Everyone was hoping to read "press invites handed out today" meaning the event is in a week.

People shouldn't hold out for a "smooth" launch. However, it will launch. There is always plenty of correction and updating going on in the first months after the release of new tech.

:apple: had better have some Aces up their sleeve... b/c the reports that have leaked indicate that the phone will be sleek and have more features via iOS 5.0, but we need some serious innovation in this phone... its taken about 1.5 years to release it

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Or they had origionally planned a fall release because the iPhone 4 came to Verizon this year

Release

Now the question is, is it better to reserve one at your carrier's store, or an :apple: store..

but really, i've never participated in an iPhone launch before.

Is this what MacRumors has come to ?

Can people no longer identify when a poster is being jokingly irreverent without them seemingly forced into using a ;) at the end of their post ? ;)

Well I would agree with you, but a couple of people at CultOfMac thought that it was an actual picture and were having a hissyfit about how it looked. People are stupid, given not all of them, but I was just wondering and thought it best to ask.

It would be an historic keynote indeed! The last Steve keynote was for the iPad2. It would be nice to see him a few minutes in this keynote but I think it would be better for him to concentrate in health and family.

If SJ makes an appearance, it'll just be a cameo. But I doubt he'll be there at all. Now that's he's passed the reins to Cook, Apple doesn't want to give the impression that they can't pull off a great keynote without SJ.

As much as I love Apple. The sad thing is, that even with just a spec bump here, everyone will still line up to buy the device. Wondering if Apple will give a reason for the delay, or carry on like usual.

Why set yourself up for assured disappointment? I think we all know what this phone will have -- faster proc, maybe slightly better camera, perhaps wider screen, but at same resolution as iPhone 4. Not a bad upgrade, but not the steroid laced model you have built up in your mind.

You assume that most people know of Tim Cook's sexuality. In fact until you posted that remark I imagine the reality is that most did not and frankly have no reason to care either way what the sexuality of Tim Cook is.

Not everything jokingly posted on a forum by people is a hate crime, sometimes they are just innocent jokes - albeit funny or not.

Yep, noted.

Is anyone else tired of the semantics arguments about the name of the device?

No matter what it ends up being called, no matter how big of an update it is... NO MATTER WHAT it is still an iPhone 5... If it ends up being called the 4S it is still the iPhone 5... Because next year they would name it the iPhone 6 as it is the 6th generation.

There is no hidden meaning when they call it the iPhone 5 event.. It doesn't confirm or deny a redesign. It means NOTHING.

The only way the name iPhone 5 means ANYTHING is if they are releasing two models...

I think at this point, the titles are references to the extent of improvement/redesign.

Presumably, an "iPhone 4S" is only a minor improvement, such as faster processor and/or improved camera. Nothing to get too excited about, especially if you already have an iPhone 4.

Presumably, an "iPhone 5" is a significant leap, with features like a larger screen, faster processor, better camera, thinner/redesigned body, faster networking, better battery life, etc.

Of course only Tim Cook, Steve Jobs, and about 30 other people real know at this point. But this is why people say things like, "If it's only an iPhone 4S, I won't be upgrading". A bit of speculation, but informed speculation. :D

He'll be on FaceTime, lying in his hammock on the Bahamas.

Personally, I am also excited to see them cover heretofore unrevealed iOS 5 features.

Hors d'oeuvre: Sales figures, maybe new iPods?
Appetizer: iCloud launch
Salad: iPhone 4S
Entree: iPhone 5
Dessert: "Assistant", Maps, or other vastly improved iOS 5 feature!

I can dream. :)

Steve is still the chairman of Apple and the most senior employee I am sure that he will be up on stage for the event, I expect he will present the keynote but most likely delegate to other executives the presentation more than he has done so previously

Point being, we had gen 1 (2G), gen 2 (3G), gen 3 (3GS) and finally gen 4, the 4. If the "4S" is just like the 3GS, the one after would logically be the 6. So it indeed does not matter what this phone is called, we all know which number it falls in line. It's the fifth one.

If I have a friend named Jack, he may be Jack, but he's still my friend when referenced in conversation with those who don't know him. Right? So the point is then, that if I'm discussing the iPhone 5, and it's called the 4S, I can say, "The fifth gen iPhone, the 4S" just as I'd say, "My friend, Jack."

Fin.

Indeed (and hoping) its true, the Yerba Buena Center Theater doesn't seem to have anything scheduled on 10/4/11 yet, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

Here's YBCA's 10/4/11 Calendar:

Apple held their last Fall announcement there on September 1, 2010

Here's the layout of the venue:

Last but not least, a list of their recent client list:

Sadly, a current Search at YBCA's website finds NO Apple events:

Hear, hear!

It'll be in Cupertino.

It's possible. Heck, they might not have an event at all. What better way to control costs than to skip the event and just send out a press release with some videos posted on the site.

They could send it as early as 10am Cupe time today. Post the videos overnight tonight. iPods shipping to stores by Friday. iOS 5 and iCloud launching next week. iPhones a week from Friday, no reservations, no preorders just like the iPad 2 (hope not, that was a total mess)

Just because they had events before doesn't mean that Cook's Apple has to keep that up. And they might not
