Apple's iPad Mini: Thinner, Lighter and Narrower

Can't believe someone didn't post the "shut up and take my money" futurama pic yet.

Because that's soooo hilarious

If it doesn't have a retina screen, which I doubt it will, it will not kill off the bigger iPad. Sorry, but a smaller screen at a lower resolution won't appeal to many people. When you use a retina device, everything else seems meh.

If it has a better price tag it will appeal to more people no doubt!!

Why buy a 600$ iPad when you can get the mini with a slightly smaller screen for a much lower price??

Apple knows how to stagger their products, so I wouldn't worry about something like this. I imagine the smaller iPad would have a lower quality TN display rather than the larger iPads' IPS - you already see this with iPod Touch vs. iPhone. It also wouldn't be retina resolution. The latter reason would be more easily understandable by the masses, while more tech-oriented people would appreciate the difference between TN and IPS.

"The lack of a bezel on the sides will make it easier to hold too."

Who knew? If that was really the case why does Apple use the bezel on all their iDevices at all? To look better?

The ipad is heavier thats why it has the longer bezel

This will be as thin as the ipod touch & not as heavy as the ipad

No it's because you don't hold this lighter and smaller 8" iPad the same way you hold the 10" iPad.

While I don't think Apple will use a TN display for this when everyone else is using IPS for their 7" tablet, it'll actually make a lot of sense given a TN display will use less power than IPS and the viewing angle isn't as critical on a smaller display. But still I doubt they'll do it since the black level and colors will suffer with a TN display.

If a device is narrow enough, you can grip it completely using one hand. For example, the iPhone or iPod touch. Having a wider bezel would not make it easier to hold cuz you don't hold it that way.

So if making the bezel narrower allows an iPad mini to be grasped with one hand in a similar way, it helps. The iPad itself is much too wide to be held with one hand, so you rely on grasping the bezel.

oh wow, that does look kind of nice. perhaps i should've waited on my iPad 3 (which i havent touched since i've gotten it, anyways)

nah.

It was only a month ago people were saying that my Nexus 7 was a stupid size and 10" is the only good size for a tablet.

Now the very same people are saying they'll lay down money on an iPad mini.

Interesting world.

Is it the very same ppl or different ppl?

Once the mini gets a retina display (which, I don't think it'll be out of the question for it to have it day one, but for obvious reasons it may not), I truly question how this will affect the sales of the larger iPad.

Most, if not all, of the features of a large iPad, except at $250, at the cost of a smaller screen? Sounds like a deal to me

Easy Larger iPad
-They kill the home button
-add palm detection to the sensor system
-And make the screen almost full face on the same size device
-they then charge my credit card

Well because there are a lot of people who simply won't buy a $500 device, who might buy a $200-$250 device. Maybe Apple thinks they're approaching the point where all the people who can afford a 10" iPad have already bought them, and sales will start to slow? Sure, right now they're selling great, but I assume they have to be projecting into the future and doing the math.

If they can (just for example) sell 1.5X as many $200 devices while selling 1/2 as many $500 devices, they come out ahead. Let's say they were selling 10M $500 10" iPads over a certain time period. That's $5B in revenue. But if instead they could sell 5M 10" iPads ($2.5B) plus 15M $200 8" iPad Minis ($3B), they end up with $8B, a lot more total revenue. Not to mention bringing more people into the Apple ecosystem at the same time, and not ceding this large market to others who might prefer an Apple device but don't have the option.

Maybe if they see iPad sales starting to slow they would release it but right now it's the king of all tablets and doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon so why cannibalize now?? Also apple never gets in on smaller margins just to sell more!! They sell something because they believe it's what's right not just to fill in the need of a smaller iPad!!

Now THAT would be killer. I concur with the fourth point :p

Retina is the go-forward standard. Apple's not about to release new products with outdated hardware.

It'll drive up the cost to about $350 but people are more than happy to pay the Apple Tax.

It'll likely be slightly gimped; no LTE and no NFC are my guesses (assuming NFC is in the new phone.). I'm sure it'll support all other features like flyover and dictation; should have no trouble cramming a fully spec'd A(#) in there.

It'll do well because it'll appeal to people who want in on Apple stuff but are gun-shy about the price. $350-ish is high for a 7" tablet, but low for an Apple tablet. This will be Apple's ultimate gateway device.

They also need to fill a niche with it; no sense in releasing a new product for the sake of releasing a new product. My guess is it'll be positioned as a reading device.

All other tablet manufacturers are in a race to the bottom when it comes to pricing. Apple's never engaged in that and seems to be doing just fine.

If a 7" iPad does get announced (and I'm a long way from believing it will), it'll be retina, $350, wifi-only, and targetted at readers.

100% speculation
0% facts.

I'll be waiting for Apple to say there will be no mini iPad this year. I'll be surprised if they actually release an iPad mini cause to me all the evidence points to this not happening this year.

Not a bad article. It's nice to know which other websites believe in this and which are waiting for the facts.

Dang. Is this September 12 event gonna have the new iPhone, the iPad mini, AND the :apple:tv non-set-top thingy?
If battery life is good, then I'm sold.
Aside from the odd battery-draining bug, you can pretty much count on it. Apple likes to stress their long battery life.

In fact, in the smartphone area, it's a major selling point for the iPhone. Just take this quote from a story about a new compact charger from an Android news site:
As an Android user, we’re often forced to find creative ways of keeping our devices juiced up on-the-go.
:D

koobcamuk's premise is wrong to begin with. He's of course, trying to paint people as mindless buyer of the Apple brand but as a 7" tablet owner, I can definitely say that for my preference, 7" is too small for native tablet apps whereas this Apple tablet has a significantly larger display than 7". See this comparison shot from 9to5.

ipad-mini-nexus-7.jpg

Despite its diagonal length that begins with the number 7", this rumored iPad Mini has a display size that's roughly equivalent of an 8.2" Android tablet and isn't really a 7" tablet. However people keep clinging to that number 7 because of the significance. (As usual I find it ironic that people who want to criticize Apple buyers for not thinking for themselves cannot think a little deeper and see this obvious difference)

Not everyone buys something just because it's cheap. There are plenty of companies who make cheaper computer products than Apple.

People buy Apple because they want a quality product. If the so-called iPad Mini is a cheaper product in price but a lesser product in performance, then it won't appeal to everyone. It would have it's niche certainly, but it wouldn't replace the larger iPad.
