This thread is pure entertainment, my eyes are filled with tears of laughter! Keep it up guys!

Dear mac rumors,
please get over the following things

1) Apple does not owe you anything
2) It has not been 2 years. It has not been 1.5 years. It has been 1.3 years. Hyperbole does not suit you
3) No matter what they call it, it will be a 5th generation phone.
4) If you care about the model number so much, then you should reconsider your motivations
5) If you care about the cosmetic look so much, you should reconsider your life
6) if you really have the idea that apple is shooting to replace the phone in your pocket every year, you should review some history. This is not for iphone 4 users.

Thank you

Market share isn't the point. Apple is selling more iPhones every year. They are growing. Growing and growing. There is no way that they could maintain the same market share measured in units sold as an operating system which is sitting on handsets they're giving out on a buy one get one free basis.

Based on that argument BMW is making all the wrong choices and Cartier may as well shut up shop and go home. Apple are competing at the high to mid-high end of the market and they are kicking all kinds of ass. Hence their profits make up more than half of all profits from mobile phones. Hence their penetration among high end users who spend more time online (look at mobile browser numbers) and buy more apps (ask Android devs how much money they're making form the Android Market).

Doesn't matter. They need an iPhone 5. Sure the 3GS sells well and the 4S will sell well, but there's too many high end androids and WP7 coming that people will be surrounded by several choices of phones that may "look" better. There wasn't choices like this in 2009 when the 3GS was launched.

Already rocking a Samsung Focus purchased for $150.00 new with warranty. This phone will tide me over until Apple gets away from the iPhone 4/4S's godawful case design. Looks gorgeous, but so damned uncomfortable to hold.

I do agree with you there! I much prefer the feel of holding the 3GS in my hand than the 4. The edges on the 4 are not smooth and it isn't comfortable to use as a phone. The 3GS design is much better, IMHO, and I really wish they would go back to something along those lines, rather than the hard edges of the 4. But for all the accessories out there, and coming out with a new phone so late in the year, I doubt Apple wants to change the design of the new phone, since the demand for new accessories that fit it would be greater than the supply available if a major redesign were to happen this close to the holiday season. Apple makes money on the 3rd party accessories, charging a license fee, so it makes sense not to have them with no accessories available this close to the holidays, for a new phone!

shocker!

Tip the cap to images of one of the top selling smartphones of 2011 and 2012! Go Apple!

I'm hoping it's just a 4s... then I can just ignore it, save my money.. let my !#@!%! AT&T contract run out and switch carries next year!

Party is over. Sell apple's stock now.
Overreacting, much?

It will still sell because hardware drives the software experience and iPhone (along with the iOS devices) is EXCLUSIVE to the iOS experience and ecosystem. Even a 4S with an A5 chip will make it a faster performer. Just a shame Apple decides to stick to a 3.5-inch and they decided to milk the same design for another year like they did in 2009.

But their software is what keeps millions locked into their ecosystem and they are so popular that they can still get away with something like this even for another year. iPhone is just a "vehicle" to iOS.

Neither disappointed or surprised by all this because I never intended to update to the next iPhone whether we get a 5 or not. It just confirms that Apple is falling well behind in certain hardware aspects especially screen size. I am personally curious about next week's announcement for the Nexus Prime.

Im done with my ATT contract and on ATT prepaid. I'm looking for Sprint to get into iphones so I can go to a company that has customer service and bars in my area.

Mango refreshes the smart phone, while iOS still has the same boring UI. Sounds like some here are getting sick of the kool aid though.

VERY bored with the iOS UI and I LOVE the Mango UI. But...I have certain apps that I use which are iOS only. I guess I could get an iPad or iPod Touch...but nah...I will just wait until next year.

Quoted for truth. So many damn whiners.

The 4S is an enormous upgrade on my 3GS and apple puts in incremental changes that really only make upgrading phones worth it every 2 years. Every year is an improvement, but Apple is shooting for a two year cycle.

I imagine most people bitching have an iphone 4. Let me let you in on a little secret: you are not the target demographic. I have a 3GS and I am thrilled. Its basically an ipad tablet's power...in a phone. Coming from a quickly aging 3GS thats all I need. Adding IOS5 just makes it that much sweeter.

The 4 was also a gorgeous phone and easily my favorite looking device in the last 5 years. I wanted to get a 4 simply because of how good it looked. Now I will have a chance. Those with an i4 can wait until the next one comes out, which will be a guaranteed chassis revision.

Also, If the only thing you care about is cosmetic changes and a smaller number, then you should really reconsider your priorities in life.

I have a 3GS and I'm disappointed in there not being a bigger screen. The other thing that annoys me, and it's not apples fault, is that I have to sign a two year contract on a phone that isn't exactly what I want. So I won't. I will stick with my 3GS and it's superior design (IMO) which feels much better in hand than the 4 and hope ip5 has a bigger screen for my eyes and fingers.

This really feels like a stop gap measure from apple after such a long wait.

Agreed. I would really like to see an iPhone body design similar to the Samsung Focus, but made from Gorilla glass and metal with a similar weight (if possible). :)

Well, there you have it folks. Almost 2 years and nothing but a spec bump.

Wow! It's almost June 2012, hey? I missed Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day, St. Patty's Day, Easter...

The crybabies (and I don't mean to single you out) in this forum have NO perspective on reality.

I don't get why everyone is complaining so much. They did this with the 3GS. And what exactly makes the hardware (that we haven't even seen specs on) so far behind the android phones someone mentioned. A larger screen etc doesn't mean better. Not everyone wants a giant phone. If they had a radical redesign every year they'd be making up new phones just for the sake of it.

I have the 3Gs still and I know I will be tempted by the new iPhone. I know iOS 5 will run on my 3Gs but likely certain features will be cut.

Because its not 2009 anymore.

In the future, Apple needs to "think baseball" or solve some math equations in its head to avoid this condition of premature release. Worked wonders for me. :p
