Perfect. This is exactly what I imagined months ago.

Not real multitasking, but with push notifications and these 7 APIs it'll be just like multitasking in every way that matters.

It's fair to call it multitasking. It'll do all the same things, it'll just use less battery to do them.

I don't need Pandora in the background...I need Pandora music in the background. Perfect solution.

Wow, you can control Pandora through the lock screen. That is like the icing on the cake. I had thought it would be cool if they did that, but never in a million years thought it would happen.

Is this real multitasking -- multiple tasks running and consuming CPU cycles and memory at the same time -- or is it just a fancy state-preserving task switcher?? hmmm...

They are providing 7 APIs presumably for various functionality. Games may requires a state-save while music apps will tap into an audio API.

EDIT: Oh look, they even call it a Background audio API.

UI looks exactly the same except the dock and the ability to add backgrounds. lock screen hasnt changed either.

MULTI-TASKING!!!!! Great!!

Now let's see how all the people who were against multi-tasking spins this.

I'll go first
"Apple is late"
"Apple is charging iPod touch users for something that shouldve been there"
"Apple is bringing in an old idea and touting it as a brand new feature"
"Apple killed my first born"

Did I cover them all?

Multitasking, finally! bravo apple welcome to the 21st century... its amazing how long it takes them to implement simple features...

You got it, everything you said is 100% true...

I agree. I like it.

Yeah, it'll suddenly and conveniently be the most important feature of the iPhone . You've got to admire the hypocrisy at times!

Don't worry there will be something else they won't want and we will drag them along kicking and screaming anyways. ;)

Wirelessly posted (Nokia N70-3 Ireland-Opera: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

So far so good...Multi-tasking seems done perfectly to me :)

NOOOOOO! is this the old notification system?

Was going to say the same. It doesn't matter how they did it as long as I get the same experience as if I would run the whole app in the background.

i had my doubts due to limitations of ram, but its so nice, im so glad,

and 6 other tentpole features, stay tuned
new homescreen, so excited

pandora looked great

skype in the background! Great!

Am I the ONLY person pissed about the UI looking the EXACT same except the dock? Even the lock screen looks the same.

Doodle Jump :D

Same, I was hoping to have a homescreen with weather showing, calendar, recent messages, etc - rather than all apps.
