There's no question that he adds value to Apple. The question is "how much" value and is Apple's board willing to compensate accordingly? And even if they are, does Ives value money more than he values returning the UK?

or...

its all a negotiating ploy to raise his compensation level during Steve's extended absence.

lol! I never heard "Geordie" spoken, reminded me of the Irish Gypsies in Snatch.

That was a pretty understandable version. The North East coast of England is where the vikings landed... and there's still a lot of Scandinavian words in use that most British would never have heard of!

Still I'd like to be a fly on the wall when Mr Ive's kids come home talking like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBQxU8K1uJw (strong language)

That's not even put on. You do actually get cab drivers like that!

Man, I hope this isn't true. They should build this dude his own design compound in his own back yard if that's what it takes. What an asinine decision if they let him walk because of that. Apple wouldn't crumble overnight, but that's the beginning of the end if they let it go down that way.

Apple's crumbling all around us!

Interesting timing on this article...a couple of days after the Xoom launched, and a couple of days prior to the iPad 2 being launched. I'm sure that has nothing to do with the timing of the article.

I think this has more to do with the iphone antenna issue oversight than much of anything else. In the business world designers don't become CEOs - unless you're at an ad agency.

The company is banking something like $4-$6 billion in profit every quarter, why mess with the formula over what...a few million? Some stupid corporate rule or politics? Not worth it. I don't see anyone accusing Apple's design of getting stale, they need to stick with what's working.

wow...

Why not just hire back the dude from Palm/HP? He has designed an exact duplicate of the iPad for HP, so he should be able to keep the apple stuff rolling.

That doesn't make any sense. So, one guy/team pushed the envolope, and somebody else duplicated that idea, and you're giving as much credit to the copycat as you would to those who were there first?

Always wondered how long he'd last in the Bay Area rat race, living the American lifestyle. Now we know.

I'd welcome an Apple product that says on the back "Designed by Apple in London UK" :)

To be honest, I'm still a little annoyed we haven't been getting "Designed by an English guy at Apple in California" on all our best iProducts.

If Ive didn't design it, I think it'd give California a bad name to use their current tag on it.

Also, I'd be totally happy with Ive succeeding Jobs, and I think Jobs would too.

It's his life, let him do what he wants...

Don't laugh - remember the Scully years? (Macs that looked like business machines...)

Macs look like business machines when jobs was there. Manufacturing techniques to make machines like they do know didn't exist in the early to mid 80s. Everything was beige or black plastic.

I don't see how he can't live AND work in England.

Apple does have Airdrop and Facetime now, what more is needed?!

C'mon Apple really? The UK?

So far its:
"Designed by Apple in California,
Made in China"

I'm sure you can make it appealing on the next wave of Apple products like this:

"Designed in England,
Approved by Apple in California,
Made In China"
:p

First of all, lets not take this out of context. From what I've heard about english press it's pretty sensationalistic. I have heard many times that UK tabloids and mainstream press fabricate a lot.

I don't think Apple is going to just let him go, in this day and age, he could work out of his basement and be fine. The other thing to remember is Ive does the design work with a team of engineers. He draws up mock ups and picked out the materials, its not like he is hand making these devices in a basement ala' Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man. He more or less overseas this. The culture of product is embedded Apple. I think Jobs will be fine and Ive isn't going anywhere.

Unfair

You mean iconic Steve J. can work from home but not Jon?!! Don't upset a Brit, especially one with £12 mil+ and a shinny Bentley. You can bet HP will snap him up with an offer for anything he wants on his terms as they deploy webOS devices.

P.S. "Ive been considering a move back to England" is an interesting grammatical construction.

Wake up kids. This is complete *************, and not even good *************. It's not even a matter for the Board of Directors. Complete tabloid rubbish.
