I would say that Jobs + Ives leaving their positions WILL hurt Apple within two years.

An Ive Quote from the recent past (sort of)

After reading several articles including the one that everyone is in an uproar over....I ran across this quote from Jony in 2002 from the BBC website. This is referring to the fact that he lives in the US not the UK.

Quote--(Ive has no regrets about his big move. He says, "It's difficult to do something radically new, unless you are at the heart of a company.")

Here is the link to the article from the BBC.

I hope Jony remembers this and can come to an agreement with the new power structure at Apple. It would be a big loss if he goes....IMO.

Jobs & Ives are not immortal. Sooner or later (hopefully later) they will leave this earth, then what? Without them Apple will never survive? As crucially important as these two are there's gonna have to be a day when Apple will need to learn to survive without them, like it or not. I'll even stick my neck out and say it may actually be healthy for Apple because it will then give it a chance to prove to the world it can still be innovative and be a leader in this industry.

I am quite confident that Jobs & Ives have provided Apple with an excellent foundation upon which to function.

To be quite frank - Like it or not Steve and Ive brought Apple back from being irrelevant. Somebody tell me which designer I the house of Apple has the balls to take Ives place? Who can take over Steve Jobs place? Tim Cook? Ha!

Apple is a peculiar company propelled by key people. Yes it's a company and others are behind the scenes - but, these two ARE Apple!

Are we talking about the same "Jonathan Ive" who designed the first-generation aluminum iMacs with washed out screens?

Wow, what a true loss it would be if he left the company.

To be fair, that was a cost cutting measure to use TN screens and not IPS. I suspect if JonJon had his way, it would have been IPS.

I think you underestimate Tim Cook. He has been running the show for quite some time now. Steve has surrounded himself with excellent people and his instilled his vision among them.

Steve is merely a conductor at this point, especially with this health status over the past years.

No, he's replaceable. Jobs isn't. There really are other outstanding industrial designers in this world who would LOVE to take Ive's place. In fact, it may be due time for such a change.

I agree with your assessment. It's time to let Ive go home. Apple needs new ideas to freshen things up.

Don't blame him one bit.

The Double Custard at Marks & Spencer kicks ass... ;)

I don't care either because if Ive's leaves, Jobs dies, Apple will be bankrupt in 6 years. It won't have the leadership talent to continue as it is.

If Apple really is that dependent on just two guys, they are f***ed regardless. People leave/can't stay/die eventually and it would be very short term planning not to make sure you have more talent than just two people on board. They aren't being that smart of a company that people keep attributing to them if they really are that reliant on just two people. If Jobs really is a forward thinker and actually cares that Apple survive past him (and who knows, maybe he doesn't), you'd think he would be trying to make sure there are people he trusts to run the company when he's gone.

Yeah, I think it is silly of the board to tell Ives he can't go to England if he's considering leaving. With today's tech I just don't see how it would be that hard of a hit to have to deal with a lot of telecommuting vs. losing him entirely.

But, honestly, if this is the straw that broke the camel's back, Apple was not in anywhere near a secure position that anyone thought (and would not be a good investment if they are that reliant on two people).

He's probably earned quite enough money to live more than comfortably for the rest of his life. If he wants to move back to England there's not much Apple can do about it. What can you offer the man who has everything?

He may have an insatible desire to design other things then electronic product cases. That's what you can offer him.

Apple really wants to keep that "Designed by Apple in California" don't they?

Apple's Jonathan Ive Considering Moving Back to England?

I don't see why Apple can't let him go work in the UK. What do they fear or what is the problem?

I like that, after reading this article, I feel as though Jonny Ive and Steve Jobs are the only two people that work at Apple.

If I was one of the other designers or engineers or one of other thousands or people who work there, I'd feel like a total sack of crap after reading this thread.

Great video clip. Thanks for the link.

I agree with many here who feel that Ive can be replaced more easily than Jobs can. While I think Ive is a great designer, Apple seems to be sort of stuck from a design perspective. Everything they make now seems to be flat and aluminum. Also, their design aesthetic is being relentlessly copied.

When the original iMac first appeared, I thought to myself, "Wow! That's a computer!?" I thought the same when the iMac G4 debuted. Those designs had both a quirkiness to them, and a beauty. The current crop of iMacs (of which I'm an owner) look more utilitarian to me. They're magnificently functional, but I'm stunned by the technological achievement more than any artistic beauty. The design is so minimal that there's really nothing to the computer -- except my own work that I view on the screen. That itself is brilliant. But I guess I miss the quirkiness.

Nicely put!

This sounds like plain old fashioned rumor mongering. Have you actually ever lived in the UK? I doubt he wants back to ol blighty.

I hope he does leave, cause then you'll all get the good ol failing Apple back, the Apple that very nearly went bust before Jobs returned. Because you seem to want that?
I don't care either because if Ive's leaves, Jobs dies, Apple will be bankrupt in 600 years. It won't have the leadership talent to continue as it is.

fixed that for ya ... it is going to take a lot more than 2 guys departing the company to Bankrupt Apple.

The Apple Board of Directors proves yet again that they are idiots and will drive the company into the ground in a heartbeat without Jobs around to keep them on a leash. All this incompetency should be purged swiftly and it's long overdue.

Man oh man!!!

Ive is not the only one who can make good Apple products. There are plenty of talents out there. A person can't be too valuable. It's the whole team.

I would say he has more than earned to go wherever he wants. He made an amazing contribution to the electronics industry.

If both jobs and Ives left apple in a short period of time, it wouldn't bode well for the company. Ives is a visionary in industrial design. I'm sure apple would pay him whatever he wants for him to stay.
