Really Important Question

What percent of Apple customers actually know who Steve Jobs or Jon Ivy is? That might be a VERY VALUABLE poll to conduct. That would help a lot of people to relax and stop worrying so much. I am the only one of out at least 20 friends and business partners I know who know or care who makes the iPad or iPhone or their macs. Most of them don't even know which OS is on them. The truth is, some HTC phones look better than iPhone. Some of those older iPhone concept CGI images were really nice. Those weren't designed by Ivy. So, even if Ivy and Jobs both retire, Apple will still live on.

Do any of you know who works directly under Ive? Who they are? What degree of input they've had in the design of Apple products? Everyone is replaceable. Everyone. And Apple will go on with or without him, and, I believe, continue to make great products.

As an aside, I read he wants to go home to buy a razor and more black tee shirts. :D

Well, while Apple (or any business) is more or less a machine, you simply cannot deny that there are INDIVIDUALS who are responsible for any and all of the IDEAS. Yes, people will get replaced, and business will keep chuggin' along, but you can't replace personality, character and original ideas. You can substitue it for something else, but (for better or worse) you can't replace it.

obviously whatever he contributed to the company worked fabulously for apple! no matter where he works from, it'll be better to keep him happy than to try random design gods.

and if he's happier in England, I'm sure it'll reflect on the products. it can be a win win situation. apple needs to rethink.

Wtf are some of you monkeys yapping about Steve Jobs nearing death?!?!?! since when was this a realistic possibility? stop reading the trashy celebrity news magazines...

As well, some posters claim that it isn't hard to find new designers or even CEOs as talented as Jobs and Ive...

Ya, right.

It's people like Steve and Jon that make Apple what they are today... if it was as easy as you claim to find 'replacements' or 'equivalent' talent... well then there would be a hell of a lot more corporations on Apple's level... sadly, that isn't the case.

In the same sense that there isn't a replacement or equivalent to a Michael Jordan... there isn't one for Steve Jobs/Jon Ive...

What he means by "educate" his children in England... he means that he wants them to form their posh english accent. Because if they stayed in the US that would be all but impossible unless you homeschooled them etc.

In Somerset? Posh accent? LOL!

Holy crap, if Johnny Ive leaves Apple then that would be the partial equivalent of Steve Jobs leaving. There is no freaking way Jobs would let that happen. Screw the board. They'll work this out (I hope).

If he's hoping they'll go to university in Newcastle as he did, there's not much chance of posh accents developing. :D

Mind, booze prices may well be cheaper in UK student union bars – that's probably the driving force behind this.

Now that would be funny if he moved the kids to England only to have them develop stereotypical Cockney accents.

"Ello! Top o th' mornin' to ya guvna!" :D

Man oh man!!!

Ive is not the only one who can make good Apple products. There are plenty of talents out there. A person can't be too valuable. It's the whole team.

If Apple has a contingency plan for Jobs leaving, they surely must have one for Ive as well.

I am sure all the people working under Johnny these years have already learned a thing or two from him :)

This sounds like plain old fashioned rumor mongering. Have you actually ever lived in the UK? I doubt he wants back to ol blighty.

It's a great place to live but expensive (probably a non-issue his case)

Anyway, I wonder if he just wants a change of scenery to recharge and get fresh inspiration from a different art & design scene?

Eh Apple, if you can move production to China then you can move some product design to near Somerset. There are loads of engineer/industrial design types in Bristol. Don't see why Apple couldn't assemble a team there.

Moving might cost a few bob, but finding a bit of money is not a problem for Apple.

Some of the animosity that you see towards Steve Jobs on this board sounds personal. I wonder if the people sacked by apple come here to vent?

The other guy

Why not just hire back the dude from Palm/HP? He has designed an exact duplicate of the iPad for HP, so he should be able to keep the apple stuff rolling.

Come home Jon! If he's been there for near enough 20 years it seems fair enough to let him go.

For those who don't know, there is HUGE investment in England right now on high tech companies. With the new MP, the Cambridge boys are finally getting some influence beyond lunch with Back Benchers. Things like R&D credits and even -- shudder! -- exemptions from NHS are happening.

John Ive sees this and there are dozens of these new outfits that want him over there. I'm sure a knighting is in the plans if one of his ventures takes off. Apple needs John more than John needs Apple. IMO, it was a good run, time for him to head back to a hero's welcome and shag.

Uh, no way ....

Ives will never be a replacement CEO for Jobs! He's a designer, not even a "computer guy" or a "businessman".

He's done some great work -- but if Apple is so possessive of their designs that they can't cope with letting the work be done remotely? They'll probably lose him. He can find work at practically ANY decent sized company that designs products, given his reputation.

Meanwhile, Apple released some really great stuff before Ives was in the picture. I don't think there's really any monopoly on creative design talent... They can find someone else who probably isn't as well known or respected, but still has the skills to make some great-looking Apple gear.

Frankly, I disagree with all the "gloom and doom" about Ives leaving Apple. If they brought in fresh blood with a different perspective on design? They could bring in some interesting changes to the look of their products, instead of the rather incremental stuff we've been stuck on for years now. (I mean, take the iMac... Sure, it's aluminum and glass now, but it's essentially the same as the white plastic ones that came before it. It's an OLD design now, and even companies like Sony and HP have copy-cat all-in-ones that look like iMacs. It's nothing like the old G4 "lampshade" design, by contrast. Let's see something really different again with a new revision!)

Hopefully they can come to an agreement. if anybody were to replace steve I'd want it to be jonny.

That is a very good article describing Jon Rubinstein's position. I doubt if he will go back to Apple. There is way too much bad blood over there that he doesn't want to deal with again.

My take is we are going to see another "Amello to Spindler" debacle if Jobs and Ive both exit Apple in the next year or so.

Wtf are some of you monkeys yapping about Steve Jobs nearing death?!?!?! since when was this a realistic possibility?

Well, being as time only moves forwards... everyone is approaching their death. Jobs will die eventually, and being as he looks as though he's riddled with cancer, that date might not be far away.

That's like me saying if I move to America I will sound like a Mexican cowboy.

Also, Top o the' morning' is Scottish, not Cockney.

What happens when he works for a company that initially design something... rather than copy Apple's design.
