I would love it if MagSafe could also transfer data, primarily so when I hop in my car I just attach my phone to a MagSafe mount, and viola!, I'm connected and charging. But I think regardless of whether they make the switch to USB-C or not, removing the cable port would be a mistake. Why would consumers prefer fewer features?

Apple will either wait until USB-C is no longer the universal standard port then adopt it, or they will invent their own, inferior port Lightning 2, or they will switch to the inferior wireless and/or magsux only. I like Apple's devices and their walled gardens, but I’m getting really angry about the constant rear-ending we take due to their extreme greed and arrogance.

the adoption of USB-C would negatively impact its Made for ‌iPhone‌ (MFi) program
Pardon my ignorance, but how will it be negative? Is it some technical issues where Lightning performs better than USB-C in certain areas, or is this just a nice way of saying that Apple will make less licensing money?

I can see if Apple ditching all ports & just going straight MagSafe/Qi-charging could give at least some boost to improving the wireless charging standard. A little like how the original iMac helped the computer industry move away from floppy drives.

However, I would like to see USB-C, maybe even Thunderbolt replace Lightning. Faster data transfer, more compatible with non-Apple accessories, although people will still need to buy lightning > USB-C adaptors if not entirely replace their existing lightning accessories.

I get this impression Apple will go with their own MagSafe variant for the iPhone, probably one that is also capable of data transfer. I understand why people want "a single cable to charge everything", but since the Watch already has its own cable, I really don't see an issue with carrying a third option when traveling. It's not really that big a deal.

No skin off my nose, as I am happy with my current range of devices (and specifically, the Lightning Docks I have all over the house to dock my phone).
This is the most apple comment I’ve seen in a while:

Since the watch has a proprietary plug, why not have more devices that have a proprietary plug?

I just hope they switch to USB-C.. they can't get rid of the port completely, too many devices rely upon some kind of physical port, namely millions of cars that have Apple CarPlay. They would piss off a lot of people if they killed it off completely unless they can magically turn all those cars into wireless CarPlay.

CarPlay is the reason I hope they stick to cable, Lightning or USB-C, either works. Or come with an official, reliable adapter.

Ok so you don't know what magsafe is.
I know what MagSafe is and I use it for both my AirPods and Apple Watch but I just don’t want to be holding my iPhone up for an hour or 2 while a cumbersome disk is attached to the back of the phone. That’s just my take. From the reactions that I’m getting from others, it is apparent that many have altering preferences to mine and that completely ok

I agree with you on Type C but you can "magically" turn any car that has CarPlay into Wireless CarPlay with a dongle.

Why let a corporation, of all things, hold you in such a state of anger?

Most people are born with free will. Why not exercise that and find a tech manufacturer that wouldn't have a grip on your happiness?

The only thing I use to plug in my phone the last few years has been CarPlay. Besides that it's all wireless. Who plugs in their iphone regularly still? And for those that do, don't you have a ton of these lightning cords already. Why would they want USB C for this?

Exactly...I have been concerned about CarPlay since Apple has floated the idea of getting rid of the port. Apple would either have to come up with a wireless CarPlay adaptor (these are out there but haven't been proven to be too reliable and have delay in operation) or end up upsetting millions of people that use CarPlay every day.

Well, in 1999, when Jobs first announced OS X, he said it was the os for the next 15 years. Other than for a recent name change about 19 years later, it‘s still the same OS.

so don’t go by someone at Apple, no matter who it is, using a number like 15 years, or 10 tears as anything other than a statement that ”this is important enough to us that we’re going to keep it around for some time.” In other words, the number isn’t a delimiter, it’s just an expression of confidence that the new technology is robust enough to be around for a fairly long time, whatever that time might turn out to be.

Isn't there a certain level of hypocrisy re: wireless charging (of any kind, not just MagSafe).
  • It's far less efficient than wired charging.
  • Creates more heat, especially at higher charging speeds, and that has a negative impact on battery longevity.
  • Faster battery degradation = bigger negative impact on the planet as we'll need to mine more materials to manufacture replacements or dispose of spent batteries safely.
  • You still have to plug in the "wireless" charger so, on some level, there is still a wire.
For a company that touts its environmental record at every turn (and often does so arrogantly) wouldn't it behoove them to only ship charging solutions that promote charging efficiency and minimal planetary impact?

Perhaps Mr. Schiller can't make a "courage" related connection to shareholder return on this front. Then again, ever since that 2016 keynote he's come off as a jacka$$.

The problem becomes real estate and availability. for those that love to plug in, they want a certain guarantee that it will stay connected and charging. Then there is the wireless group...

I charge while I drive...for the most part. Carplay will not connect wirelessly (without the ability to charge)...that I am aware of. Plus, not all vehicles have the wireless charging built in to the vehicle. And with apple reducing what is included with the phone...we may be getting a phone that could be called "Ikea".

You can buy a device that will make your CarPlay wireless, so there is no reason Apple couldn't create one.

And listen to the non-stop complaints of "Every other phone manufacturer has wireless charging. Why doesn't Apple?"

People forget that the port is used for more than just charging. Data transfer, backups, and connecting accessories like FLIR cameras, microphones, video & audio adapters, etc...

Just switch to damn USB-C and comply with the rest of the industry. I'll be happy to replace a dozen lightning cables I have all over the place just to be done with this argument.
