Everyone on this board concerned for security, should not be happy with an optical sensor. If Apple goes for an optical reader, then security is not a big a concern as they would like everyone to believe it is for them.
Yes. Yes. And...eff yes!Apple should enable unlocking iPhone with Apple Watch, as they already allow for Mac. It’s unlocked, on your wrist, and hasn’t been removed. It’s secure.
The issue I see here is cases often cover the button.Wouldn’t it be „cheaper“ for them to just implement what they already came up with for the iPad Air 4 on the iPhone? The button already got bigger!

Yeah, no way they would put a biometric sensor that happens to be worse than Touch ID Gen 2.Optical sensors are junk. As stated in the article, too easy to fool.
I suspect if Apple does bring it back, it will be a newer generation ultrasonic reader.
Touch ID and Face ID have nothing to do with security. They are 100% about convenience. The only security the device has is the Passcode. These other features are all reductions on that security. Touch ID is already 50,000 x less secure than Face ID, which is already less secure than just a passcode.Everyone on this board concerned for security, should not be happy with an optical sensor. I don’t see why they wouldn’t use the iPad Air implementation of Touch ID in the power button.
I can only imagine the Apple Implementation on the display works anywhere on the surface. Meaning each UI Button could function as authenticator. WOW. That would really be impressive.Considering it's only the 3rd bio auth design to come out of Apple in 8 years, and is brand new, and is currently only implemented on one low-volume device? Yeah, I agree with that sentiment. Why develop such a thing for such limited use? They have bigger plans for it.
Depends, I now use the "wallet" in the Apple watch to pay for things. Anyplace that takes ApplePay can use the watch too, much easier tan even having to pull out the iPhone. As long as folks are wearing masks in stores and Apple's using FaceID only, people can't use ApplePay for purchases. I bet they're wishing they'd put fingerprint in earlier.
True but not every iPhone user needs a watch... sooooDepends, I now use the "wallet" in the Apple watch to pay for things. Anyplace that takes ApplePay can use the watch too, much easier tan even having to pull out the iPhone.
I would seriously doubt that they will go back to a physical button. They are trying to remove all ports and buttons....improves dust and liquid penetration and can therefor save the consumer money with less repairs. An under the screen fingerprint reader would be pretty cool but for right now I think it is more likely that they will put it in the power button like the iPad Air.
In the far future it would be really cool is to have the entire screen be a fingerprint reader so it didn't matter where you touched it. Then Apple could take things even further and have an optional security setting that blocks the phone from responding to any touch events if it is not coming from your finger. Then no one but you could interact with your phone. Obviously this wouldn't work for everyone in all situations but I could see it being useful in some cases.
I don't......I use the Apple watch instead...much easier...and it's part of the wonderful ecosystemI do miss Touch ID for Apple Pay use.
yeah, right, punching in the 16 digit alphanumerical code is so simple at the checkout and everyone in the line behind you understands that if you loose the connection to the reader, you simply start from scratch. All while the cheap SE or even a half a decade old iPhone just breezes thru. What do you mean "people cannot use ApplePay for purchases if wearing masks?" Of course you can. You just need to enter your phone passcode.
Masks are here to stayI sure hope this would not replace FaceID, that would be a step backwards. TouchID never really worked for me.
But why would we need both? because we can? because we have a pandemic that hopefully will be (mostly) over by the time this gets released?
hassle? Not really, pretty simple actuallyIn the age of masks. I REALLY miss touch id. Such a hassle right now.
