If true this would probably mean that the October 14 availability date that has been floating around is probably about right.

Lots of people have been saying they will be dissapointed if the next iPhone is only a minor upgrade but I think the iP4 is a beautiful phone. I'll be upgrading from the slightly tired-looking 3GS, so whether it's a minor update or a completely new model I don't care. I'd honestly probably preorder the next iPhone if it was a piece of steaming horse s*** glued to a retina display.

As long as it still had iOS 5 on it :D

EDIT: I understand people not wanting to get a minor update on a 24 month contact, I'm in Australia though so I'm on a very rare 12 month contract and plan on getting the same for the new iPhone.

I thought the rumors were saying October 5th, due to iOS 5, iPhone 5.. Would make more sense than October 4th, but a day earlier is fine with me! Just wish the event was on September 28th :(

Wow, the iPhone 5 sure got delayed this year! I wonder what the hell went wrong?!?!

(awaits people saying it was never delayed because techincally it was never announced, kid yourselves not folks, if they could have safely released it when they did the previous 4 times, they would.)

As if you'd know.... Don't kid yourself.

This will indeed be a very special Keynote. This Keynote will usher in a new era for Apple, without Steve Jobs. Although i believe Apple will be fine without him, I believe that if Tim Cook does a lousy job and if we end up with only an iPhone 4S, then it'll be a major disappointment.

October 4th makes sens, but i was thinking the 5th. Well guys, looks like 1 more week until invitations are handed out! We'll be right one day ;)

Except Apple is not quite without Steve Jobs, since Jobs is now Chairman of the Apple Board of Directors.

iPhone 3G stands for 3G network
iPhone 3GS stands for 3G network + speed
iPhone 4 stands for 4th generation iPhone
iPhone 4S stands for...nonsense

The next iPhone no matter the name id going to be the iPhone 5! as in 5th, they can name it iPhone hyperscreen or whatever but IS going to be the 5!!!

There will be...
iPhone 4E (E for Economy = cheaper model of the current iPhone 4)
AND
iPhone 5

The event will be good, not epic. The new phone will have some great features, but of course folks will still have some posts up saying what more they wish it had. I think there will be two phones.
They will also announce when Icloud will go public, probably some Ipod news, and who knows what else. They hype always is better than the actual event, although I do always look forward to the events.

Until I see an ACTUAL Event Date I don't buy it. At this point Oct. 4 is still speculation. Granted, it's a bit more solid than anything we've had since they announced the device would be delayed, but I'm not holding my breath until an official announcement.

Finally comes real date but again from an unknown source.
Now lets wait for the invites to reach by 24th if the date is true. :)

Regardless of how large the update is, I think it will be called the iPhone 5 just because they now have the iOS and phone generation number the same.

I will give you my take, the iPhone 5 will be same form factor, it will not do anything different than a 4 with iOS5 installed, it will perform better because of A5 chip and some additional memory.

Analysts will declare it a failure.

Fanboys will weep in dispare and tell everyone they are buying an Android.

The iPhone 5 will sell more units at a greater margin than any device ever making it the most profitable device ever made and sold by any company in the history of mankind.

We all knew it was coming......my only hope is that apple has been producing 5's since July and can keep up with demand (not gonna happen but we can dream)

Apple should only have to produce 4 flavours of iphone 5. look at ipad 2 there are 12.

So now we have a reliable but unofficial announcement of the upcoming release of invites to an upcoming announcement of the upcoming release of a product.

To which everyone collectively sighs a breath of relief that things are now "clarified" :p

@bigjnyc, you have no earthly idea how much life stuck on a 3G has sucked recently. lol.

I do. My 4 got stolen in Mexico in June... or as I prefer to think about it, it's still on vacation. So I am on a 3G with scratched screen, and horribly slow. Takes 7 minutes for Facebook app to open!

Is anyone else tired of the semantics arguments about the name of the device?

No matter what it ends up being called, no matter how big of an update it is... NO MATTER WHAT it is still an iPhone 5... If it ends up being called the 4S it is still the iPhone 5... Because next year they would name it the iPhone 6 as it is the 6th generation.

There is no hidden meaning when they call it the iPhone 5 event.. It doesn't confirm or deny a redesign. It means NOTHING.

The only way the name iPhone 5 means ANYTHING is if they are releasing two models...

I'm expecting an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 5.

S for speed on the 4S as it will have an A5 processor, but it will have an iPod Touch retina screen and other cheaper options such as 8GB storage to bring the cost right down. Many people choose Android because it is a cheaper option, the 4S could change that.

The 5 will probably fit those leaked case designs. So a bigger screen. There may be NFC in there. There has been rumours about how light the 5 is. Maybe they have gone for some form of carbon fibre shell? CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) bodywork is on the future BMW i3 and i8, maybe there will be an iPhone using the same tech.

That photoshop looks terrible.

I hope it is sooner than that date, but I don't mind it being that date :p

There were some rumors months ago, stating issues with the A5 chip overheating in the smaller iPhone enclosure.

I'm just hoping and praying that the delay in the release will mean many more quantities of the iPhone at the initial release. I don't have the luxury of standing in line the night before and I've been w/out my iPhone 3GS for months because of jumping into the pool after my 3 year old son who decided that he wanted to do a cannonball without his arm floats on.

Anybody else see a pattern here? The event is always a few weeks away, you know like tomorrow which never comes. Really what have they got to show? A minor update to the nano a minor update to the touch and a minor update to the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 is, I suspect not ready to ship and Tim Cooke is having a major case of stage fright. This could be the first event to be booed.

Wait.....Announced the device would be delayed? What device? According to Apple at this point, there is no device.

And yet another Wednesday rolls by where we are told 'The invites will come next week'.

I for one am getting sick of this constant wait and I'd say that it's about time that something, anything, was announced, but we're way beyond that point in time now.

Apple, you really need to release the new iPhone, seen here metaphorically as a railing, ASAP to catch the people, like me, who are inevitably going to jump ship.

AllThingsD reports that Apple will be holding its highly-anticipated iPhone 5 media event on October 4th.According to the report, new Apple CEO Tim Cook should play a prominent role in the event in order to assert himself as the new leader of the company, although it will almost certainly be a team presentation with other executives such as Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall, and Eddy Cue leading portions of the event. It is unclear whether Steve Jobs will make an appearance at the event, with the report suggesting that a decision on whether or not he appears would be a last-minute one based on his health.

This takes a lot of pressure off me. For several years, only good taste has held me back from yielding to the overwhelming desire to remark how "thin and light" Steve looked at the keynote. Sadly, I may be able to relax now. :(
