That is the question of the moment? I have no clue and I wish I did so I could get this over with already.

I have a sneaking suspicion it's on purpose as a way to "tranquilize" the servers and keep people from jumping around like crazy...it's prob all part of Apple's "genius" .... but as for me...I'll quote Kurt Douglas..."it's a GD strange kinda love"...in the Snowy River

No rhyme or reason, just give it some time. I placed 2 orders and my 2nd order was processed before my first.

1st order - Placed at 3:11am, processed at 6:24am
2nd order - Placed at 3:14am, processed at 5:24am

upgrade eligiblity status

You can't cancel phone orders online. I wanted to do that as well. Your eligibility for upgrade changed automatically after your order was placed, so even if you could cancel, you may have a problem with upgrading. I think that's the whole reason.

Your theory is very good and makes alot of sense. BTW my order was actually through the ios Apple Store App

I just don't understand if they can "flag" your eligibility within seconds, I don't see whey they can't "unflag" you in at least 15 minutes...I mean come on this is ridiculous.

This is the time when the WHOLE WORLD needs a collective drink..or 2 or 3

Does anyone know when they actually withdraw the funds for preorders? I will not have the available funds until the 20th...I'm hoping it won't be before then...

At the moment my order is still processing (for delivery on the 21st)...

The funds are typically taken out just prior to shipment. Typically it has been 3-4 days prior to the arrival date. You have a few days to get the funds together.

i stayed up Eastern time. 3 am. And easily ordered all 5 for my Family Dad, Brother, Sis, Sis-in-law, and myself in 26 minutes!!! I had a little issue with lag during my first order and it kicked me out once, but other than that it was an extremely smooth experience for me on the Apple site. Couldn't be happier. Sold my 4 one week ago and have been using an Android since then. Ahhh for the familiarity of my iOS once more.....

Apple announces iPhone at keynote.
Apple shortly after opens up pre-order for iPhone.
So much demand for iPhone that shipping date slips back to weeks or a month.
When iPhone demand has eased off shipping dates improve.

This happens every iPhone launch. This is NOT news or a rumour. This is just page hit whoring. This website is about "news and rumours you care about"? Well I don't care for this non-rumour attempt at page hit whoring.

No THIS doesn't happen every launch. No Apple product that has been available for pre-order has sold out in just over an hour in the wee hours of the morning. The previous quickest iPhone sell out was a little under 24hrs. A LOT of people are waking up this AM saying WTF! Yeah, that is newsworthy.

There is no way they got more orders for the 5 then they did for the 4 for pre-order in the first hour! If you believe that your on some serious Apple Koolaid!

This is Apple creating the illusion that its super popular, and demand outweighs the supply. Meaning that they all sold out in the first hour means they limited the stocks to create this. Kudos to Tim Cook, he is a sales guy.

Personally I think its a stupid move, This phone is now where ahead of the competition like the iphone 4 was, this old strategy will result in people who are on the fence jumping to another product. Apple got it right with the Ipad by providing sufficient supply at launch, if we are moving back to Chinese scalpers snapping up phones.....fark that! I am seriously tired of seeing scalpers outside apple stores buying all the allocation everyday to send overseas and denying actual customers form whom the product was intended for.

This is the first time since the original Iphone that I am serious considering cancelling my pre-order. I'll pop into an Apple store next week, and see what it does for me, but its just lacking the wow factor, and now with this Supply games... seriously contemplating saying stuff it. And I am a huge Apple fan, with every iphone they launched and over a dozen apple products at home at the moment.

Based on what? Every launch has sold more then the one before and you think this one is different?

"Apple creating the illusion that the iPhone is popular" What the hell.. Get out more.

At what stage of the order were you allowed to change the shipping address? I'm currently still in the ordered phase and not processing yet, do I need to be in processing? Currently it's not allowing me and says to try again later, I'm assuming because of the heavy traffic. Any ideas?

I placed my order at 3:08am EST, but didn't get to change the address until about 5:30am EST. I guess give it a couple hours?

EDIT: It should probably be in processing, if yours isn't you won't be able to yet. I'll stick with the 2-3 hour window or so.

My PR pal says the best thing to do after your new product gets made fun of by the world is to switch to "sold out" in one hour.
Then that gets headlines, the masses notice,
joke stories stop, money rolls in.
I'm sure that's untrue in this case.

Starbucks was made for times like these

Remember Tim Cook gushing over himself talking about how "Apple Stores were made for big launches like iPad and iPhone"
...all of which seem to be growing exponentially btw..Kuddos to Steve Jobs for creating a retail tsunami machine : )

Well, I think Starbucks Anniversary Blend (or take your pic) was made for crazy times like this :apple:

Doing not too well in Australia & Singapore

Still have white ones to be delivered on 21/09 in Australia and Singapore. It doesn't seem like this iPhone is doing well. It has been more than 4 hours since the preordering started.

"Apple is doomed because new iPhone is the same as old iPhone".......

First batch sells out in one hour in the middle of the night.

Lets be absolutely honest here, it would have been pretty shocking if it didn't sell out that quick. Even if it was a 4SS it would have sold that quickly.

I'm just saying, it doesn't mean very much. It could sell less than the 4S for all we know (I doubt that though).

Woke up at 5:30 EDT. Ordered anyway without bitching and complaining. I'll have it on Oct 5th. No biggie.

I hope apple stock jumps. $700 here we come.

Doesn't work with a closely followed product like the iPhone b/c their are too many analysts that will expose whether it was due to actual demand or production issues or intentionally holding back product.

I just ordered one for me and one for my wife through AT&T's website at 7:05 EDT, in order to avoid the 2 week shipping problem. My receipt (order summary) says "Your iPhone has been reserved and should arrive as soon as Sept 21, 2012." Okay... "AS SOON AS?!?"

So, now I'm feeling kind of sick to my stomach. Maybe I should have just ordered through Apple and lived with the 2 week shipping date?? Anyone have any experience ordering from AT&T in the past? I've always ordered from Apple and I've always been pretty satisfied. Now, I'm disturbed about a number of things. No engraving from AT&T, no estimated ship date, no option to purchase the AppleCare warranty. I'm going to have a lot of things to check out when (or if) I receive these phones!

It sucks how my own impatience got the best of me here! And it also sucks that I couldn't stay up until 3:00 am!!!!

Maybe this will be just like the Retina MBP where it said 2-3 weeks to ship but shipped in one. Like someone else said this could just be a PR stunt. It's creating buzz and will get more press as the day goes on.

iPhone 32gb in Black in the UK has now slipped to 2-3 weeks! Guess we know which one is in higher demand!

Yeah, Apple wont make hundreds of millions from this iPhone at all, because it isnt selling well in Australia

Why would it have been pretty shocking? It sold out in less than one TWENTIETH of the time it took the 4S to sell out. You don't think that's shocking?!

Stayed in bed

When the alarm on my iPhone went off at 2:10, I hit snooze. At 2:19 minutes later, I hit snooze again. Ah, I don't want to get up.

So I went to the Apple Store App on my iPhone. Needed updating. OK. 2:20

Opened the app. Placed the order. Done by 2:24, delivery for 9/21. Didn't even have to get out of bed, and my sweet wife stayed asleep through it all.

The hardest part was entering in my AppleID with sleepy eyes :)

Why does AT&T say 'Without Visual Voicemail' on the confirmation? I thought it was a feature of the iPhone?

They are already throttling features? BOO!!! :-(

I was confused by that too. My order had one line for "...without Visual Voicemail," and another that just said "Unlimited Data LTE for iPhone." Each had a line item value of $30. Very odd, indeed. I'm going to check what it means later today. I can't believe they'd strip that out, but if that is the case I'll strip my acct from them.

Same here. I need to have it shipped to my office because
no one is home during the day. Crap, I forgot to add AppleCare+. Can I add that to the order once it's out of "we've received your order" status?

I placed my order at 3:08am EST, but didn't get to change the address until about 5:30am EST. I guess give it a couple hours?

While the carrier's language is very non-committal about launch delivery, hopefully they are accurate. I find it hard to believe it sold out that fast or that Apple has little stock ready. I wouldn't be surprised if they have allocated much more online pre-order stock to the individual carriers, especially given the very carrier specific model variances.

I places two orders a little before 6AM ET, and both said something about 9/21 delivery. Don't remember the exact wording. Hoping they come on launch, but if not, oh well. Crazy town, this.
