Everyone on this board concerned for security, should not be happy with an optical sensor. If Apple goes for an optical reader, then security is not a big a concern as they would like everyone to believe it is for them.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t use the iPad Air implementation of Touch ID in the power button. It’s actually pretty clever and would probably work better on the phones anyway. I’ve played around with unlocking scenarios with both hands with the 4 fingers I had registered to Touch ID (both indexes and thumbs) and they comfortably land on the power button other than my left thumb. Left thumb works nicely if the phone is upside down. Most people are right-handed anyway so it wouldn’t be a problem for most (I’m left-handed btw).

I prefer faceID over fingerprint, but I would take a notchless phone with in display fingerprint sensor over faceID. I would accept a phone with both if they managed to get rid of the notch. But if they give me a phone with both faceID and in display fingerprint reader, I think it would annoy me to have to deal with a notch when the phone is equipped with an alternative entry mechanism.

  1. I doubt Apple will do anything that has poor security, given how that was one of their supposed reasonings of going to FaceID (they said it was more secure than TouchID)
  2. Even if they did do optical and it had bad security, couldn't you just decide to only use FaceID, just like how you can choose to not use FaceID or TouchID now?

I don't think so they would add in screen Touch ID on iPhone 13, they would put it on the power button like iPad Air 4.

The in screen will come on iPhone 2022.

Optical sensors are junk. As stated in the article, too easy to fool.
I suspect if Apple does bring it back, it will be a newer generation ultrasonic reader.
Yeah, no way they would put a biometric sensor that happens to be worse than Touch ID Gen 2.

So then why the hell did they put time into developing Touch Id in the power button for iPad Air? That's a such a weird odd ball now (literally the 3rd iteration of bio auth to come out of Apple in 8 years, and the only done in such a small and limited distribution)...and even more of an oddball if its superseded a year later by in-display touch id.

Touch ID and Face ID have nothing to do with security. They are 100% about convenience. The only security the device has is the Passcode. These other features are all reductions on that security. Touch ID is already 50,000 x less secure than Face ID, which is already less secure than just a passcode.

So whatever gripe you think you have about optical sensors, I'm willing to bet Apple's implementation will degrade security in a way considered generally acceptable.

Considering it's only the 3rd bio auth design to come out of Apple in 8 years, and is brand new, and is currently only implemented on one low-volume device? Yeah, I agree with that sentiment. Why develop such a thing for such limited use? They have bigger plans for it.

I can only imagine the Apple Implementation on the display works anywhere on the surface. Meaning each UI Button could function as authenticator. WOW. That would really be impressive.
The BUY Button would have a fingerprint icon on its label. It only activates when it is your finger.

I dont think they will even provide a 128GB iPhone Pro Option.

They will bump the price to $1099 and starting at 256GB. If you want Touch ID you will now have to go with the Pro.
So this isn't really a price increase per model. As the 256GB iPhone 12 Pro had the same price. I was actually suspired they didn't bump the price this year considering they had 5G and mmWave. I guess it was mostly due to pandemic's uncertainty.

Pro Motion, Touch ID, Qualcomm X60 on Samsung Foundry?

And I guess iPhone 13 stays the same with $799. A15, WiFi 6E, Smaller Notch, New Camera with Sensor Shift.

Of coz I hope I am wrong and Touch ID is across the whole iPhone 13 product range.

As long as folks are wearing masks in stores and Apple's using FaceID only, people can't use ApplePay for purchases. I bet they're wishing they'd put fingerprint in earlier.
Depends, I now use the "wallet" in the Apple watch to pay for things. Anyplace that takes ApplePay can use the watch too, much easier tan even having to pull out the iPhone.

An under the screen fingerprint reader would be pretty cool but for right now I think it is more likely that they will put it in the power button like the iPad Air.

In the far future it would be really cool is to have the entire screen be a fingerprint reader so it didn't matter where you touched it. Then Apple could take things even further and have an optional security setting that blocks the phone from responding to any touch events if it is not coming from your finger. Then no one but you could interact with your phone. Obviously this wouldn't work for everyone in all situations but I could see it being useful in some cases.
I would seriously doubt that they will go back to a physical button. They are trying to remove all ports and buttons....improves dust and liquid penetration and can therefor save the consumer money with less repairs.

I’d love to see a reliable under display fingerprint sensor instead of annoying face ID.
There are MANY occasions that Face ID fails, and as someone who used their phone heavily,I’m dealing with it on daily basis.

What do you mean "people cannot use ApplePay for purchases if wearing masks?" Of course you can. You just need to enter your phone passcode.
yeah, right, punching in the 16 digit alphanumerical code is so simple at the checkout and everyone in the line behind you understands that if you loose the connection to the reader, you simply start from scratch. All while the cheap SE or even a half a decade old iPhone just breezes thru.

I sure hope this would not replace FaceID, that would be a step backwards. TouchID never really worked for me.
But why would we need both? because we can? because we have a pandemic that hopefully will be (mostly) over by the time this gets released?
Masks are here to stay
