I don't think it's going to be a seamless and fast rollout how Apple is expecting it to be. Just look at Apple Wallet. People still carry physical credit cards.
The article says, "unknown" at this time. What states allow the use of digital licenses?
Better to have your ID syncd with your Apple Watch. Let the watch do the ID transaction, so cops see both your hands at all times…It's funny because it's true.
Thanks to COVID-19 (!), most stores around me now accept Apple Pay. So I only need to carry driver's license and one physical credit card just in case. They need to edit the story. Until every state allows digital ID's to be used, this is a convenience for those that do. ApplePay didn't replace credit cards either.
I can't imagine a world where I get pulled over by a cop and then hand them my unlocked iPhone. Ditto for going through a TSA line. I sincerely hope they're thinking much beyond that type of interaction. Hopefully something NFC based.
Probably won’t be a feature in Florida until 2199, because… Florida
... except that there are a lot of requirements for ID other than driving. Banks, liquor stores, medical offices, medical marijuana, etc. all ask to see your ID too. So, until "Electronic ID" becomes the PRIMARY form of ID, this will be nothing more than a convenience. I'll cheerfully take it though. Thanks to COVID-19 (!), most stores around me now accept Apple Pay. So I only need to carry driver's license and one physical credit card just in case.
As for other states, I rarely travel into other states, so once my own state supports digital ID, I probably would leave the driver's license behind for all but travel.
Actually it’s not really funny because it’s categorically false. Compliant people rarely if ever get shot. It's funny because it's true.
If the picture and physical details are close enough, what’s to stop this from happening with an actual, physical ID?Law enforcement here. Great, but what's to stop someone from using a screen shot as their ID? You screen grab your buddies ID, it becomes your fake ID?
I am guessing there will be some kind of tamper proof mechanism in the ID.Law enforcement here. Great, but what's to stop someone from using a screen shot as their ID? You screen grab your buddies ID, it becomes your fake ID?
I don't believe the article is about handing over your phone or watch. An officer can take a picture of the ID to confirm at his or her vehicle. While I understand the desire to do this, for getting drinks or something. I will never ever give an unlocked phone to a officer. They want my license they will get the physical one. Giving your unlocked phone to a member of law enforcement opens up way to many issues in my mind.
Now if I can have my licenses and display the barcode that the officer can then scan, sure.
If it is as reliable as Apple Pay you'll still need to carry a wallet with your cards. I find at least 25% of the time Apple Pay doesn't work at places it is supposed to - then the next week it might at same place.
But since I have no intention of buying an Apple watch it won't really make a difference to me.
This is precisely my concern. Even if they're supposed to come to the window and scan the ID somehow via my phone, in a locked state, I sincerely doubt that cops will consistently follow that procedure.Um... while I admit it has been some time since I got pulled over, but I recall they always took my ID back to their car.
This idea that every cop will have some wireless tech that allows them to accept the info without taking your device is unrealistic.

We can't even get them to reliably turn on their body cams.
"Oh that machine is broken, I need to take it back to my car with me…"
Given that the article is about using the Apple Watch, and you can't take the Apple Watch off your wrist without it locking, they certainly appear to be going for the "hold your device/wrist up to this reader" approach. I've heard there are several states that already allow digital drivers licenses, and the reports from users there are that the cops are not allowed to ask for - and don't want to touch - your phone. And yeah, I wouldn't ever hand my phone over to the police to take back to their squad car - sounds like they've taken that into account.I can't imagine a world where I get pulled over by a cop and then hand them my unlocked iPhone.
And do what with it, precisely, that they couldn't do by reading the information off the screen while you hold it? I get the concern, but there's no plausible reason for them to have to take your phone back to their car. And until whatever new scanners they need get fully deployed, you'll need to carry your physical drivers license card as a backup anyway."Oh that machine is broken, I need to take it back to my car with me…"
Beyond that, it would need a sort of half-unlocked state, exposing only your license. You don't want anyone who picks up your phone to be able to access your drivers license. It's a must to be able to have it on the Lock Screen without unlocking your your phone.
