My pebble has E-ink display and it doesn't even last a week, and you talk about a month i loled.

Kindle with 10X screen area and 10X battery lasts a month, so i guess the Pebble sucks. I know that screen isn't the only factor, but you have to figure Apple can do better than a couple of days.

Alternatively, make the device look nothing like a watch at all and wear it on the other wrist:

Yes. I actually think your idea is what it'll be more like.

I've predicted for a while that Apple will do an "amulet" instead of a "watch", because of the stigma that the latter have gotten with the young.

Imagine the ads for your new Apple "Magic Amulet", etc.

Hardly. The Pebble uses an e-ink display, not terribly high res either, with a 130mAh battery and I typically would get 3-5 days use out of it. Apple would need some amazing tricks up their sleeves to out do that using only a 10mAh battery. Using something like Mirasol (used on Qualcomm's Toq) would help but that watch is using a 240mAh battery and supposedly only lasts a few days.

Kindle with 10X screen area and 10X battery size lasts a month, so i guess the Pebble sucks. I know that screen isn't the only factor, but you have to figure Apple can do better than a couple of days.

This looks like a great idea for someone with one of those tiny backpacks and no pockets.

For anyone with pockets it seems rather superfluous (other than as a fashion statement).

Will Apple's next wearable be a big gold iRing that displays the % battery capacity remaining on your iWatch?

I'm reading a book on Nikola Tesla right now. The idea of wireless charging from a great distance by something that's not big and cumbersome, is a fascinating one that i hope pans out. If we're talking a little router sized base station to beam power to my watch, i'm all for it. Someone should dig through apple's old patents to see if anything similar to this has been patented by them already so we could connect the two

I totally agree, wireless power would be absolutely brilliant, and even with current limitations, it is great for specific purposes.

Apple has a patent for wireless power supply, with the iMac being the base station and the keyboard/mouse as the receivers. Something like that might just work, since the keyboard and mouse use such a minuscule amount of power and they're near the iMac usually.

Ok. It just popped up in my head. What if...the iwatch has a 3 day battery life...that's the downside. The upside, is that the wireless charging works well from a few feet away. So you stick this base station thing on your night stand next your bed and it charges while you sleep, eliminating the "awww i gotta charge it EVERY night?" complaint.

Blasting yourself with high-power RF is generally thought of as bad.

But on the other hand, it would suck if you want to go on a camping trip or something and electrical outlets aren't exactly naturally occurring. So what do you do? Battery powered base station. Leave it in your backpack and when your watch needs juice, it charges wirelessly without you ever having to even check battery life.

Nice idea, but direct connection to the base-station battery would get you 95% efficiency, induction would get you 50% in absolute ideal conditions, reducing exponentially as you moved farther from the base station. Farther being inches.

lol, and an "AMULET" is going to win the young'uns over? The more youthful generation actually appreciates retro – it will all come down to styling though.

Not sure what is the point of this type of device

Seriously, why do I NEED one of these? A smart phone made a lot of sense: its a phone, I can surf the web, messaging, great applications, oh, and it serves as a clock, etc. But, again, why would I need such a device? To avoid the inconvenience of pulling my phone out of my pocket to see who is calling, who IM'd me, or sent me an email? Or some biometric-centric reason?

Sorry, I just don't 'get' it. Plus I HATE wearing a watch so, I just won't get it.

I think the current Ecodrive models are guaranteed for 5 years, but I have no idea what battery life is in the real world. Just picked one up for my wife, we'll see how it goes. If an iWatch battery lasts for 5 years, I don't think it will be an issue. We're not talking about something like a Rolex or high end watch here. It's going to be a replaceable tech gadget like a phone, tablet, etc.

Mine lasted longer than that, so I suppose I should be happy, but I wasn't when I found out how much Citizen charges to replace the battery (and it can't be done by anyone else). Consumer tech is expected to be made obsolete in a matter of just a few years, but a good watch should last forever and not require factory service every five or so years.

Amen...

I'd be happy if they just released the Mac Pro...

To quote another post in this forum: "They said December but not the year".

Obviously Apple's priority at this time of year is consumer electronics/phones/pads, and not their most high end computer with smaller demand.

This actually reminds me a lot of the movie industry which releases some academy award potential movies the last few weeks of the year to a very limited number of theaters so they qualify for the voting in 2013 but the general distribution is delayed until 2014. I won't be surprised if Apple does the same with the MP: a very limited release and relatively long shipping times in December 2013 to meet their stated commitment and then
much faster shipping times in the new year.

Look, we've waited YEARS for the MP upgrade, so what's a few more weeks.

No battery life for over 3 days = no buy. If I go out camping for a weekend, I don't want a dead weight on my wrist. I'm glad that they're taking their time and not rushing it out so they can shout "I was here first!"
you might want to fall back because that's not happening.

Could it be that your iPhone (6) charges the iWatch? The distance between the two will almost always be less than a meter. That would also explain the small battery of the iWatch.

Of course, I wouldn't be an engineer if I couldn't come up with new ways to solve problems. But I am realistic, I can see when a problem is beyond current technology. Since you can't make "new physics", only discover things you don't know about it, there are rules that we are pretty certain to be true and cannot be broken. The distance of an RF transmission is one of these, and that is the only useful form of wireless electrical power that physicists currently know of.

We can beat Maxwell equations :D

you would be a fool to buy first generation iWatch.

Just look at iPad 1, original iPhone, retina macbook pro ..

With your logic... Apple won't even try to make it then since no one will buy the first one. They need some feedbacks.

If anything... they will call it iWatch 2 and you would be a fool for not thinking iWatch kind of came from the old iPod Nano (square looking). All this time they were prolly working on the battery life.

you might want to fall back because that's not happening.

The Qualcomm Toq has managed to do that. Albeit without an OLED, but it's definitely possible. They might pull something off using curved batteries and a curved display. Remember, this is not a product that's coming out in a few weeks where these things aren't feasible.

I had a dream last night that I had been waiting to buy an iwatch, couldn't get one, so i opted for a generic brand smart watch for $200 ish, and found it very useful for notifications. It had a thin flexible screen maybe 2x3" with a 3/4" wide black plastic band. It appeared to be made of very cheap plastic, sorta puffy, but it was surprisingly effective, and had a good screen. In my dream I remember flexing the screen back and fourth to see if it would damage it, it was a great device and i was happy with it. Sort like something designed to be as cheap as possible without sacrificing any functionality, very utilitarian. Cool dream eh?

said to include wireless charging capabilities which will allow the device to charge from up to a meter away.

So you could go to sleep with the watch on your wrist, wake up in the morning and it's charged. Wow, that kind of technology would be incredible if it's real, and have far more sci-fi applications than just a watch.

I've seen wireless charging demonstrated before, but it was pretty clunky. If Apple could make it 'Apple-like' then this could be their next game changer.

Despite what I've said, this story is probably just nonsense, but I'm hopeful. :D

Did you just compare a tablet E-Ink battery to a really tiny small E-Ink smart watch? I loled again.

Did you just ignore the fact that I noted "10X battery"? Next time read before you lol.

The point was that 1500mAh (kindle) vs 150mAh (iwatch) was about the same proportion of the screen area reduction 24 inch vs 2.3.

This. Having something on your wrist can open up a whole world of possibilities. This reminds me of how people claimed that the iPad was simply a larger iPod touch. That notion remains mostly dead.

I have a Note 3 and that phone is huge to whip out the pocket each and every time. So I can see the usage in that instance but not for a smaller phone like the iPhone. When I had the iPhone 5s it was super easy to grab it out the pocket. It starts to become redundant to have 2 devices fighting for your attention. It’s like a Bluetooth headset; nice idea on paper but you start to forget to bring it, charge or don’t need it. And it’s hard enough keeping our phones charged up; do we need to worry about another thing to charge.

I agree about a good watch lasting longer than 5 years, but Citizen doesn't fall into the high end category. You can buy a lot of their Eco models on sale for $175 - ~ $500. And I shudder to think what a factory service would be for a Rolex. The iWatch isn't going to be even remotely like a finely crafted watch.

I just don't see the use case for these...

The Samsung commercial says it all: a person is holding a phone in their hand; it rings; then he turns his hand over to look at the message on his watch. Why? Dude, you already have the phone in your hand, just look at the screen!

What functionality is the watch going to provide that isn't already with the phone, which you have with you all the time? Nowadays, more people have phones than watches.

Maybe Apple will come up with something new that is unique to a watch and for which you would not want to look at your phone, but I don't see it.

trololol stop justifying yourself. You know apple aint gonna go e-ink just get get a month of battery.

seems like a useless device to me.

As useless as this comment?

Hmm...I dreamt last night that Alph, the sacred river, ran through caverns measureless to man down to a sunless sea.
