not good

Sounds petty to me...

From what I know Jonathan Ives has been at the root/core of some of Apple's most award winning designs/products that Apple has released in its history.

If this guy is really that good Apple should have no problem building him a design/engineering studio/workshop anywhere he dam well pleases.

It is my opinion unless there is some really big reason not to they should give him what he wants even if its going to cost a little money.

to all the people saying apple "cant afford" to lose ives, HE ISNT THE ONLY GOOD DESIGNER IN THE WORLD!! stop being so over dramatic....not like he is the only one there anyways

Will the creative process be more negatively impacted by Ive doing more telecommuting, Ive leaving the company, or Ive being resentful that Apple is strong-arming him into not spending more time in his home country?

Why not let Ive do what he wants to do w/the understanding that if the performance drops off he'll have to return to the States or give up his position at Apple? After so many years with Apple and being a key figure in the turning around of the company I think he's earned a little slack on his leash.

Lethal

I didn't state my thoughts on the matter, I simply stated that we have no idea what the process is like between Ive and the design team(s) at Apple.

FWIW, I would assume that he would be able to work effectively from overseas and hope that he's able to if that's what he wants.

But, like I said in my first comment, we simply don't know what the design process is like.

If Apple camp on their position he's gonna leave that's for sure, kids and wife are much more important than Apple. No Jobs and then no Ive, the future of Apple is getting dark..

Losing Ive would be a devastating blow to Apple -- in terms of both its talent and its public image -- second only to losing Jobs. The value to Apple of these two particular individuals' exacting attention to quality and detail cannot be overstated.

One wonders if Ive is anticipating an Apple without Jobs? Perhaps working with Jobs has been his primary motivation, and once that's gone Apple will have to sweeten the deal to keep him.

Uh

"friend of the family told The Sunday Times: 'Unfortunately he is just too valuable to Apple and they told him in no uncertain terms that if he headed back to England he would not be able to sustain his position with them."

This makes no sense to me. They need him so much we are going to fire him?

"because we need you so much, you have to work 24/7 and we will install cameras to make sure you don't leave the office or go to the john"

apple is getting annoying and sound more and more evil. he's done a great job. let him do the work as he pleases.

Don't laugh - remember the Scully years? (Macs that looked like business machines...)

and we watch Apple stock tank even further starting tomorrow...

Tank even further? What are you talking about?

To the rest of you who think this mean the end of Apple, will you please stop and think before posting?

My first reaction, "Oh *****"

My second reaction, If Ive is homesick then Apple better move his family out here. Simple.

To be honest, if I have 18 Million I'd want myself and my family to just see the world, chill out and relax for a few years.

When I've done everything and seen everything after a few years, I might consider finding something interesting to do part time again.

Can't blame him one bit.

I'm sure others can design a thin metal box with smoked glass on the front.

Apple should be very grateful for all the work he's done and wish him the best, hoping he will come back in the future.

This just in, Steve Jobs just sent an army to England to conquer it and make it part of america so ive wont leave. More coming soon.

How immensely and disgustingly short-sighted to tell him no and lose him altogether than allow him to continue working for Apple and be happy.

Yeah, let's piss off and frustrate one of the main reasons Apple has been so successful, that's REALLY smart. F'n idiots.

If I were Ive, I'd tell Apple to shove it and I'd be on the next plane to the UK.

Ive would have five job offers before his plane landed.

This reports sounds like yet another poor decision by Apple. For the past several years, each release of new hardware and OS/X seem to have as their prime objective the migration of consumers to new hardware when existing hardware (and software) would do just fine with a little more Apple support. But there's not much profit in supporting last year's products, is there?

And I'll come out and say it: this has the stink of Jobs all over it, just like too many other Apple directives made to support a monopoly that looks more and more like Microsoft's every passing day.

But Jobs will be dead soon, if appearances are any clue. What will happen then? Improvements, one hopes. Maybe Apple will at last have a CEO that isn't obsessive about taking credit for the work of others and then forcing them out the back door.

They currently live in the States with him – the article suggests that he and Mrs Ive want their twins to be educated in the UK, hence the desire to move back there.

My third reaction, Apple needs to by a top Private School from the UK, and move it out here.

You might be right however why would you want to cook the Goose that lays the golden eggs?
