I went through Verizon's page and had two dumb phone lines that in using to upgrade. Any idea why price went from $199 to $229 when I selected 16GB for the upgrade?

From ATT to Verizon

The irony for me is, that after placing an order I had to call verizon to confirm for some reason. During the phone call I had to access my email for an order number (still on ATT until the 21st). A feat that is not possible on Verizon's service.

Was that through AT&T or Verizon? I have never ordered through through AT&T before directly. Always got my phones via Apple directly.

From AT&T's website. I've never had this much trouble ordering in the past though. This morning after 3 hours I gave up and went to bed. Then at 6:30 i went to AT&T's website and it worked. Managed to upgrade 6 of our lines :) All but 1 show Processing..

The public will likely never know the true story on the supply. Apple is first and foremost a marketing based company. They absolutely are looking to create the right blend of demand/scarcity to entice the consumers and spark media attention. If that means throttling numbers via their online ordering systems and those of partners (telecom carriers, Best Buy, etc.) in order to drive up the hype and create nice lines at stores that the media love to shoot video of, then they'll do it. Or, it could be that they are processing as many as they can, given subcomponent supplies.

One shouldn't assume it's one or the other. Apple will do what's right for Apple FIRST. You and I are further down the list, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're intentionally holding back on this one.

Why would they then allow for the 2012 iPad to be available all the time to the point that people claimed it was selling poorly, and yet it was selling great.
It can't be both.
The truth is that they are not shorting, but we don't know what was the availability. But i doubt it was lower than the 4S.
Also, the 4S and the 4 don't have all that much in common on the inside to be making claims that it was easier to produce them.

I've given up. I got my line upgraded, but when I went to add a new phone, it punts me to the premier site and then when I click on iPhone 5, it tells me there are no data plans available for this device.

I tried Apple, and it appeared to go much smother until it came time to add it to my cart, and then they said maybe I'd need to pay a deposit to add the fifth line to my familytalk plan, and I'd have to do that in person. Sigh.

After doing this year after year, I wonder why...
1) I expect them to ever figure out how to make this process work.
2) I keep suffering through the day 1 hassles willingly

Now my only questions are:
  1. Will the stock hit $700 today (it's at $691 as I write this)?
  2. Should I sell some of my shares, expecting a technical pullback from program trades?

First world problem, to be sure. My Apple holdings are mostly "found money" from some timely options trades last year. :D

Just ordered at 9:15 a.m. EDT/6:15 a.m. PDT directly through AT&T. My receipt said my phone "should arrive as soon as Sept 21, 2012."

I just ordered a 16GB white model from AT&T and got confirmation saying expected delivery 9/21.
Granted it has lots of disclaimers about potential delays but we'll see.

I tried to stay up but fell asleep. I can't believe the shipping slipped that quickly (I looked to order 6 hours after it went live). I think some of it could be marketing as there will be lots of iPhone 5 sold out in an hour stories this week that are ultimately good for the company. Who knows. I will be hoping for a 9/21 delivery, but again, who knows.

My friend just placed her order through AT&T website for a white 64gb model at 9:25am EDT, and the message on hers was "will deliver 9/21/12." So, perhaps the white models aren't as popular this time around.

I bought mine at 8 am EST this morning and it says a 9/21 shipping date also.

My email from AT&T says should arrive as soon as Sept 21. Ordered around 7:40am.

Apple's site won't let me select existing or new or any other account type since 6am.

I wish we could combine Apple's website smoothness with the operators' websites capabilities. That would be perfect :) Apple should just go ahead and buy AT&T! :D

You should go back and check. The order times absolutely pushed out on those as well in the first wave. Again, I'm not claiming one or the other. I'm actually saying that neither "side" of this debate can claim they know for sure.

$30 upgrade fee, apparently.

Yeah, ouch, last time I upgraded it was only $18. Then again there was an AT&T rep at the Apple Store back when I got my iPhone 4. He said if I called up AT&T they would wave the upgrade fee since they were having activation issues.

Sure enough they waived it, after a little nudging. :) Probably be won't be as lucky this time though.

So glad i set an alarm for 2am CST and used the apple store App to order the new phone. took all of 90 seconds. after hearing about the website troubles last night seams like the App was the best route to go.

Does Apple use FedEx or UPS? Or does it depend on where you live? I live in NYC.

Depends, not just on location but also what contracts they worked. If memory serves (I've had each on launch day) I've had more from USP than FedEx, but someone else could have the exact opposite experience.

Yes it will probably hit 700, or at least come very close. I would caution you though as I would anticipate a major pullback in October both from a technical perspective looking at the chart and given FYQ4 earnings are probably going to be pretty weak (depending on how many 5s they can sell before 9/30). Also, the street is expecting an iPad mini in Oct that, based on last weeks event, the new iPod touch pricing, and lack of any parts leaks, probably doesn't exist. Finally, you're seeing the market shoot up because of QE3 yesterday so a lot of this is artificial. Trade with caution over the next 6 weeks IMHO.

I jut caved and preordered. I was originally going to skip this generation. Dammit you people!!

I think the new iPad was FedEx for me. I live in Brooklyn. Don't remember which for iPhone 4.

Has anyone ordered from the Verizon website this morning? Are th black 32gbs delivering on the 21st?

Ordered 16GB White at about 5am this morning. And confirmed on the phone at about 830am. Confirmations says will deliver by Sept. 21st.

I'm more of a holder (I'm far from a short-term trader), but I think you are right that we'll see another pullback, perhaps after it hits some high. QE3 (i.e. turn the money printing presses on full speed ahead) is also part of it.

Apple's done more for me than I ever expected it to, so I've gradually pulled back. Companies don't stay at the top forever, but I don't see myself pulling out of it entirely.
