They changed it because it's a bit cumbersome to use a 1" screen on its own without a strap. It does make a great watch, though.

That was my point..... It could appear that they [Apple] saw what 3rd parties did with the 1" Nano with the watch strap cases etc and rather than evolve the product into a watch they have made space for another product instead.

----------

I don't get why this is a big deal? I charge my phone 2-3 times a day. I'm used to battery management.

Sort of defeats the point of a mobile phone if you need to stop and find somewhere to charge it 3 times a day! :D

iTunes isn't compatible with Android though. What you are saying isn't necessarily false, it just won't happen. Apple needs to provide enough functionality in the watch where it can do enough without the need for another device.

Well, it will definitely need Internet access in a way. Without it, it won't be able to do very much "smart" stuff.

Several reasons, why the watch itself won't have Internet access integrated.

First of all, I don't see that anyone will go out and get an additional data plan for their *watch*. You can use the same plan on several devices with a second sim card, but a lot of, if not most carriers in the world will charge you for that option.
Secondly, they are not going to fit a 3G/4G chip and an antenna into a watch. You would have to have a sim card in there, too.
Next issue: battery life.
And finally, soon everyone already is going to be carrying around an Internet device with them. It would be foolish not to harness what is already there. Smart watches will definitely not replace a single phone anytime soon, so they will not compete but work together.

Bluetooth 4.0 seems to be a good technology to couple a smart watch with a phone.

If this really is what Apple is referring to when talking about their next big thing, then I think this will be a huge embarrassment for them.

Related: as I was typing this I hit the "sell" button to take my profits on 500 shares of AAPL. Will sell the other half of my shares at $400 and not look back. Recently went long on GOOG instead.

Good luck. Reading your posts elsewhere, you seem to be the ultimate savvy investor :D

For one, it's not taking up square footage in stores that sell more per square foot than Tiffany & Co. Second, more women would rather have Jonathan Ive's team design their fashion accesories. For another, it likely doesn't integrate as well with iOS apps and ecosystem, where lots of customers have a lot of previous investments.

Ive's good buddy Marc Newson designs some pretty cool watches. Maybe he's taking some inspiration from Newson. :D

Really, now. How many times in your life has your watch ran out of batteries? ... Looks like you're the one who's going to have to deal with it, very often too.
.

I do. No batteries to run out. My watch has a spring. Has to be wound every day or so. Billions of dollars worth of these types of watches are still sold every year.

"Hey dude, you got the time?"

"Sorry, my watch is dead right now. Ask me this time tomorrow. "

"Hey dude, you got the time?"

"Sorry, I'm watching pron on my watch right now. Ask me this time tomorrow. "

oh somebody needs a sarcasm detector

You mean your thing about jailbreaking? That isn't sarcasm. What you made was a joke... A bad joke, but I digress. Sarcasm is a way of speaking ironically, usually using a shift in intonation.

I'm pretty sure it will be wireless charging.. So its the same as laying your watch on your nightstand at night while you sleep. Meanwhile it will charge and sync your data with your iMac as the iPhone does now.

By which you mean every morning you'll get a pop up alerting you that your iCloud storage is full so a backup hasn't occurred in the past XX weeks?

iWatch ISN'T happening....

Here's the thing. I like watches. For many people, watches are not for time, they are jewelry.

I have an Omega, Cartier and Tag. I simply cannot see myself wearing a $200-300 iWatch in lieu of my "real" watches..... I also cannot see myself wearing 2 watches (ie the iWatch AND my real watch).

So here is Apple's problem. How are they going to get watch wearers to STOP wearing their expensive treasured watches for a piece of aluminum/glass/plastic that happens to run iOS?

And also, isn't it a bit "nerdy" to wear an iWatch? Watches are individual. People don't want the same thing that the other guy is wearing.

Call me crazy, but when all is said and done, I just don't think this iWatch is going to happen, and if it does, it isn't going to be a success.

How would you make calls practically on something that small? Dig into your pocket for a headset every time it rings?

The current iOS format wouldn't work very well on a screen size smaller than 3.5". If they rework iOS to fit a 1" watch screen, then they may also be able to use the screen format on a small phone, something the size of the tiny Nokia feature phones.

That is what I was referring to when I said an iWatch with fully featured iOS could point to a future iPhone Nano, not that the iPhone Nano would be the iWatch.

It would allow Apple to offer a much cheaper phone that would not impact on their current style models much because it would appeal to a different market.

iPad, iPhone, iPod touch all run the iOS. So the argument that Apple makes a new OS for everything is invalid.

Also, remember iPhone runs Mac OS X. This terminology has been said by SJ.

Guess he didnt know what he was talking about either huh.

You seem like the typical "Apple expert".

The iphone and ipod touch are the basicly the same. The ipod nano to touch, to apple tv to ipad to mac os... The iphone and ipad both run ios but the ipad is tailored with multi finger gestures and specific apps. The os is tailored to how its used dumbass you dont throw windows on a cattiplillar because bitches love windows and cattiplliars. The iwatch may run "ios" but it wont be full ios, not a chance in hell. You seem like the typical dumbass.

Ps i never liked how sj said it ran mac os... I get where hes coming from, it runs desktop like apps but it is not mac os

This will be dead in the water if they cannot get around the battery longevity issues. It has to last for at least a week as a watch only.

Also when I buy a watch I expect it to be a piece of jewellery that will last a good 10 years or even more. No accessible battery will make us end up with a draw full of watches.

The only use I can see out of a device like this would be;

1. Normal watch functions, Time/Date/Stopwatch/Calendar
2. Radio/MP3 Player/Podcasts
3. Fitness device, Blood Pressure/Heart Rate Monitor

Anything else would be overkill and silly.
Who wants to watch a video on the screen the size of a watch face?

I can't imagine even wanting one of these. I like my old analogue watch with real physical hands. Something about it being real...

Funny, the watch on my wrist right now sits on my end table every night. It wouldn't be a huge problem to either inductive charge it or simply plug it a lightning connector to the side.

Also, what about solar cell and self "winding". Granted self winding watches are fully mechanical and don't use tons of energy, but Citizen (I think) has a self "winding" watch that actually charges a battery. I'd assume if this rumored iWatch was iOS they would have to take power consumption techniques to a new level, even for iOS.

I keep saying though ....

People wouldn't mind having to charge their watch each day if their watch took the place of their cellphone!

I don't think the battery technology is here yet for Apple to pull it off, but I have to think -- what if the wristband itself contained a bunch of tiny batteries?

IMO, it would be pretty mind-blowing if the next major iPhone release was in the form of a wristwatch. I mean, why not? Sure, you'd have a smaller screen -- but you've also got 2 different sizes of iPads to choose from if you want iOS on a larger display for more serious apps.

can't wait to have to charge my watch every day.

I can just see the first law suit when one of these things has its battery meltdown right into someone's wrist.

Like it or loath it, wearable tech IS coming.

Apple will be in the market, so will Google, Samsung, LG, HTC, everybody.

Watches, glasses, shoes etc You name it.

Sure, it would be great to sit here and talk about Desktops and Laptops all day, but they aren't the future.

I'm glad bluetooth headsets isn't as popular as I expected.

Haha, it's as if the iTV that was supposed to come out last year has just vanished, yeah? I think all these publications just get together, toss a dart at a random electronic, and spend the year all pointing each other to each others headlines and newspapers making a ton of money.
