If Apple pulls these remarkable technological feats off, they will own the entire market forever. I'm betting they can do it. iPad Mini will be the final nail in the coffin of all competitors who are trying to compete with iPad dominance.

I'm definitely not buying this "thin bezel at the sides" rumour. Think about the way you hold an iPad - your thumb is going to be constantly making phantom touches without a wider bezel.

I'd also be surprised if the iPad mini doesn't have a 16:9 aspect ratio, particularly since that's the way Apple is going in the iPhone.

One question I have is what will the battery life be like? If size and weight are primary concerns, there's little question that battery life has to suffer to some extent. What would people find acceptable, and enough for it not to be used against them by competitors? I would say it needs to get at least 7 hours to not be seen as a liability, and even that's a little sketchy.

This doesn't add much to the conversation, I know, but until I see this in person, I have no belief that it exists. The rumour mill has been churning for this since the original iPad arrived and its all a little boring now.

I guess there is room on the market for it, but I think I'm right in saying there has been little or no physical evidence of such a device.

Keep dreaming.:D

I guess it depends on use cases. The key feature of the iPad, I'm terms of battery life, is the excellent standby time. Most users won't be actively using their iPads all day long and, unlike phones, they won't be constantly using the network for receiving calls and texts. This is a device that you will have with you most of te time and use intermittently. Even five hours of active use would probably see most people through two or three days. Remember, we aren't normal!

If it doesn't have a retina screen, which I doubt it will, it will not kill off the bigger iPad. Sorry, but a smaller screen at a lower resolution won't appeal to many people. When you use a retina device, everything else seems meh.

Nobody actually cares about the Retina display except for geeks. The average user doesn't even understand it.

I wonder what is Apples plans with this. Will it be a substitute for those who can't/wont afford an iPad or will it be an entirely new market?

currently I don't see the point of this product, at least for those who own an ipad.

Thin or Fat?

I'm not a successful and professional iPad designer like Jonny Ive, but I think rather than making the new iPad 'thinner' it would be even better if it was 'fatter'.

The rational behind my view is this, I have 2 rooms in my house ( one for eating and sleeping in, and one for washing and more toilet related activities ), and if the new iPad was extremely fat, lets say 5 or 6 meters then it could simultaneously exist in both room A and room B at the same time.

If it had a screen on each end then I would effectively have 2 iPads, but for the price of one.

And imagine the battery life!!!!!

( by 'imagine the battery life' I mean it will have an extremely long battery life because of the extra room for the battery )

Medication time?

So you cant see someone with say an ipad 1 upgrading to this rather than the new ipad?? I can. I have the new ipad and love it but I think the minis size (assuming the thing exists) would be better

Finally a thinner bezel. That iPad 3 looks downright bloated and 80s in comparison. Now we just need an iPad mini with retina display... I'll check back in 2016.

The thinner bezel looks so good. If it works without people overlapping their fingers onto the screen they should totally add that to the next full-size iPad.

Based on what; its dimensions? As far as eReaders go, the Kindle is far superior if you're just looking to read books. The iPad Mini needs to compete on the things that actually matter to one specific activity, rather than being a multi-purpose platform like the original iPad.

The bezel appears to be too small. I don't want my thumb accidentally touching the display when I'm holding it by the side bezel.

One reason why I bought a Kindle even though I have an IPAD - can't read books without holding it like an idiot or put it down :)

iPod touch thin!? Holy crap...

If its truly that thin I might trade in my "New iPad" if I can manage to lose the retina

I'm pumped to see the announcement and will definitely be picking up a couple of these for longer distance family to FaceTime with.

$249 is key, I hope they hit that...

I wouldn't waste money on an Ipad mini.

If it does turn out to be as thin as the Ipod touch you can guarantee the 4th generation Ipad in March next year will be just as thin.

Personally it's not very Apple to release something middle market, mid range something Samsung, LG do. Then it will be Iphone mini's down the line and so on...

Nobody complaints about the Ipad dimensions only it's price. Pitch the Ipad 2 cheaper say £200 and it will sell lots. Plus it's thinner than an Ipad 3 so wouldn't put it past Apple to announce a budget Ipad 2.
