wow! and some folks think they were gonna casually get up at 6:00am and get their order in for the 21st....

Yep, that's what I did. Live and learn. I ended up ordering direct through AT&T, but have no indication on a ship date. :(

Edit: from my confirmation email: "Your iPhone is reserved and should arrive as soon as Sept 21, 2012"

So, maybe I'll have it next Friday; maybe I won't.

I just ordered one for me and one for my wife through AT&T's website at 7:05 EDT, in order to avoid the 2 week shipping problem. My receipt (order summary) says "Your iPhone has been reserved and should arrive as soon as Sept 21, 2012." Okay... "AS SOON AS?!?"

So that was on your final "Order Confirmation" page online or in the confirmation email?

I'm trying to figure out whats going on at ATT b/c I ordered around 5:00a eastern and my final summary page online said it would be delivered on 9/21. But then I rec'd the email and there was no delivery time frame at all, or when you look up the order online.

Now I see people saying they are getting "as soon as" messages even though if you go through the order motions right now ATT still claims "Your iPhone 5 xxGB will Arrive on 9/21/12." So just wondering if ATT even knows their own story here.

Yep, when I mentioned in my post last week about how crucial it is to get in early most everyone bashed the comment. Now they're seeing it's true.

I woke up at 2:50am but didn't get an order through until 6:15am. Those who have premier accounts and were trying to add a new line were stuck until around that time when they finally got it working.

I'm guessing, rather hoping, that AT&T still has stock due to their systems being down for adding a new line. I don't know if that was a problem only with business/fan/premier accounts or if it was with anyone trying to add a new line to familytalk, but I'm hoping they just had stock left.

I'm thinking people automatically go to Apple.com instead of trying through AT&T as well forcing apple to run out before the carriers. I don't know. This is all wishful thinking.

Finally Made a Good Decision

I woke up at 2:55am est and went right to the Verizon site. Ordered 2 32GB phones and got a delivery date on release day. No issues at all.

I went to the Apple site afterward and could not get through to the store. When the 4 came out, I foolishly only tried the Apple site and it took me hours....

my order confirmation email from At& T says:

Great news – your new iPhone will ship soon!
What happens next:

Your order will arrive on 9/21/12
We’ll send a confirmation email when it’s ready

My order was placed at 4.10 EST.

FWIW while I was placing my order, I had moved my iPhone to the cart, but had not added AppleCare. The option at the bottom had disappeared, so I clicked "edit device" to see if that option would reappear. When I did that, that screen showed that the iPhone 5 would be delivered on 9/21 (interestingly enough, it shows the 4 and the 4S as being delivered in eight business days). This was in contrast to the opening page that had read "Ships in two weeks". So I'm thinking that Apple is just hedging their bets, and that all these preorders really well be delivered by 9/21.

I've got a screenshot of what I saw, but don't know how to insert it here.

I did the same.. woke up just before 3 EST and pulled up both AT&T and Apples site. I noticed that AT&T had the pre-order button available before Apples store came back online. I tried to process my order through AT&T and got stuck on the check to see if i'm eligible for an upgrade screen. Then it timed out and told me to try again later.

I tried Apples site and everything was quick until I got to the last option to check out. Kept coming up with a blank page. Then instead of refreshing thinking something went wrong I just left it and sure enough it came up and everything else went fine. I'm glad I stayed up like everyone else. Just hoping I get it before the end of the day next Friday.

When does AT&T ever know their own story? As long as they ship one phone on 9/21/12 they can truthfully tell everyone that phones shipped "as soon as" then even if you don't get yours until the 5S is out. :D

I woke up at 3:00am EDT and placed an on-contract order through the iPhone app that will deliver next Friday. Since I really wanted a no-commitment one, I slept on it and this morning pre-ordered one from AT&T. Since Apple processed my order, the only option I had from AT&T was no-commitment, so I place a pre-order. Hopefully it arrives before my 30 day return period on the contract phone is up. If so, I'll return that one to go back off contract, keep the no-commitment version, and request an unlock. AT&T actually works OK in my office, but I want to give T-Mobile a try at some point in the coming year when they are done re-farming their HSPA+ network.

Well now I guess I can't order from Apple.

I've been on AT&T's website for about a half hour now. Finally had their 'Add to Cart' button work correctly! First it would just jump to the iPhone specs page and wait. Now I need to have the iPhone shipped to my apartment address, but of course AT&T won't let me change the billing address associated with the account (I'm still on the family plan with my parents).

So now I'm waiting for their 'Chat' feature to work, but I'm still waiting. :( Shipping to my parents address, okay that's fine I guess if I have to. But billing! I want to use my own card, and it pre-fills in their name and won't let me change it.

Edit: Even if it looks like you can change the Credit Card holder's Name, it's a lie. It will come back with a Credit Card Validation error. Speaking to the AT&T Chat rep (which took 40 min) said their online system just can't do it.

To make matters worse the time out on their site is terrible. I waited and tried to checkout again, and it lost all my information. :(

Two weeks, eh? Perhaps Apple doesn't want to take too much revenue out of Q1 with this pre-October launch...

Sell a few iPhones in Sept to offset the natual decline from those waiting to upgrade. But hold the rest so the Holiday quarter doesn't feel too much of an impact.

I'm at my local AT&T store in Indiana and there is absolutely no one waiting outside. Is that a good thing or bad thing? Opens in 14 mins. (Because I couldn't get apple or AT&T sites to work)

The iPhone 5 is a disappointment they said....

Not many people will want it they said....

According to some reports this shortage is actually to do with a lack of supply of the new screens?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/9543061/Buyers-face-Apple-iPhone-5-shipping-delays.html

"It follows claims that Apple faced a shortage of new, taller screens for the iPhone 5 because of slow production at Sharp, one of its major suppliers. The Wall Street Jounal said Sharp had only just begun shipping screens to Apple's Chinese assembly lines earlier this week after difficulties at a key LCD plant."

But im sure its also fueled by insane demand :D

My CC hasnt been charged by my phone company yet, hope they havent had problems

DARN IT. I went to the store at 3:30 AM EST and it wasn't working. Got up at 7:30 ... 2 weeks =(.

Sigh now I've reserved it at Rogers, but I'm number 695 for the 64 Gb Black.

Expect people to start lining up at least 12 hours before.

It really sucks having to do this too, but some times that's the only way to guarantee a new iPhone if you want it on day 1. Otherwise it's anyones guess when you'll be able to actually get one. However for those that do miss out this morning, putting your name on a list at your carrier tends to be your best option. At least then you're guaranteed, and you don't have to guess they call you when it's available.

I was lucky enough to preorder at 3:08am EST with delivery set for next Friday. Does anyone know what shipping carrier Apple uses or will use for delivery? Also, I have heard that the phones have arrived before launch day when preordering online for delivery at home. Is this true?

IPhone 5 will be available at at&t stores on 21st,not today.

My Zagg invisible shield shipped today - I'll have it before my phone arrives. I'll be interested to see how well they've measured and cut for a phone that isn't yet available.
