Just their typical lack of testing and not thinking about how everyone operates.

They pushed out this update because of an edge case where physical access was needed and assumed everyone already was using their AI tools so never tested if they weren't.
I wonder how many people are actually using Apple Intelligence on a daily or regular basis.

Probably very few people.

If it's like the windows users I know everyone just wants it to piss off and leave them alone and not change anything. They have zero investment in it or any technology. In fact the machine is just there to do a job and it's going to be done how it is always done, AI or not.

And no despite the optimistic crack inspired rambling of our technology leadership, it won't be done by an AI now or ever, because it's pretty difficult to even describe what someone does, let along replace even part of it.

iPhone 15 Pro Max here, previously I had Apple Intelligence disabled but when iOS 18.3 was installed it was silently re-enabled without warning. The initial boot-up after that update didn't display any kind of "welcome" or onboarding page and took me straight to the Home Screen without any indication that Apple Intelligence had been re-enabled.

To make matters worse, it's stuck in this perpetual "Downloading..." state and has been like this for the past two weeks. Despite my phone being connected to Wi-Fi and charging, it's not actually downloading anything (checked with a system monitor, there's little to no network activity).

There's also no longer a toggle button to disable Apple Intelligence and despite it being an incomplete download, it seems to be rampantly draining my battery (even though it's not supposed to do this while off-charge). Because of this, I can't manually disable the feature or force a redownload/reinstall. My device is stuck like this forever.

I've tried various combinations of reboots, changing region and language settings, and resetting network settings but none of it fixed the issue.

Yesterday's iOS 18.3.1 update also did absolutely nothing to address this.

On the other hand, neither iPadOS 18.3 nor 18.3.1 re-enabled Apple Intelligence on my M1 iPad. Apple's behaviour seems really inconsistent.
It was consistent on all my devices , re-enabling the AI junk.

I’ve now resorted to changing the iPhone language and Siri language to two different ones, which stops the AI junk for enabling itself.

Deliberate behaviour?
Tim also makes it hard to turn off, I tried using "search" in settings app for apple intelligence, so I could turn it off. Results of the search, nothing.

Makes you question their privacy marketing when they can't even respect the settings on a device you supposedly own....

Apple should have just grown a backbone and implemented AI features in a highly segmented, modular way and facilitated their complete removal. I think playing up Apple’s commitment to enhanced security and user choice elements for AI would actually be attractive to a lot of consumers. Most consumers out there don’t care enough to learn what “AI” can do for them, all they know is that the buzzword is everywhere. If given a clear choice to just avoid the unknowns altogether, I think they would take it.

Nailed it. It really is this simple.

Apple Intelligence doesn't seem useful at the moment. Object removal looks more like the very first context aware eraser tools from photoshop.

It's important to check all settings after upgrades, including iCloud choices sometimes mysteriously reactivated. Any with forever "rent" money involved (present or future) can end up being a very profitable "oops." 💰💰💰
Mad as it sounds I always check the listening history tab is off in Apple Music each time I launch it. That sort of sums up where we are with the quality of Apple Software now. Trust nothing, check everything.. and then check it again.

I just updated iOS this morning on my iPhone 13 Mini. The best thing about my phone beside its size is that it is that "Apple Intelligence" is not able to be run. Thus, I don't have to turn off that crap every time I update iOS.

Unfortunately, my iPad Air 5 can run "Apple Intelligence". As I updated iPadOS this morning, it turned Apple Intelligence back on, after I had disabled it the last time!!! So I had to go back and turn it off.

Please Apple, quit trying to ram it down my throat. I don't want it as it exists now. There is nothing that I need from it. So I have to keep disabling it. The one good thing about it, so far, is that current and future devices will have better processors and storage to accommodate it, which reaps benefits for most of us doing other things.

Sorry about my rant, but I am just sick of all the hype on "AI". It may be useful one day, but it is not there yet.

Could be incompetence.

It’s only a bug caused by incompetence and random chance.

Same reason why Finder prefs don’t always stick or why the Notes app on macOS has had broken syncing forever.

The Apple Intelligence model that is downloaded does nothing if it isn’t called from the Writing Tools menu or icon. It’s just a text generator that receives an input and gives an output.

It’s not an actual “AI” being that watches you. If companies wanted to do that they would just install a basic keylogger.

Agree completely. I've had Home re-enabled many times in iCloud after an update so now I check all settings whenever Apple releases something new

Soon the headlines from Apple:

“Apple Intelligence a smash hit!”
“Enabled on XYZ % of Apple devices!”

They will probably sub in "used by" for "enabled on" to be able to include all the people who ever tried it once and/or had it automatically turned on by an update even if they promptly turned it back off. "Enabled by" implies it's in use at the time of the claim unless it is reinterpreted to mean that if it was ever enabled- even if for only a minute after an update- it gets counted in the tally.

It is difficult to put into polite words what an utter disaster this excruciating release of Apple AI is. Does anybody really know what is supposed to work on which device in which country, and when? Does anybody even care by now? The big news of AI for iPhone 16 and iOS 18 has become a humiliating failure. Soon they will be marketing the next iPhone and still Apple AI will be a disaster. I have little to no interest in it anyway. I have an 15 ProMax and a UK Apple Account but live in another country and I don't actually know if any aspects of Apple AI are active (or could be active) on my phone or not. I have made no effort even to go to my iPhone (or Mac) settings and make any attempt to find out. I read these particular articles out of a morbid curiosity to see how long Apple can get away with it and what PR stunt they spin next.

Dear Apple,

F.U. for selling "Apple Intelligence" devices in EU and disabling the feature.

It's not like i can't live without it, but this is a scam.

AI defaulted to “on” on all of my updated devices: iPhone, iPads, Mac Studio. I turned AI off again manually. Honestly, as much as it annoys me I kind of expected this.

Updated this morning and it was re-enabled on my iPad Air. Haven't updated my MBA M2 yet but assume it will be the same.
