All this wonderful technology should make it easy for a company to have offices in multiple locations.

Fire up the facetime chat for the team meeting already. What's going wrong Apple?

This is really smart, what are they trying to do, get him to quit?

I'm sure the competition would have a bidding war for him.

You might be right however why would you want to cook the Goose that lays the golden eggs?

true, i understand he is very valuable, but to say apple will fail without him is nonsense, does everyone think all the current corporate workers will live forever??

This could be a game-changer for Apple:

Apple may choose to establish a major corporate branch in the UK.

I have been to Apple, UK for an interview. Its not a huge branch; not huge at all. It's another branch for WWDC relations apparently.

But yes, there's a possibility now. Obviously, they won't do it for Jon, but otherwise they must be planning something.

If I were Ive, I'd tell Apple to shove it and I'd be on the next plane to the UK.

Ive would have five job offers before his plane landed.

This reports sounds like yet another poor decision by Apple. For the past several years, each release of new hardware and OS/X seem to have as their prime objective the migration of consumers to new hardware when existing hardware (and software) would do just fine with a little more Apple support. But there's not much profit in supporting last year's products, is there?

And I'll come out and say it: this has the stink of Jobs all over it, just like too many other Apple directives made to support a monopoly that looks more and more like Microsoft's every passing day.

But Jobs will be dead soon, if appearances are any clue. What will happen then? Improvements, one hopes. Maybe Apple will at last have a CEO that isn't obsessive about taking credit for the work of others and then forcing them out the back door.

I kinda agree, but you just threw it all away with "Jobs will be dead soon", that's completely uncalled for.

Did he take your idea? Did the dumpster out back smell?

Tank even further? What are you talking about?

To the rest of you who think this mean the end of Apple, will you please stop and think before posting?

Well, it WAS over $360, now at $348...

On this new I see it down to $330 by the end of the week - then there's the whole news about Steve Jobs and what will happen with that.

Not to mention oil prices and unrest in the Middle East...

Did my post mention "The End of Apple"?

"A friend of the family" is a tabloid tactic. It is equally plausible that this friend is hiding up the reporter's butt.

If the person IS real and really did speak to the paper then it is possible he or she is confused about the whole thing. Perhaps Jony did say they want the kids to go to school in England. Perhaps he did say that the wife is going to move back to the UK house. Perhaps he commented that the company had not yet decided exactly how they would handle his coming and going. And someone assumed that there was 'an issue'

Or even assumed that the Board gets the final word. Maybe they don't. So whether they are upset and would rather he been in Cupertino all the time won't matter if the folks with the power feel that it isn't that huge of a deal.

And remember, Steve is apparently "working" via email, phone etc while on leave. So what's the real difference between that and Jony working out of a house overseas, if he's willing to stay up late and get up early. There's probably a lot of stuff that doesn't need him there physically. When it comes time to prototype that's likely when his presence would be mandatory. So he flies over for a few days, weeks, couple of months, whatever

that last line is likely the reason for the drop, which happened with tons of countries. rather than the rumors that Jobs might perhaps be dying and gone in a month etc

and in business ... anyone and everyone is re-placeable.

Yeah Right, when your just like every other business everyone is re-placeable. To me thats a statement based on mediocrity. Think of Musical groups as businesses. Could John Lennon be replaced, Jimmy Page, Mick Jagger (im not naming younger bands as they dont seem to pack the same punch creatively/musically.)

My point is, when your dealing with something beyond mediocrity, which is basic business in america, that statement doesnt apply. Whos out there? The guys that work for LG, HP? Are you kidding.

So I'm guessing that Tim Cook has got the unofficial nod as the next CEO and Johnny got upset he was not chosen over The Hillbilly.

How immensely and disgustingly short-sighted to tell him no and lose him altogether than allow him to continue working for Apple and be happy.

Yeah, let's piss off and frustrate one of the main reasons Apple has been so successful, that's REALLY smart. F'n idiots.

And what are you basing your rant on, other than a story from a less than reliable source?

If true, what makes you think you know what's better for Apple than the team that has gotten them to where they are today?

Let's see:

1. iMac - in order to replace a hard drive, you have to rip off the screen and then drive yourself crazy making sure dust hasn't gotten between the screen and the covering glass. Repairing this unit is like removing tonsils through the rectum. Yeah; that was a great design.

2. MacBook Pro - After finally fixing the design error in the PowerBooks that necessitated removing the motherboard in order to swap out a bad DC inverter, the recent MacBook Pros have reverted back to that awful design. Score another one for Big Jon.

3. iPhones that shatter when you drop them.

I can think of another dozen or so but, frankly, Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Jon.

I get this vague impression you don't care for Steve very much.

lol ... you are comparing Musical Artists to Computer Designers?

give me a break ... Try comparing a Automobile Designer that leaves Ford and goes to work for Chevrolet ... happens every day.

These people are all replaceable with the next crop of Designers.

Hmmm, tough choice, you see, if Concorde was never grounded it would be ok.

But if your family want you to move back home, or you yourself want to, you should do that really and tell em you won't let the door hit you in the arse...

It's not like he can't get a job in the UK with his reputation, I don't think it's fair of Apple to force im to choose though, they could at least bother to try and see if it works rather then tell him you move your fired. Seeing as he has been directly responsible for the masses of cash they all personally have let alone the company. I think I would feel rather betrade if I was told that after doing what he has for Apple, so that would possibly make think well you can get ******** then!

Apple will be in trouble without Jon designing their products.

Seriously, this does not bode well.

No, he's replaceable. Jobs isn't. There really are other outstanding industrial designers in this world who would LOVE to take Ive's place. In fact, it may be due time for such a change.

A designer's place is all about the design, and about understanding the company making the product, the intent of the product, the products that have come before, the materials available, etc. Many people can do that, and do it well.

What Jobs does has no boundaries. It's visionary and gutsy, and few people are ever well-positioned to do it. (It sorta has to be 'your' company one way or another.)

Jobs can't be replaced. Tim Cook probably can't be replaced, either, because what he does is something of a 'black art' few people really understand (or do well). But Ive? Sure, you'd want to find the best person, but there'd be no shortage of highly qualified applicants.

Designed by Apple in Somerset. Assembled in China.

Ridiculous

As an Apple shareholder, this is ridiculous. The board should reconsider their position. Set up a full wall video conference system and be done with it. Ive being a few thousand miles away should not make a big difference.

Indeed, working remotely can be even more effective that working in the shackles of a corporate environment, and makes for a happier employee.

Mandate that he travel once month or quarter, whatever.
