All the 7" tablets are like this. In vertical orientation, they can be held in one hand, cradled. Or in two hands much in the way you hold a smartphone for texting. The smaller side bezel is industry standard.

Why r we still talkin' bout this?

Because if the rumor is correct, the bezel on this smaller iPad will be far smaller than the one on current 7" tablets. This means despite having a larger display, the iPad Mini will be similarly as portable and (potentially) as light weight while having a display size that's more congruent with the tablet-optimized apps.

I guess the answer on whether MS will price the Surface at $199 will depend on 1 question.

How important is mobile to MS future? (smartphone and tablets)

Sure, Surface will be $199. And Win8 is what, $130? a+b=total

If a 7" iPad does get announced (and I'm a long way from believing it will), it'll be retina,
I think the only way it will be Retina is if they vastly increase the efficiency of the display, such as by using IZGO. The New iPad sacrificed weight for Display quality, I could see Apple doing the opposite for the smaller iPad to differentiate it from the larger version.

"The lack of a bezel on the sides will make it easier to hold too."

Who knew? If that was really the case why does Apple use the bezel on all their iDevices at all? To look better?

not to make it look better. apple is lazy...why do they have such a huge bezel on the mabook air 11 inch? they could fit a 12 inch or even 13 inch screen on that laptop. it is a shame... but then again what would be there selling point a few years from now...

People buy Apple because they want a quality product.

I think you're giving people a lot of credit.

I think most people buy Apple because they want to be Apple people.

That's not to say Apple's not a quality product; it is. But there are those who buy it for the quality, those who buy it because they prefer the OS, those who buy it because it integrates with the rest of their hardware, and then the remaining 70%* who buy it because it's fashionable.

*statistic made up on he spot.

Looks about the same to me as our Galaxy. But I haven't used calibrated calipers or anything.

While I don't think Apple will use a TN display for this when everyone else is using IPS for their 7" tablet, it'll actually make a lot of sense given a TN display will use less power than IPS and the viewing angle isn't as critical on a smaller display. But still I doubt they'll do it since the black level and colors will suffer with a TN display.

For all I know there might not even be a smaller iPad, but TN's been Apple's go-to display tech for their thin, value device category (iPod Touch, MacBook Air) so it would make sense. They don't seem bothered by the compromises in image quality and better tech (such as IGZO, if it's actually better in real world) tends to be introduced in higher-margin products first.

The quick mockup [below] shows what I believe are accurate proportions for the iPad mini compared to the 9.7-inch iPad and the current generation iPod touch 4.
Mockup
Get ready to see that mockup all over the front page in the coming months! Oh well, at least it wasn't that iPad mini mockup with the hands again.

A 7" ipad will be missing the rear cam and (IMHO) LTE and (potentially) NFC. That will take pressure off the battery, making screen efficiency less of an issue.

They can put a retina display in the iPhone, iTouch, and iPad. They can and will put one in this VaporPad. When it comes to Apple Mobile, retina is no longer a feature, it's a standard.

1. Needs a rear camera.

If you are positioning between the iPod Touch and iPad, with both having a rear camera for taking pictures and filming video, then a rear facing camera is a must considering this is the more portable of the iPads.

2. Needs either the IGZO screen or Retina...having neither is a step backwards.

No matter how important mobile is, the simple fact is that Microsoft cannot sell Surface at $199 and expect the current business model to be there. At $199 in a relatively small quantity, they'll be losing a good amount of money for every Surface sold.

More importantly, if Surface is $199 and Microsoft is losing money, how the heck are Microsoft's hardware partners are supposed to make money off their own hardware? If there's no hardware partner, how can Microsoft compete against much bigger volume hardware makers by themselves?

Losing money on XBox made sense only because there was a clear business model - you weather out the loss initially and make money through game sales later and that was an accepted practice in the industry like Sony already did. Surface is different - even if it's successful, Microsoft cannot make money off it since they said they'll even bundle the RT version of Office for free.

Microsoft has closer to $60 billion in worldwide cash reserve, but if Windows 8 is a flop Ballmer will be fired - finally.

I don't know... I'm not happy with the iPad mini. If people want more portability than the iPad they can buy an iPod Touch. Making an iPad mini is stoping the original iPad to get better. Developers will focus on the mini and the real iPad will be left on the dust. Everybody will have Mini fever and the rest of us will be like.. "ok why My iPad can't do that if mine's bigger and cost more? " Also it's going to be a nightmare for developers that spend hours to remake their apps retina display ready and now need to going back to regular resolution for the mini.

I truly hope this is not true at all. Apple is shooting it self with all this nonsense. The court battle, the genius ads, the ML updates just for a few and with no facebook as promised... I can hear Steve screaming from the ground.

Please God Please don't let Apple make a mini. It will be a mistake. Don't let them kill themselves like that

Display size different would be:

Galaxy 7 Display size: 15.08cm × 9.42cm = 142 cm^2 (Edit: D'oh, I was thinking Nexus 7)

iPad Mini at 7.85: 15.95cm × 11.96cm = 191 cm ^2

(rumored) Bezel difference:

If you think the iPod Touch can deliver the same user experience as a 7" tablet, you're smoking something.

I'm more curious about the pricing than anything else. We have to see where the mini hits between iPad and iPod Touch in pricing without invalidating iPod Touch.
it will NOT BE $200.00 Apple doesnt sell cheap devices. It will be $350.00 so people would scream full of hate asking why the iPad 2 cost 50 dollars more!!! And they will sell the mini anyway. People think Apple compete with prices but they are wrong. Apple compete with quality and brand. They don't care if you think is overpriced they will sell well bc they are an Apple device. The Power of branding.

I STILL DON'T BELIEVE APPLE WOULD EVER RELEASE THIS!!
Here's why....Apple once said they were not scared of cannibalizing their pc sales with the iPad but I believe they are scared of cannibalizing their iPad sales!! iPhone is in a whole different league to do it but an iPad mini would kill off the bigger iPad!! Why buy a 600$ iPad when you can get the mini with a slightly smaller screen for a much lower price??
iPad is killing everything right now why mess with success??

Apple cannibalized the iPod Classic with the mini and nano. They'll make it up on volume -- seriously large volumes.

If you think the iPod Touch can deliver the same user experience as a 7" tablet, you're smoking something.
(I of course agree with you, but)
If you think a 7.85" iPad could deliver the same user experience as a 9.7" iPad, are you also smoking something?

----

Well, so, this is it?
A 16:9 elongated iPhone, a too-small-iPad-too-big-device iPad mini, and the iPad?
That's the picture?

If you think the iPod Touch can deliver the same user experience as a 7" tablet, you're smoking something.

I tried a 7 inches. Believe me, its fun just for 5 mins then you start wishing for a bigger screen. In my house the Kindle Fire was great for a week. Now is resting somewhere in the house bc everyone is using the only iPad we owned.

Here is the interesting part of my comment: my wife tried the Kindle Fire, she ownes an iPhone 4s, she play with my iPad now and then BUT NEVER and I mean NEVER stop using her iPod touch. She loved it. Why? She love the form factor and portability even that it is like her iPhone.

I have facts. What do you have? The iPad mini will be a DOA device.

For everyone making the assumption that the device will not feature 3G/LTE:

Looks like the cutout we're used to seeing for data?

Personally I think they'd be crazy to only release wi-fi models. One of the big selling points of a smaller iPad will be portability. Along with portability comes connectivity on-the-go.

You know if you think aobu tit...the ipod touch and the iPad are the same device, just a diferent screen size.

So yo may consider the iPad a giant ipod touch, or the current ipod touch a small tablet
