That's because Apple keeps it simple and has 1 iPhone each year unlike the dozens or hundreds (?) of Android phones over the past few years.

If you look at marketshare of android vs iOS its a different story.

Market share isn't the point. Apple is selling more iPhones every year. They are growing. Growing and growing. There is no way that they could maintain the same market share measured in units sold as an operating system which is sitting on handsets they're giving out on a buy one get one free basis.

Based on that argument BMW is making all the wrong choices and Cartier may as well shut up shop and go home. Apple are competing at the high to mid-high end of the market and they are kicking all kinds of ass. Hence their profits make up more than half of all profits from mobile phones. Hence their penetration among high end users who spend more time online (look at mobile browser numbers) and buy more apps (ask Android devs how much money they're making form the Android Market).

^ It's newstand just with some mags in it this time.

4S is what I expected, I'm kinda pleased it's staying at that, only got my white i4 a few months ago so will be cool to still feel up to date.

People seem to be forgetting that the big deal here is iOS 5 and iCloud, two very very cool services I've had great fun playing with as a developer.

The lack of an appearance upgrade isn't a failure on Apple's side, it's a display of strength and market confidence which can be backed up by steady sales of the 4 and 3GS.

We also have to remember that to increase your inventory can be marketing suicide, the 3GS,4, 4S and a 5 on the market would just confuse the hell out of people.

The 5 is not coming. If it were you just wouldn't make the 'S' as everyone and their dog would buy the 5 or keep their 4, making the 'S' completely obsolete before it had even hit market.

Apple are a business, not a fanboy pleasuring service.

Has the newest iPhone always been immediately available in other countries the same day as it's released in the US?

1.5 years and a stinking CPU update!?

Geesh, windows 7 phone here I come, screw this.

What else do you really expect though, other than a bigger screen? The CPU update will extend software functionality - and don't forget, this is about more than just Apple's own apps, it's about what devs can do with the hardware. If they gave it a different shaped casing and stuck whatever hardware the 4S has and called it an iPhone 5, would that satisfy people more? At the end of the day, it works as a phone, as an iPod for music and video playback, as a web browser and as a handheld GPS unit (and on top of that all the standard smart-phone PDA functions), it's difficult to think of any vanilla applications that updated hardware would provide that is beyond what an uprated processor will do. As for the design - it clearly sells, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

**** IT! I'll just buy a white one this time + iOS 5 + whatever else they add and I'll just tell myself it's a new phone. At least it'll look different than the one I have.

At least watch the actual event before you think jumping to the Zune phone is your best option.

Already rocking a Samsung Focus purchased for $150.00 new with warranty. This phone will tide me over until Apple gets away from the iPhone 4/4S's godawful case design. Looks gorgeous, but so damned uncomfortable to hold.

Apple turning into Microsoft...once an exciting company and now it's, "Meh."

So very sad. :apple:

This is just a trick! Apple did this on purpose just so we'd get more excited.

LOL. There is no iPhone 5!

16 months for a 4s.... lame...

I think this will be the biggest dissapointment, it's not that I mind the idea of a 4S I like the 4 - I actually said to my wife that the 4 would be a serious thought for me whatever happens tonight because of that, I think it's just...16 months for the equivalent of a compass (3G to 3GS) might be a bit dissapointing :p

Make me smile Apple :)

While disappointing, the A5 upgrade is hardly the equivalent of a compass. Think more along the lines of putting an i7 and dedicated graphics chip in a Core2 Duo MacBook case.

Is really a windows 7 phone is that much better? I'm failing to see how a new faster, better iPhone with new cutting edge software features is the final straw for you because it looks the same ... at least you didn't say RIM.

.

Better, no, maybe yes. Depends on what you want. But, unless you are a HEAVY iOS app user, the Mango update really makes the WP7 a nice smartphone.

I like how some people here seem to think that Apple is obliged to present an “iPhone 5” to them. Seems pretty logical to me, since the iPhone 3G (major redesign) was followed by 3GS (spec. bump). Similarly, iPhone 4 (major redesign) appears to be followed by 4S (spec. bump).

But who knows?

People quickly forget that the 3G and the original iPhone were identical inside save for the 3G chip. Both had the identical CPU. No spec change at all, other than a case redesign and adding the 3G chip. The 3GS was a HUGE leap over the original & 3G models.

I skipped the 3G model because the specs inside were the same, and because there's no AT&T 3G where I live [and not even edge; i have to drive 10 minutes to get a signal on AT&T, but Verizon has a very strong and fast signal here].

I own the original iPhone, the 3GS, and the Verizon 4. Speed wise, the 3GS and the 4 are about the same, but the 4 has a much better display [and, in my case, actually allows calls to be made and received!]. As a developer, I still run and test my apps on the 3GS and in most cases from a pure speed stand point, there's not a huge difference. So going from a 3GS to a 4S should be a pretty big leap; and knowing that there's an A5 in there, vs the A4 of an iPhone 4, it should still be a fair upgrade for folks who, for some reason, feel the need to upgrade phones every year.

Some of you are some stubborn. I don't think it will matter what is announced today - long after Cook's left the stage and the janitor is sweeping the floor you'll still be refreshing your browsers hoping that there's some additional surprise Apple is going to bestow on you.

I actually cannot wait for the 4S if it's the only device, because these forums should suddenly become a lot better, quieter, and more sensible if the people who continually, for weeks on end, threatened to leave actually do so.

You don't seriously believe they will, do you? Get set for another forums year divided in two: half of it spent complaining about the current Apple products and half spent hyping rumours into gospel truth and then blaming Apple when they don't materialize.

Better, no, maybe yes. Depends on what you want. But, unless you are a HEAVY iOS app user, the Mango update really makes the WP7 a nice smartphone.

Mango refreshes the smart phone, while iOS still has the same boring UI. Sounds like some here are getting sick of the kool aid though.

Wow. They took 16 months (probably longer) to come up with a new iPhone and all we get is the 4S. They could have at least called it iPhone 5, which would be more logical... 4S doesn't make any sense.

Why would it be more logical when the 4 was the first handset to mirror its place in the product line? We didn't have an iPhone 1,2 or 3 so why all the hysteria about numbers now?

So.....looks like the hopes for an iphone 5 are dead.

Extremely disappointing. The glass sandwich design was plain stupid and far too delicate for a mobile phone, and the 3.5" screen is extremely limiting for anything other than making calls and flipping through the music app. Games, browsing, typing, etc would all benefit from the 4" screen all the competitors are using.

The recycling of the glass sandwich really pisses me off the most though....can't tell you how many people I know with cracked backs on their iphone 4's, and I barely know anyone who has made it through their contract without cracking the front of their iPhone (any model).

I'll hold my breath a little while longer though...if they replace the back panel with that liquid metal crap they licensed and wedge a larger screen in there, I guess it will do.

Our house had two iPhone 3GS models for two year and an iPhone 4 for one year. No damage to front or back. One home button stopped working and Apple fixed in 10 minutes. :)

Now the real mystery is - where did these fake iPhone 5 case specs come from, and why were case manufacturers so confident about them that they invested real money tooling their factories to build them?

Counter intelligence leak from within Apple?
