Wouldn’t it be „cheaper“ for them to just implement what they already came up with for the iPad Air 4 on the iPhone? The button already got bigger!

The solution on the iPad Air is cheaper, but not better.

In-display optical and ultrasonic fingerprint sensors have higher DPI. Not to mention much more ergonomic.

Qualcomm has a boatload of ultrasonic fingerprint sensor patents- which is likely why we won't be seeing that tech in the next iPhone

I can only imagine how negative the reception for Face ID would've been if it only launched in the new iPhones this fall. Thankfully it'd already been around a few years prior to now, but it's definitely made me miss Touch ID.

Another vote for adding touch ID to the home button. Having just upgraded a few weeks ago to the iPad Air 4, I can say I like it a lot and it works quite well. Why not just add that to the 13?

Would it be that hard to just have face id work with your mask on too?
i'm not claiming to be a scientist, maybe you are one, could you really get enough datapoints for an accurate id on simply the eyes? sounds a bit far fetched that it could work. The only time I need to unlock phone with mask on is inside grocery store when I am using notes for a shopping list. Pretty minor inconvenience to type my password a few times. I tried setting the time out longer and tapping the screen ever so often that works too. I guess I'm not willing to give up security for convenience. FaceID is so much better than finger print scanning, remember everyone who used to complain about wearing their gloves. LOL

a lot of touch buttons down there...camera, flashlight and now fingerprint....
i dont think it will come

I held on to my 11 Pro and glad I did. The 2021 iPhone looks be a nice upgrade over the 11 Pro. Love in display Touch ID on top of 3D Touch if that actually comes to fruition.

Mask or no mask, I still prefer TouchID.
Very true. I can think of many occasions where touch id is just more convenient and reliable than Face-ID. It's my first time with face id after upgrading from the 7 plus to the 12 pro max.

- general orientation of the phone. Face ID is picky with how the phone is oriented. Like if it's laying on my bed and i roll over to check it lol or it's on the desk, slightly oriented at an angle.

Interesting. The easy path would be to just use Qualcomm’s tech, with its licenses and fees irritating Apple to no end. Apple is obviously doing everything it can not to go down that path. Wasn’t there a rumor that Touch ID might only get implemented in the Chinese models? Granted, this was before COVID, so that has literally changed everything.

I sure hope this would not replace FaceID, that would be a step backwards. TouchID never really worked for me.
But why would we need both? because we can? because we have a pandemic that hopefully will be (mostly) over by the time this gets released?

If only my 6s+ could last another year, I would have waited for the 2021 iPhone. I am mostly happy with my 12 pro, just that I really wanted to experience a high refresh rate display, but it wasn't to be. After using FaceID for the last 3 months or so, I also wish there was touch ID too. FaceID is great but it tends to fail more than touch ID.
