who simply won't buy a $500 device, who might buy a $200-$250 device. Maybe Apple thinks they're approaching the point where all the people who can afford a 10" iPad have already bought them, and sales will start to slow? Sure, right now they're selling great, but I assume they have to be projecting into the future and doing the math.

If they can (just for example) sell 1.5X as many $200 devices while selling 1/2 as many $500 devices, they come out ahead. Let's say they were selling 10M $500 10" iPads over a certain time period. That's $5B in revenue. But if instead they could sell 5M 10" iPads ($2.5B) plus 15M $200 8" iPad Minis ($3B), they end up with $8B, a lot more total revenue. Not to mention bringing more people into the Apple ecosystem at the same time, and not ceding this large market to others who might prefer an Apple device but don't have the option.

It would have to be cheap if the Surface is going to be $199

If the mini isn't out for Christmas or priced right I'd probably buy my sons a Surface. I have an ipad2 and I can't find a reason to buy another tablet for myself.

There are plenty of laptops in different sizes. I don't see why not.

The name is not important

Yeah right !!

Ask Steve Jobs and ALL of Apple Corporate Kingdom

if a NAME is NOT IMPORTANT ?

It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

An iPod Touch is a different product than an iPad.
In every possible way, catering to a completely different market/customer.

Look how many different iPods they have. Look at the Mac mini.

Why buy a $600 iPad? Bigger screen and higher res. Plus maybe even some features that wouldnt be available on the iPad mini.

If it uses the same AX with matched GPU performance, has a retina display, and can also go up to 64GB just like it's big brother, I may consider going mini.

It's not going to have a Retina display. Would not make any sense to have a pixel density that high and would kill the advantages they're aiming for with this device: thinner, lighter, and cheaper, with good battery life. Retina display requires a much bigger battery, which kills those goals by necessitating a larger, heavier device, and the Retina displays are much more expensive to produce.

Unless you work for Apple you don't know anything. So stop acting you do.

The bezel appears to be too small. I don't want my thumb accidentally touching the display when I'm holding it by the side bezel.

How? Seems like having less inert grip area would make it tricker to hold.

The thinner bezel on the sides doesn't make sense to me. They compare it to the iPhone, but the iPhone you cradle your entire hand around. You can't do that with an iPad Mini size device. ...

I have a 7" tablet that's fairly heavy for its size (Blackberry Playbook) and on portrait it's very easy to hold it one hand without needing much room on the bezel. You thumb can cradle one edge and then almost wrap around the back to the other side. If this smaller iPad is indeed much lighter than my Playbook, it'll be a cinch to hold it one hand even with the thinner bezel.

As a father who's been forced to use a previously nearly abandoned Playbook due to other members of the family taking over my iPad, I, for one, welcome our new smaller and cheaper overload, all hail space an...I mean iPad Mini.

yeah i can guarantee it won't fill all of those criteria. the point is to be cost and size effective, not all out, just in a smaller box.

This could be my next phone.

I've always wanted a larger screen on the iPhone (as big as possible while fitting in my pocket), and I don't want a voice/SMS plan - just LTE data will do. Between iMessage, FaceTime over data, email and other communication apps if need be (Skype, etc.), there's really no need for a voice plan anymore. Save money. :D

if true this will replace my ipad 1... give me a 32 gig version at 300 and i'm there and a 64 gig at 400 and I'll def be there

Thing is, if it is as light as expected, you won't be holding it by the side, just gripping the bottom with your thumb/index or resting it in your hands.

Once the mini gets a retina display (which, I don't think it'll be out of the question for it to have it day one, but for obvious reasons it may not), I truly question how this will affect the sales of the larger iPad.

Most, if not all, of the features of a large iPad, except at $250, at the cost of a smaller screen? Sounds like a deal to me

"The lack of a bezel on the sides will make it easier to hold too."

Who knew? If that was really the case why does Apple use the bezel on all their iDevices at all? To look better?

Since Retina will probably be out of question, I'd guess it won't have A5X either, just A5 shared with the (new-ish) iPad 2, which should still be more than competitive. The 64GB version should be there, I'd think.
