It's his life, let him do what he wants...

Exactly.

In this day and age I'm thinking "ARE YOU FRAKIN' SERIOUS!?"
- We have laptops, desktops and high-speed internet connection - heck the UK has almost double the bandwidth speeds. FaceTime, ThunderBolt, FW800, secure VPN connections built-in to Snow Leopard and i'm sure LION. etc etc. There REALLY IS NO REASON why Jony Ive cannot:
Have a RAID array
15"/17" MBP 2011
Mac Pro 2011 (whenever that debuts)
3 CINTIQ's
and a SSH/SSL/VPN tunnel to headquarters and upload new drawings/schematics of new hardware, travel 1/3x a month to Cali for calibration on hardware development or even use FACETIME to do this.

Can't we all just deal with the fact that the Apple Way is not dependent on one or two people? There are a lot of incredibly creative and talented people at Apple who make the company and its products what they are. And Apple's customers also make the company and its products what they are. Would the loss of Jobs and/or Ive be a loss to the company? Of course. Would the company collapse or see its amazing run come to a crashing halt without either (or both) of them? No.

As long as Apple doesn't replace Jobs with John Sculley and Jony Ive with the design team from Dell, Apple will continue to thrive and innovate for many years to come.

Here's to $500 AAPL.

This just in: Apple has trounced all categories in which Apple had products, of the 2010 Engadget Awards -- Readers' Choice

Microsoft didn't do badly with the Xbox and Kinect, however they totally walked away with the Worst Gadget of the Year, the Microsoft Kin.

Ive not only knows what users see as good design, but his designs also are right in step with what the professionals applaud as well.

Don't worry. That won't last long.

I agree... Make the man happy and keep him at all costs. He's the best designer this generation has and apple should bend over backwards to keep him around in ANY manner

AMEN!!!!

Everyone knows Steve is incredibly demanding if not damn near impossible to work for. Ive has given 200% for DECADES and they can't accommodate him now?? Just one more example on a growing list of how Apple is losing its way...mostly due to arrogance. Apple makes some cool products, no doubt, but I have less and less respect for Steve and "company" as human beings with every passing year. Make that, month. Same with Google. Sad.

I hope Ive tells them to F off and goes to work for HP.

So sad. Just like so many successful Rock n' Roll bands, everything starts falling apart at the peak of their greatness. Apple will do just fine with either Jobs or Ive gone, but not both. Apple, pay Ive ten times what you're giving him now. He's worth it. :apple:

The following is a reply to at least half of the posts here:

Dude, it's a rumor. This is not proof of anything and it doesn't confirm anything. Look at the part of the above URL that comes between "http://forums.mac" and ".com" and take this for what it is.

And no, in 10 years Apple won't resemble what it is now. Does it resemble what it was 10 years ago?

Commute from Somerset to Curpertino? They're kidding, right?

My father did NYC-->Frankfurt, Germany for a few years when I was a kid. 2 weeks there, 1 week back, 2 weeks there, 1 week back... plus the summer in germany with all of us on corporate dime. Sometimes it can work, on the other hand after that job my dad stopped taking work with *any* travel for quite a while, commutes like that take their toll.

First of all, lets not take this out of context. From what I've heard about english press it's pretty sensationalistic. I have heard many times that UK tabloids and mainstream press fabricate a lot.

This is one of the most sensible comments I've seen in this whole thread. This, as well as others that have pointed out that this is a rumor and we don't know how much truth there is here.

In any event, I certainly hope that Apple works this out with Ive. I've got a tremendous amount of respect for his designs. And, while his team certainly deserves a fair amount of credit, too, the team leader does a substantial amount to set the atmosphere for the team to operate in.

...He more or less overseas this...

Actually, I think he wants to "overseas" it. :D

Jonathan Ives should be the next heir to Apple

Having thought about this before, Jonathan is the most logical (and really, only) choice to be Steve's replacement. Apple doesn't need a business leader (Cook, et all), they need someone who can express/create feeling and soul through the products offered. Apple is not just about sexy hardware; Think about what it takes to make a great GUI, how you interact with something, how it works... that's how a designer is trained to think, and only Ives could carry that thinking beyond what Steve envisioned 30 years ago now.

Apple had a business leader back in the 90's, and ended up bringing back the soul of the company after almost going bankrupt. That's what people don't get about Apple.

The only logical thing to do here is to relocate the campus to Alabama.
  • Steve Jobs can commute in from CA
  • Tim Cook can go back to playing Banjo with his hillbilly friends
  • JonJon can fly in from the UK

i don't see why the board has an issue with this. let the man spend four months a year in london - he's a designer/artist for crying out loud! a change of scenery might result in a better looking iphone and new mbp design ;)

Assembled in US

Design in UK, Manufacture in China and Assemble in US...Sold to the World. :D
Jony wants:
1. Another fat paycheck
2. No Steve, no Go
3. Quits

This reminds me that a few years ago I played a jazz gig at his house (in the gardens) in Milverton, Somerset (I live in the area). It was a really nice house, with swimming pool and loads of land around it.
Unfortunately Jony wasn't there.. well i assume not - I only realised whose house it was several months later so wasn't looking out for him!

People talk like he is the only guy working there ... life goes on.

and in business ... anyone and everyone is re-placeable.

I believe that is absolutely true. I don't understand why he cannot work at home, as some others have already said, this is 2011 for goodness sake.

Apple, let him move wherever he wants, and then build a design studio there. It's not that difficult to understand. Best industrial engineer ever gets what he wants. Bend over backwards and pay up. How many tens of billions have you made off of him? It's a drop in the bucket. Didn't you develop FaceTime HD cameras for this purpose?

He literally touches every product, every model, every sample, they keep every prototype, his hands are on it until the very end...

Yup. Anyone who thinks that a design director doesn't have final sign-off on every single detail, down to the tiniest little bit, hasn't worked with any good design directors.
