No, he's replaceable. Jobs isn't. There really are other outstanding industrial designers in this world who would LOVE to take Ive's place. In fact, it may be due time for such a change.

Everyone is replaceable, even $teve. He hasn't designed anything himself in years. He's just a figurehead.. an icon at this point. Just because he steps down doesn't mean he can't be replaced. The question is, who will fill his shoes and not give the company a bad name, like Ballmer.

I'd love to see Jon I. leave Apple, move back to the UK and get picked up for remote consulting work by some Android developer (or G themselves). Now THAT would be interesting. Oh come on fanboys, admit it.. a little shake up and innovation outside the walled garden is nice!

Why can't he commute from the UK? He could go to the US like a few times a year and work over the internet most of the time... It's still better than nothing!

one wonders if ive is anticipating an apple without jobs? Perhaps working with jobs has been his primary motivation

+1

If Ive leaves he should go to Mercedes and resurrect that completely directionless brand.

Everyone loves Apple products because they have such a perfect functional good looking design. IVE has done all this ...

If Jobs and Ive goes ... Apple will be like Sony and others ... nothing special.

This rumor sounds pretty bogus. It's not consistent, not to mention I think the whole world knows what happens when the board removes key ppl at Apple (i.e Steve). There is a board, but the boss is Jobs, Jobs will have the final say. I think this is just S&*T stirring.

= Oh come on fanboys, admit it.. a little shake up and innovation outside the walled garden is nice!

Got to agree, would be nice to see some younger people at the top of Apple, reassure us that once Steve and Jonathan go, it wont be a down hill ride.

I didn't state my thoughts on the matter, I simply stated that we have no idea what the process is like between Ive and the design team(s) at Apple.

FWIW, I would assume that he would be able to work effectively from overseas and hope that he's able to if that's what he wants.

But, like I said in my first comment, we simply don't know what the design process is like.
You said you agreed w/the board's position of not letting Ive spend more time back in his home country because "...a virtual presence is simply not the same as actually being there."

Is that not stating your thoughts on the matter?

Lethal

Intercontinental working arrangement is impossible for a tightly controlled company like Apple. If Ive returns and works in the UK, Apple can no longer use "Designed by Apple in California" and it'd be devastating for the Americans. Jobs' health won't really permit constant air travel. Ive will probably be reluctant do travel back-and-fro once he returns to his home country. You know how temperamental Jobs is and Ive is probably at Jobs' beck and call. So, it's a no win situation for both men.

Will, it's time to have a new designer for Apple. The product designs look stale now. Personally, don't fancy metal enclosure for computers. gets dents and scartches easily.

People talk like he is the only guy working there ... life goes on.

and in business ... anyone and everyone is re-placeable.

So you're saying Steve was replaceable this last decade when Apple magically went from disaster to a ridiculously successful company? And the man who was key in designing a revolutionary phone like the iPhone and then the iPad and not to mention the iPod is clearly easily replaced. Maybe there are people somewhere in the world that could have replaced this, but the odds of finding them are not very good. They need to keep him, especially if Steve isn't going to be running the company in the near future.

The quote from "a friend of the family" doesn't really mean much. With Ive's money, he probably has a lot of "friends" that he hasn't even heard of. And the "Daily Mail" article doesn't really say much. So Ive wants to spend more time in England, and Apple obviously prefers if he didn't. That's all something that can be sorted out.

Makes sense... because in this day and age he wouldn't be able to communicate or send any design work back to the mothership in a reasonable amount of time.

Oh wait, this is 2011!

In what way does it being 2011 do away with the 8 hour time difference between CA and the UK? Is Johny Ive really going to live on Cupertino time in the UK? Also when you have the responsibilities Ive has there is a constant need for him to be face to face to collaborate the other executives otherwise he is working in a bubble. Only mid-level chumps get to telecommute except in H'wood movies.

And what are you basing your rant on, other than a story from a less than reliable source?

If true, what makes you think you know what's better for Apple than the team that has gotten them to where they are today?

HE has created most likely what you use to make calls, type on, listen to music on, millions and millions use HIS design every day, he is responsible for Saving Apple because HIS designs have brought Apple masses of sales.

Yeah, get rid of him, he's replacable sure :rolleyes: you don't put your ****ing desinger into product selling videos and air them at press launches if you don't consider him to be important enough to be recognised the same way as Steve Jobs.... Apple's stocks WOULD take a hit if he left because he is just as realted to Apple's products as Steve is to Apple.

And as to the complete and utter tool of an idiot who posted complaining about where the DC converter is placed in the MB :eek::eek: seriously mate, just don't post ever again....

Gosh, if only there was some sort of inexpensive technology that would allow instant video communication over the internet. Alas!

AAPL is large enough to continue without Jobs and Ive and be successful. There are a lot of talented designers in the world.

I'll tell you this though. I won't miss Ive's vomit-inducing videos introducing magical new products that will revolutionize the industry.

Well, he also needs to decide how important it is for him to have a top spot at one of the premier companies and brands in the world. It's an opportunity many would make sacrifices for. You can't stay on top of the on-going design and development process for Apple while living many thousands of miles from Cuppertino.

******* £18M if you have to eat processed American cheese, plastic tomato and steroid induced chicken.

Nobody with that amount of money eats processed food unless he really wants to.

The commenters at 9to5 mac are saying this is Ives' threat to be considered as CEO and that everyone is making moves to be considered for CEO as Steve Jobs *could* be near death. Very sad if true.

Designing funky office equipment is quite a step away from running a multinational company. Completely different skills set.

lol ... you are comparing Musical Artists to Computer Designers?

give me a break ... Try comparing a Automobile Designer that leaves Ford and goes to work for Chevrolet ... happens every day.

These people are all replaceable with the next crop of Designers.

im comparing "talent". You can put it in any form that makes sense to you.

as far as your opinion, its yours. Im glad its not mine.
