Maybe I completely lack vision but this doesn't just feel like a category upsetting breakthrough like the iPhone or iPod was. Is a potential iWatch the kind of thing no one realized they had to have?...

I'm guessing/hoping there's more to it than some sort of watch/BT display hybrid that it seems to be now. Personally....I haven't worn a watch in about 10 years. Would require something pretty drastic to get me to change that.

I had a watch that had tiny solar panels around the edges that kept my watch running. Granted they might not be able to power a full iOS device but they could keep running a power-saving "Watch Only" mode.

That's what I was thinking too. It would make perfect sense to have it charge by Solar. My G-Shock has many functions that could run down the battery but it has the Solar battery built-in. Never had an issue.

Just wait until Samsung release an iWatch competitor.

1. Samsung release it, call it the Galaxy Watch or something like that. It'll be made of plastic, it'll feature a design that follows all the iWatch design principles, albeit with a few minor changes like a "Samsung" logo in the front.

2. Apple will sue Samsung. People over the forums will argue as to who copied what.

3. Samsung will release a watch with a 3.5" display. Everyone will love it. Apple will be "doomed".

4. Apple release a watch which keeps a size thats comfortable for your wrist. People don't buy that. It'll be "underwhelming". Stocks fall.

5. Rumours of a new product being developed surface. Rinse and repeat.

why not an adaptation of the automatic watch mechanism, instead of winding a spring, charges a battery as you move your wrist around.

That can be done, but so far the power generation is too small in comparison to the power consumption by the watch or what have you. At best you are just getting some extension of usage. And the charging mechanism takes up space that could have been used to include a bigger battery, which also would have extend your usage time. Result is no value. But if you get the power consumption reduced enough, then this eventually works. I don't know if getting power consumption of something that has a bright screen down low enough is ever going to be achievable.

Dear Apple,

We don't need new category-defining products, we just need you to update the iPhone and iOS to offer features comparable to your competition. Is that asking too much? No iWatch. No iTV. Just give us a better iOS experience across multiple devices that actually works the way that we do. Also, can you give us a bigger screen please?

Instead of improving their core products, they want to spread themselves thinner. Yah, great idea...

We? Us? Who are you referring to? Please use "I" when you write posts like this. "I" don't need you to speak for me because "I" don't agree with "You".

I remember when this site was about Apple computers...:(

I remember when Rumors were really a mystery in this site... Now rumors are like real news of what's coming !

Shut up

Would you...

  • Play a game on your watch?
  • Watch a movie or TV on your watch?
  • Read an email on your watch?
  • Make a call through your watch?
  • Want to talk to your watch to issue a command to another device?
  • Take a photograph with your watch?
  • Look at a photograph on your watch?
  • Scroll through a document on your watch?

Is it just me, or are there really people who are answering "yes" to some of these questions?

As long as there's enough functionality to make people want to wear these things, I don't think people will have a problem charging their iWatch every couple of days. We're already trained to do that with most of our mobile devices.

gotta love the controlled leaks... it's just so obvious when it happens.

Now it remains to be seen whether Apple will actually launch the product this year or did they float the new info out there to try and prop the stock price up a bit.

Which makes we wonder why we haven't seen Apple, Google, or Samsung poor tons of money into battery research. The DOE recently rewarded 120 million for research Link 120 million is nothing to these companies. Why haven't they pursued the same level of investment?

A most excellent question.

so if i stay away overnight , at a hotel or such for work, or go on holiday i have to remember to take my watchs charging station with me...no thanks, unless an iWatch lasts at least a month between charges its just not a feasable purchase, ill stick with my Casio watch, its good on a single battery for over a year, and works underwater too.

Well presumably it will charge off a lightning connector and you will have brought such a charger anyway for your iPhone and/or iPad. And the charger can be nothing more than cord that plugs into your laptops USB port. And if you don't travel with any of a laptop, iPad or iPhone, then I really don't think you are part of Apple's target audience (and I'm surprised you are reading this blog.) And the article does say that they are seeking to have power extend for 4 to 5 days between charges.

Also, comparing this to a watch that tells time is obviously not right. Apple is not suggesting you are buying this thing for its time telling features. Obviously the thing must do much more than that. And if it runs the full iOS then of course it will be able to do much more than just tell time.

No thanks. I'll wait for Tag Heuer to offer their version of this for $5,000. Then I'll be ready to buy.

Hmm full iOS is interesting. Each app will have to be optimized but still, it's better than starting from scratch.

But is it necessary, don't we just want something to tether to our phone?

Its not like Apple has that many products. Cook and the management team are smartly thinking about the future, and where future growth might come from. It's not like they can't be working on a smart watch and improving iOS at the same time.

Do people still wear watches? With everyone running around with smartphones, I see this as heading in the direction of a downsizing market.

I will turn 43 this month and I haven't worn a watch in over 30 years. And even as a Science-Fiction fan I cannot come up with a single reason why I would change that in the future... My phone is my watch, "walkman" (a word that only people who were around in the 1980s still understand), ebook reader and mobile web browser.

I could imagine playing with Google's Project Glass, though. Terminator vision for everyone:

"Possible Answers:
Yes/No
... you, ...hole."

I don't get why this is a big deal? I charge my phone 2-3 times a day. I'm used to battery management.

Charging a watch sucks.

I have an Android based smartwatch that I liked a lot and used a lot... but stopped wearing simply because I had to remember to take it off and lay it on its charger it every day or two, which of course means it's useless if you fall asleep and forget.

It also left me without a watch at night when charging.

Perhaps they could add batteries to the watchband itself, to give it a longer life.

It would also be okay if they came up with a super fast charging method, like the way that Power Ring works with a Green Lantern. Zap! Done. ;)

Wait. I have it. Up here in the winter we use electric blankets. Now if we could just inductively charge the watch while sleeping... patent time!

that's weird. my imaginary iWatch lasts six weeks on a single charge. bloomberg and the verge got faulty units.

If this really is what Apple is referring to when talking about their next big thing, then I think this will be a huge embarrassment for them.

Related: as I was typing this I hit the "sell" button to take my profits on 500 shares of AAPL. Will sell the other half of my shares at $400 and not look back. Recently went long on GOOG instead.

Because Google glass is the future? I'm sorry but every time I see Sergy Brin wearing those goofy glasses I'm embarrassed.
