Hopefully google will pick someone new next year to make the pixel xl. Mine hasn’t had any issues but it still doesn’t look good

https://www.engadget.com/2017/11/11/pixel-2-xl-unresponsive-edges/

According to Android Police, this happens because the device's accidental touch protection feature is just bit too effective. The good news is that it's a software issue, and Google is already working on a fix. Orrin, a Pixel 2XL Community manager, posted on the thread to inform people that the Pixel team is already investigating and addressing the problem in an upcoming over-the-air update.

In an effort to preempt similar complaints about bluish or greenish tinted screens and burn-ins, Apple recently updated its support page to explainthat those are perfectly normal for OLED displays like the iPhone X's and Pixel 2 XL's. Nevertheless, iPhone X's screen seems to come with its own set of issues. Some of them have a nasty green line going down their edges, while others stop responding to touches in cold temperatures.

That's interesting! Especially considering this where the iPhone 6S does a better job than the Samsung S8:

Is it the higher resolution display on the Iphone X that does it? Is it Android 7.1.1 that is more lightweight compared to iOS 11.1?
I don’t know, it could be, but iPhone 8 was way faster in camprison to other Android devices. In my theory it could be a higher res display is taking more processing power than the one they got on older iPhones. Obviously Android has improved a lot and that could also be a factor to all these performance upgrade.

This video speed review mentally deficient. Because people use apps in a last in/first out manner, reversing through 15 apps. All this test aims to do is show that the samsung has an extra gig of ram for caching. yea, average person uses 15 apps a day, what a load.

Yea, we'll also complete ignore processing power, you know, because apple's processor bitch slaps the piece of garbage battery eating crud in the samsung into the trash heap it deserves to be. Because who needs augmented reality, who needs real time video and photo processing that happens all the time on the iPhone.

A samsung apologist soliloquy. Congratulations to the idiot setting up that straw man video. I love android fanboi's contrived desperation.
Chill! Obviously the difference is not a big deal but it was a surprised for me at least. GeekBench score would have been translated twice as fast for A11 chips but it’s not. Like I said the difference is minimal and both phones performs really well as expected. I wouldn’t call the person idiot desperate fanboi. Because you seems hurt from what he presented, and from a real world experience he’s pretty close for some people way of using their phone.

The iPhone X is a good phone. Not not the +$500 markup in Australia over the 6S+ (2015) for no good reason. I dont reward bad behaviour. Instead of upgrading every two years it will have to be four. Im not made out of money. Tim Cook jsut needs to go, he sees Apple as a fashion icon more than a consumer technology company.

I got my iPhone X on launch day. Love it. I had the Google Pixel 2 XL but returned it. Reason: blue tint when tilting screen otherwise I would have kept it as my main phone. It was silky smooth, great battery life, loud clear stereo speakers and both its front and rear cameras were excellent.

Having two camera lenses on the iPhone is a HUGE deal for photography in general. The two lenses are not just to create portrait effects. You get much better image quality when taking a telephoto image with a dedicated telephoto lens rather than enlarging from a single wide angle lens (which the android does).

^ If that red color option was available for the P2XL, I would be $1000 poorer right now. That's how superficial I am. ;)

Red is my second favorite color behind black. That's why I play roulette. I usually bet on black because my fav numbers 4, 13, and 22 are black.

Every pants I wear are black slacks but I have over half a dozen red shirts and I don't mean DoorDash ones which I wear to sleep. I also have two red hoodies. I can do an entire laundry load with all my red clothing.

Loved the black and red motif since Michael Jordan. Nearly 30 years loving those two colors.

Sith happens. Darth Maul or any Sith dressed in black with a red lightsaber just looks so cool.

Red is the color for passion and I'm a very passionate person on things I like. Never do things halfway.

I noticed people check me out more especially the females when I wear black and red. Since I'm also fair skin, it just stands out.

Never owned a red smartphone before, so why not? How often do we really see it in that black & red combination?

Bye, bye panda if red had happened. I do prefer the panda P2XL over the black one. I think the iPhone X looks better at the front but the panda P2XL looks better as a two-tone thanks to the more interesting back.

Problem with white matte finishes is how dirty it gets and discoloration into yellow. I remember owning a white DS lite and the shoulder buttons got really dirty and darkened.

But red Pixel 2 XL, I would still go for it. I don't care if it can't connect to my Mac or Bluetooth transfer issues. I don't care if the paint chips off. I like those two colors together. Matches my usual clothing. Black & red combo rules!

I personally picked them both up and do so every year. Right now I'm using my iPhone X as my daily driver and my Pixel 2 XL as my lay in bed phone for social media browsing, web browsing, and gaming.

It's basically my at home phone that acts as a small tablet for the moment.

I personally like iOS and Android the same and hate them the same way.

If Android had an "iMessage" and if iOS had a better notification system and let me change default apps and let me just do more I'd have no need for one or the other but I do.

Not to mention I have hundreds of dollars in both ecosystems lol. I'll likely always be a double OS user ha.

so you just got an X AND a Pixel... lucky man $$$

Yet still in speed tests the pixel is faster on every app except games. Apple fans said to wait on 11.1 and even after 11.1 it's the same result.
[doublepost=1510435648][/doublepost]
Many prefer the pixel 2xl camera so okay they are on par. Speakers are probably the same? How so? Did you test them yourself or are you making random assumptions? The speakers are better on the pixel 2xl.

How is build quality superior? You keep saying this.

Yet the snapdragon 835 keeps pace with apple a11 chip. Apple fans a few years ago was all about, it's not about the numbers. Now the numbers are better on iPhones so it's all about the numbers. Yet in real world usage the 835 is close to the A11 chip. Either that or Android is much more optimized and faster than iOS. So what is it? 835 is way behind or iOS is way behind Android in optimization?

iPhone X build quality is better. How is this even an argument?

It has always been about real world performance. The 835 is 2 year old technology beaten by the A9 chip. iOS 11 is to blame for A11’s sluggish performance. When processing photos and videos, the A11 stomps the 835, despite iOS11.

The iPhoneX has zero issues right? Oh wait a minute...
  • Green line down the screen, check
  • Cold weather touch issue and freezing, check
  • GPS drifting problems, check
  • Face ID login issues, check
  • Extra $150 to be an Apple Beta tester, check

Get a replacement and all of those can be fixed. Replace your Pixel 2 XL as many times as you want, you’ll have a crap screen every time.

Had an original Pixel and it was really good. Other phones came and went, including Droids and the LG G6. Currently have an S8 and an X. The Pixel 2 XL had great potential, but it is currently a train wreck. Google needs to appraise the management team that allowed this phone to go into production.

iPhone X is cheaper when you consider it has 5 years of guaranteed updates vs. 2 years for the Pixel :)
Yes, but after 2-3 years, the iOS updates you get can actually begin to slow down your productivity. The last update or even second to last update your iPhone/iPad gets should unofficially be called hardware upgrade time update.

I have almost the exact same apps on my Pixel as I did on my iPhone. And the ones I don't have there are good alternatives. Android apps are very polished now. I can also run trials of full versions of apps. My battery is fine. The latest version of Android is very good at hibernating apps and caching them when not in use. The battery lasts around the same that my iPhone 8 did. Maybe longer. Most of the stuff people complain about regarding Android just aren't true anymore. As for security, that is still an issue.

Trials, oh goodness I had forgotten about them.

They were (and are) a really good way to work out if an app is worth $XX, and I actually spent a lot more on apps with Android than I do with iOS.

I'm really looking forward to picking up my Pixel 2.
[doublepost=1510564407][/doublepost]
More just your general opinion than fact...

"Mostly plastic".... uuhm... how? It's an aluminum body phone. It just has a plastic coating on it so that it's both not ice cold to the touch, nor is it incredibly slippery if you use it without a case.

...

I'm looking forward to a phone that isn't like greased jelly in one hand - making it impossible to use without a case and making its design pointless.
[doublepost=1510566321][/doublepost]
'Pixel visual Core' chip coming online in Android 8.1 will most likely make all these camera reviews moot.

Given that the Pixel camera is already superior by most metrics (it obviously doesn't do long focal range or zoom as well), that there's a full 8 core AI image processing chip not yet being used is amazing.

Every Pixel user has a crap screen, plastic phone, and huge bezels.

Oh PLEASE.
Like I agree with you X is better than Pixel 2 XL...
But stop spitting out crap from your mouth. It pisses me off.

Pixel 2 and 2 XL ARE NOT THE SAME DEVICE. It's like saying iPhone X and 8+ are the same.
2 XL is not a plastic phone, nor has huge bezels. Get your facts right.

The big thing with the pixel phones and other Android (despite there being plenty with dual camera and multi lens, much like Nokia's camera with Android functionality) is that their software can drive what's called Dual Pixel Capture. What that does is use a software to digitally split the image that the 12 MP camera takes by essentially taking 2 pictures every so slightly off vertically from each other to achieve a close to twice the resolution photo. Google's pixel 2 for example is using AI and machine learning to literally improve photo quality as it goes. Those on the pixel 2 will see better and better pictures the more we take them. Try doing that with An apple device.

The screen, if you've listened to nearly anyone who has the phone, is NOT as bad as the media has made it out to be, in fact many sites have made reposts saying it's not as big a deal as first thought. They have provided solutions for all of the issues thus far. Hypersaturating their screen colors from the damn near accurate colors they had, solved burn in issues by making slight changes to brightness and other buttons. The iPhone X's screen is plauged with issues too. The one we have on display in our store has been on since we got it, as per apples installation, and it's screen has already begun fading and losing refresh rate. It looks awful, and I haven't sold a single one on order because they look at it and are like, "why is the screen look like that" to which the explanation entails. Their screen shape simply made it harder for Samsung to make a good quality OLED. It's not even AMOLED at that. Apple cheaped out for the inferior tech. And since I missed it at first, the Snapdragon 835 came out in January this year. The 836 was supposed to be ready for the pixel 2s release but Qualcomm got delayed due to productional issues with their smaller die sizes

Yes, maybe it's because of the display on the iPhone X since I guess more RAM (they use the RAM for VRAM, right?) is needed for that display and with 3 GB RAM in total the iPhone X might need to refresh apps more often than an iPhone 8 with 2 GB RAM but with a display with much less pixels. Maybe they should have gone for 4 GB RAM in the iPhone X. iOS seems to do some nifty RAM compression for apps in the background, but I guess that isn't enough when the Note 8 has 6 GB RAM.

I wonder how the iPhone X would have fared if it was running iOS 10.3.3 and if the Note 8 was running Android 8 (would Android 8 be slower or even faster than 7?).

Still, since the loading of apps (generally) is faster on the Note 8 (with Android 7.1.1) while the iPhone X (with iOS 11.1) has – at least on paper – a quite a lot faster CPU makes me think Apple (and/or the iOS developers) has some work to do in iOS.

Edit:
Here the iPhone X seems to be faster at loading apps compared to the iPhone 8 Plus despite the same SoC and amount of RAM:
A bit confusing I think, but there the reviewer thinks it's related to the the interaction – gestures on the iPhone X (faster) compared to the home button on the iPhone 8 Plus (slower).

Android 8 will feature some big speed improvements, I do agree it will be interesting to see. The project treble program that releases with 8 will pull more major phones to the newer OS. The a11 does seem beastly, I'd like to see where apple takes it because it could push phones in general forward in Mobile computing

As every day goes by the evidence mounts up that Apple have jumped the shark. This is not a great product.
Must be why it continues to get glowing reviews from reviewers and users... Every product selling at the rate of millions is going to have some issues once it gets into people's hands.

No here's the thing, how about the company that gives you a product in response for cash makes that product to a degree where it doesn't fail. You ever buy a can of coke that let you down?

Google Home is an actual vessel for Google Assistant, a superior AI effort to Apple. HomePod is a music curator for $350. Once Google Home integrates with Sonos (2018), the only thing keeping the HomePod afloat will be iSheep.

-- Wow, name calling already?
-- Despite what most people think, HomePod and Google Home are not similar products, they may appear to be the same but they serve different purpose. Google Home is a vessel for Google Assistant, HomePod is a music curator with exceptional sounds quality that blows Google Home out of the water. HomePod just happens to have Siri on it.

Google Play music and Apple Music are essentially the same. GPM has a much better interface (Apple playing major catchup with Apple Music because the first version was a mess).

-- Better or worse interface is a matter of personal preferences, and objective, not a fact. E.g. I think most google interface are trash comparing to Apple. Does it make it a fact? No.

Google Docs is multi-platform. Pages, Numbers, Keynote (a joke application, honestly) only live on iOS and Mac. I have a mac at home and I love it, but if I need to work on a document at work, Apple has given me no help.

-- Wrong. Google Docs is a multi-platform for people who use Google Docs only, just like Apple office suits are super convenient for people who prefer to use those. For people who prefer to use Microsoft office suit, Google Docs is meaningless and just as a hassle as Apple suit.

Google Photos is significantly better than Apple's iteration. Apple has done a lot to catch up, but even on iOS, Google Photos is a better photos application than Photos.App.

-- Once again, better in which respect? Please provide some more details.

He's not wrong. The reason to go Pixel is all software and services. For the longest time, the Android benefit was "Hey, you get the best services, but if you don't like ours, make someone else's the default". Now, Android has leapfrogged iOS 11, the services are still better, and Apple has neglected Siri beyond usefulness.
[doublepost=1510582969][/doublepost]
Sure. It's general knowledge that Google Assistant is a much better product than Siri. It understands more, can do more, and integrates with more 3rd party tings. The Google Home/Assistant ecosystem is huge and the entry point is $49. It's a great little device. Heck, Chromecast is better than AirPlay.

-- The only thing true in your list if Google Assistant is better than Siri. The rest are just your opinions.
GoogleHome is just a cheap device to get Google Assistant to the home, while HomePod has a different purpose. It's used for Home Music entertainment. HomePod blows Google home out of the water in term of music and sound quality. Despite what most androids fans think, Google Home and HomePod have different purposes and are not comparable. HomePod just happens to have Siri on it.

Chromecast is better than AirPlay? Really? LOL. You must haven't use AirPlay. AirPlay is miles ahead of any similar wireless tech in terms of image quality, vid quality, ease of use and reliability.

Google Docs is much better than iWork - can do more, is a business standard (GSuite), and has more functionality.

-- Like I said in another post, Google Docs is just convenient for people who use Google Docs. For people who user Apple Suit or Microsoft Suit, Google Docs is just another product, not better.

Google Photos has slightly more features.

-- What features?

I've used both Android and iOS and Android just feels like it can do more. It has a little more care and feeding but works great.

Did everyone get everything off their chest or do we need to drag out some virtual boxing gloves too?

You could level that same criticism at Googles doorstep and you wouldn't be wrong. Just look at Androids sloppy implementations of Facial Recognition and Finger print sensor (when it was initially released). The Pixel is using LGs crap displays that have all kinds of issues. Then you have some Pixel phones shipping without the OS.

Android didn't implement facial recognition Samsung did IIRC.

===

Everyone in this thread has taken a side and spent their money we don't really need to show each other our loyalty since by your purchase you showed your loyalty. Apple cannot build a phone that would temp me to buy it because it doesn't fit in well with the rest of my junk but that doesn't mean that Apple is building a crappy phone. The Pixel 2 XL roll out could have been MUCH better and the screen could be better that doesn't make it junk it makes it a middle of the road handset. The Pixel isn't really aimed at iPhone users that's the roll of the Galaxy, The Pixel phone/book/c are aimed more at expanding the Google ecosystem with a dash of halo and for tinkerers that aren't broke. The former Nexus users are pretty well served by OnePlus and the explosion of ROM's and general internet chat seems to show that.

If all your other junk is made by Apple then the iPhone is a no brainer

If all your other junk is made by Google then the Pixel is a no brainer

Maybe that specific unit has a hardware issue? Apple didn't cheap out on inferior tech, Google did by using an LG panel.
